Translated (may be a bit rough) article from Il Piccolo:

07 Jan 2017

MONFALCONE. "Engines all ahead." Not a cliché that delivered yesterday by the Trieste Dino Sagani aboard the Majestic Princess. It is the commander of the flagship of Princess Cruises, built in the yards of Panzano, which before the official handover scheduled March 31 in Monfalcone faces a slew of sea trials. A "running-in" observed on the ground by hundreds of people who have seen parading the giant front of Monfalcone, Trieste, with the background the snow-capped mountains just before "disappearing" in the direction of Ancona. A hit and run just to tempt lovers of white ships.

Go near San Benedetto del Tronto, there are the just backdrops to try our anchors ... »says Sagani. In his family of Lošinj Doc's grandfather and great-grandfather Giuseppe Clemente they have sailed the seas and he could only follow a path already marked. The one of the brave captains of Lošinj to Agostino "Tino" Straulino, legendary Olympic sailor and Admiral started. Sagani follows him, at least in the path of catfish, since 16 years he sailed as a deckhand durations summer vacations from school (the Boat of Trieste, of course) to become, today, one of the first commanders under the shipowner English P & O Cruises Pricess.

It is not alone in the passenger ship: within a thousand laborers and skilled technicians, the workers provided by Fincantieri, committed to finish the work in time. Only that the shipowner did even climb his men aboard the Majestic for the Asian market. No coincidence Sagani short fly to China, to study the ports and their pitfalls, after testing the specific simulator to Amsterdam with the team of officers. An "electronic game" not easy to move properly and pull the giant, perhaps on a pier not just along as we should (the Bersaglieri Pier Trieste, for example).

But before the canonical trials and ritual. "That's the time to try them all, from beginning to end, to see if everything is working: the machine is in the test and speed, the steering ...," says the commander. "After these days in the Gulf of Trieste, we are returning to Ancona - explains Sagani - to haul down four points again, more than one hundred meters deep, and on the way before arriving at the right bottom we will do the maximum speed tests."

Engine speed ahead, in short, is not an invention of film. And there is also the "crash stop" to try. "The maximum speed all the way back - reveals Sagani - you just in this construction phase." And hopefully not have to do more.

Follow the equipment testing water bridge, the safety and the rudder around the bar at the maximum speed of the ship. All things to do in the Adriatic, offshore, not in a "bowl" as the Gulf of Trieste that passenger vessels built. It is good. Enough to take on two more yesterday of Fincantieri specialized technicians.

He will fly to Amsterdam and then to Beijing commander Sagani before picking up the Majestic that on the evening of March 31 could get to Trieste. "I'm counting to take the Maritime Station immediately after the exit from Fincantieri, or the next morning," he says counting the days. For him it will be a maiden voyage, which will start on April 4 from Ravenna, different flavor because of that beginning from Monfalcone and Trieste. In his city, he moored for a day. At the helm of a ship dream, which will plow the coasts of China, Japan and Korea, where the crew of the company should embark already in mid-March. But there is still time: first you have to finish the tests, correct imperfections and enjoy the party.

May be a mix up in the translation where it says the ship sails from Ravenna on the 4th of April.

Not sure why, but the new article in Il Piccolo today (translated below) stated the same thing...

MAJESTIC PRINCESS PASSES SEA TRIALS

"With thousands aboard the Majestic Princess successfully conclude sea trials. It returned yesterday morning at 7.30 to the construction site of Panzano the twin of the Royal and Regal, the largest ever built in Italy by Fincantieri cruise ship. And from what has been learned from the yard's new flagship that is being completed in Panzano ordered by Carnival Group for the shipping company Princess Cruises, completed with great satisfaction all the facts in the navigation test. Seven days of very tough tests as required by the security protocol for these increasingly large ships, but increasingly sophisticated at the time and equipped with technologies that make them more secure and comfortable.

And as also confirmed Fincantieri sea trials went "very well and from a technical point of view are all contractually agreed tests were carried out for acceptance." It was thus verified the chart speed, fuel consumption, with results matching forecasts. Among the main evidence of the ''Endurance", ie the resistance in the various maneuvers including the crash stop or maneuver forced shutdown. This, according to the manual, is performed, or putting a sudden the engines full astern (full speed) while the vessel is at cruising speed, or turn the azipod if there are (the propulsion system and a fixed pitch propeller variable rpm) to check the reaction of the hull and vibration in addition to the stopping distance. All situations and conditions "extreme" that it is hoped that the ship should never undergo a cruise but who must be able to withstand. And the Majestic was able to withstand very well these situations of "extreme conditions" during the challenging days of testing commenced on 4 January. On board, as mentioned at the beginning, at least a thousand people, including technical staff of Fincantieri, the shipping company and the ranking registry.

The new cruise ships, which has been designed for the Chinese market, commanded by Trieste Dino Sagani, went so far as San Benedetto del Tronto with various speed tests and depth of its waters off the coast of San Benedetto del Tronto has also tried the anchors. It is a true giant, the Majestic is in fact a 145 thousand ton ship that can accommodate up to 4 thousand 250 passengers and over 1,500 crew members. A giant white and blue that was launched almost a year ago, on February 8, 2016, a date auspicious according to Chinese tradition. A date chosen precisely because on 8 February coincided with the Beijing New Year (last year was the year of the monkey). It was also the auspicious day of rain swing of the launch day. Majestic Princess is a ship designed for the Chinese up in the soul and in the choice of entertainment: the hull the name "Sheng Shì Gng Zh Hao", which was chosen by the employees of "Carnival plc's China," has the meaning of "Grand World "or" Grand Spirit ". Before doing is based in Shanghai, the ship passengers spend still nearly two months in the Mediterranean. The inaugural cruise, five-day, set sail on April 4. From the reference port of Shanghai, Majestic Princess then lead guests in cruises with Japan and Korea destination, confirming the high quality of the solutions that have made big sisters "Royal Princess" and "Regal Princess," also built in Monfalcone.

The crew of the shipping company should complete the shipment in mid-March while the same Sagani commander, who will fly to Amsterdam and then to Beijing, will take over the Majestic that on the evening of March 31 could get to Trieste where it will remain moored at the Maritime Station for a whole day. The maiden voyage will depart from Ravenna."

So, now we're about 80 days from delivery?

I'm not sure if these type of images have been posted before, but it's the first time I've seen an aerial view of those extended balcony decks on the aft sides of Majestic Princess (the images are obviously from a few months ago and well before sea trials)...

We are booked on the preview cruise on 31st March. Hoping it does go from Trieste - but at least we are flying into Venice so can switch if they change plans.

The first report says the 4th April cruise departs Ravenna! which is somewhat odd, the 31st trial cruise as Princess have called it in an e mail reply I received from them looks like it will leave from Trieste.

Not sure where I'll Piccolo are getting their info from re Ravenna.
