Update.

Freedom sand Enchantment should be getting VOOM internet added by May 1, 2016 at the latest as they have been included in Royals latest promo that offers free VOOM internet on select ships.

Thanks Matt for the above information.

Thanks Ken. I saw that promo and wondered how they were going to pull it off but I guess they don't need a dry dock to do it. We're on Freedom May 8th.

Maybe right now it's about location on the ship. Although we could not Facetime, the speed wasn't horrendous and we were also on Deck 10 back in 2014.

We were in an Aft JS 7712, not very good on balcony, but fine in cabin. I just used it to post a live review. No video streaming. Maybe that's the complaint.

We were on FOS in July, Deck 10 and the internet was awful, we could barely get on our email. We were told one of the reasons besides being outdated wiring, is that when there are a lot of kids on board that have iphones, they stay connected the entire cruise which takes away bandwidth.

  • 2 months later...
I was on the Freedom last month and the Hotel Director indicated they were hopeful the Internet upgrade should be completed by sometime in February.

Yes!

Any update on this? It's be great if it was available for my upcoming.

I'll start asking next month if anyone off the FOS had Voom.

What is the price of internet for a 7 day cruise? Do you think the price will go up if FOS has high speed internet?

$20 per day for one device, $30 per day for two devices.

Ships with Voom have been less expensive.

Honestly, I didn't find it that bad last March. It was adequate enough to monitor my dogs via webcam and change train tickets to plane tickets the day before we left.

Thanks. In March 2014 it was pretty slow.

We just got off Freedom on Sunday. We had been on for 3 weeks. We found the Internet much better than we had in the past. We were surprised. Sometimes It would kick me off but always able to get back on. Email was fine. We were pleased with the speed. We were on deck 10 aft.

I'm interested in this too. We will be on FOS in July and really need better internet than FOS last year!

We were recently on Freedom for two weeks. Deck 6 midship for the first week and Deck 10 midship the second week.

Connectivity from Deck 6 was horrendous. Had to walk down to the casino or Promenade to realize optimal connectivity. Connectivity from our cabin on Deck 10 was superb.

I suspect this upgrade doesn't fix where you can and can't get a connection, but once you are on it will be faster. Is there any technical information on what they actually change to move a ship to Voom?

As a network/computer guy, the description sounds to me like all they are doing is changing the "back end". That is, they are connecting the existing infrastructure to a faster internet connection.

If they were replacing the access points throughout the ship, it probably wouldn't be happening so fast as it means additional crew on board looking after the installs.
