IRL_Joanie Posted January 15, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 15, 2016 Oh Oh....... For those of us who might discover we've forgotten to pack something we cannot do without while on an Alaska Cruise and think they'll pick it up at the Walmart Super Center in Juneau (since its cheaper there than a regular store in Alaska) ....THINK AGAIN!!! Announced today is a complete list of all 269 Walmart and affiliated stores being closed and Juneau is on the list. It will close its doors on 5 February 2016. I am posting this here only because I know of quite a few members of Cruise Critic who have made use of this store specifically. Joanie
SilvertoGold Posted January 15, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 15, 2016 Thanks, Joanie. The crew will be affected hugely by this. Their port for shopping and that is where they used to go!
Donny-Joe Posted January 15, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 15, 2016 Looks like there's a Fred Meyer in Juneau still, which should be just as good for food, and pretty close for everything else. It's further from the port, though.

frankc98376 Posted January 15, 2016 #7 Share Posted January 15, 2016 We've used the shuttle to that store as well as the one in Ketchikan. A lot of crew utilize the Costco shuttle in Juneau

sail7seas Posted January 15, 2016 #9 Share Posted January 15, 2016 I'm sorry the crew will not have that store as I know many depend upon replenishing their supplies there as they do in many ports.
Krazy Kruizers Posted January 15, 2016 #10 Share Posted January 15, 2016 It has been all over our news. I haven't had a chance to check the list yet. Feel sorry for the crew as they don't have a lot of places to buy their supplies.
Rare melodyesch Posted January 15, 2016 #11 Share Posted January 15, 2016 We've been to the Fred Meyer in Juneau and it would be a suitable alternative. Hopefully they can arrange some type of transportation there as it is farther from the port. Was there a shuttle to the Walmart? I can't picture where it is/was. I feel bad for the employees, there's not a lot of options in Juneau. But to be honest, I've never been to that Walmart so I personally won't miss it. thinfool Posted January 15, 2016 #13 Share Posted January 15, 2016 Very interesting...we were in Juneau in August 07. Walmart was finished but not yet open. It opened 2 weeks after we were there. I guess it survived about 9 years. We were told that all the inventory had to be brought by barge from Anchorage.

Tampa Girl Posted January 16, 2016 #15 Share Posted January 16, 2016 Joanie, which list shows the Juneau store? I have looked at four "full lists" and cannot find Alaska listed.

But to be honest, I've never been to that Walmart so I personally won't miss it. Both Walmart and Costco have shuttles. They are primarily for crew but really dont appear to care if passengers jump on. One driver said he liked it as passengers tip well :). We always make sure crew gets on first and only board if there is space as crew time ashore is very limited. I'm confident Fred Meyer will have a shuttle (if they dont already)

It's further from the port, though. I never found Fred Meyer well priced in Bellingham, Wa. Walmart's pricing is far superior and cheaper. I feel bad for the crew. Mind you the crew can do well in Vancouver, BC now due to the low Canadian dollar.
