bonvoyagebites Posted August 19, 2015 #3 Share Posted August 19, 2015 If that is how you enjoy spending your time, then go for it. Vacation is all about enjoying yourself. I was on a recent Holland America cruise and there was a man every day sitting by a window looking out at the sea, and knitting hats or similar. It looked like he was really enjoying himself. Have a great trip!
spookwife Posted August 19, 2015 #4 Share Posted August 19, 2015 I have seen knitting crocheting, needlework, quilting and a group of 4 ladies making those no sew fleece blankets

denatravels Posted August 19, 2015 #6 Share Posted August 19, 2015 I think it would look odd if you pulled out a sewing machine on a cruise; but crochet-- absolutely not! I take the subway to work in NYC and lots of people do that on the commute. Seems totally normal (and less expensive than going to the casino!!). Enjoy!! denatravels Posted August 19, 2015 #9 Share Posted August 19, 2015 If you are flying, you probably should check them in luggage. May not be able to get through security.
kaseyoz Posted August 19, 2015 #10 Share Posted August 19, 2015 I did a short leg of a world cruise on QM. 2 and they actually had knitting and needlepoint get togethers. There were just as many men as women working on needlepoint./ cross stitch.

casinostreer Posted August 19, 2015 #12 Share Posted August 19, 2015 I would think it's TOTALLY cool if I saw that. Don't be afraid to do what pleases you because of what others might think. Just don't stab anyone.
Daghis Posted August 19, 2015 #13 Share Posted August 19, 2015 If you are flying, you probably should check them in luggage. May not be able to get through security. TSA rules permit knitting needles and crochet hooks. I've brought my knitting with me in my carry-on without any problems. And to the OP, crochet away! One of my favorite activities onboard is sitting in the Viking Crown Lounge, with a tasty beverage, knitting away while watching the pretty scenery. Rare Scrapnana Posted August 20, 2015 #14 Share Posted August 20, 2015 I always take my knitting with me when I cruise. It's a great conversation starter. People walking by will stop and watch and ask what you are working on.

TSA allows but many other countries do not allow knitting needles, crochet hooks, etc. check first if you're flying internationally. On a TA cruise met with a group of knitters/crochet/needlework fans each morning. Someone posted on the board by guest relations and we met daily. It was very nice ......very informal ......just met "in the morning " and people came for a half hour or 2-3 hours. Exchanged a lot of skills, patterns, etc.
TheGinBoy Posted August 20, 2015 #16 Share Posted August 20, 2015 Seen plenty of people doing crochet and needle point in the library and quieter parts of the ships. Might look a bit odd if you tried to get a loom onboard though...
shippmates Posted August 20, 2015 #17 Share Posted August 20, 2015 You will have many other guests who crochet or knit. I would take my cross stitch with me and my husband would take is paint by numbers. We had many wonderful conversations with people who stop to see what you are doing. You sure can get alot of crafting done on the sea days. Have fun and enjoy your cruise.

Funny you should say that: one cruise had a small group of quilters on board. they had a room set aside for their exclusive use the entire time.. and more than one brought portable sewing machines.and set them up. sbbquilter Posted August 20, 2015 #20 Share Posted August 20, 2015 Part of my planning is selecting a new knitting project for the cruise - just finished these Caribbean socks. Wearing them will bring back memories of the fun we had in the southern Caribbean.
Daghis Posted August 20, 2015 #21 Share Posted August 20, 2015 (edited) TSA allows but many other countries do not allow knitting needles, crochet hooks, etc. check first if you're flying internationally. Good catch. I didn't see that the OP is from Ireland. Yup, that means a whole different set of rules to have to contend with. CruiseDucks Posted August 20, 2015 #23 Share Posted August 20, 2015 For anyone here who's on Ravelry, you may be interested to know there's a Cruising Knitters group. It's relatively quiet, but you do get people posting which sailings they'll be on and looking for people to meet up with and I've also found it useful for information on where to find yarn stores in various ports :D

Rare steamboats Posted August 20, 2015 #25 Share Posted August 20, 2015 Go ahead!! On our Oasis TA last year I organized a group (plus I put a note on the bulletin board). I´m into cross stitching. But we had knitters, crocheters and one lady even brought her collapsible spinning wheel! We met each afternoon for an hour or so. There was a second group knitting. Ask on your roll call! steamboats
