Possibility of Joy inaugural short in EU?

That article is really a little odd... and its source are several crew members onboard the Norwegian Escape :rolleyes::eek:!!

 

Sorry, I doubt that Meyer will ever hand over a half finished ship. Carpets, beddings and stuff are nothing which couldn´t be done in Papenburg either. And it has nothing to do with China being cheaper as all the supplies mainly come from European companies anyway. And then the ship going to Miami???:confused:

 

What might be realistic is that they don´t finish the ship in the shipyard but interior work will be done on the way to China. But that will be done by workers contracted by Meyer. This is not such an uncommon thing. Happened with the AIDAprima recently (although this was planned totally different - but that´s another story).

 

And those finishing touches won´t take from March til summer...

Is anyone else slightly miffed at NCL's rather discriminative stance on not allowing European or American customers book cruises on the Joy? Surely it is up to the individual to decide if they wish to sail on her? Do travel agents not allow you to book land tours of China in case you are offended by other cultures? No as that would be seen as pathetic. Are Chinese tourists allowed to book other NCL ships even though they could see us Brits or yanks as culturally inappropriate? Yes they can.

 

I've worked and travelled around China and accept the cultural differences and would love to sail on the joy with my family. I'm finding it offensive that I'm not allowed to do so yet it's ok for me to book the breakaway which is full of New Yorkers ;-)

Who said anything about not being allowed to book the Joy? :confused: You can contact a Chinese TA, or try to find a TA in your area that is willing to help you with this booking.

 

As you pointed out, Chinese passengers manage to book NCL cruises, even though the Chinese website is not yet operational (and didn't even exist until a few months ago). How do you think they do it? If they can somehow find a way to purchase a product that isn't marketed to them, so can you.

When speaking to NCL they have clearly stated (in the UK at least) that this ship is built for the chinese market, you as a european will not be able to handle the cultural differences and therefore bookings will not be taken. Yes I'm sure I could search out a travel agent in Hong Kong or Shanghai who may be able to assist but why should I? This is an NCL ship (not a subsidary with differnet name/flag/management) and therefore I do not see why it should be out of bounds. My understsanding is that the vessel will be Bahamas flagged, international crew and under ISM management from the main NCL offices therefore the working language of the vessel will remain English (with chinese translations) so I can not see any technical issues with treating this vessel the same as others? Out of interest do RCCL and others isolate the chinese based vessels (they appear on the UK website as bookable)?

 

I would say NCL are underestimating the potential revenue this ship could generate with none chinese passangers.

I have no personal experience with whether or not NCL will take reservations from non-Chinese for this ship, but I would correct the above statement. None of the conditions you state: "Bahamas flag", "International crew", or "ISM management from the main NCL office" equates to the working language of the ship being English. It is up to the company to decide what the working language for any given ship is to be, and incorporate that information into their ISM code. There is nothing to prevent NCL from declaring the working language of the Joy as Mandarin, Cantonese, or Thai. They do, however, have to ensure that all crew are competent in that language.

mmmm not sure you're correct on this. As a serving Master I've been involved in a lot of working langugue discusions on vessels operating in contenental shelfs where English is not the 1st langauge. Brazil for expample has regualtions which stipulate the requirement to operate in Portgugese but this requirement is bolted on to the ships working language as dictated within the SMS.

 

According to Bahamas flag requirements the working laguage of the Flag is English and therefore all official documentation (including safety plans/signage) is to be in English. As per SOLAS V/14 the working laguage onboard is to be stipulated in the offical log book but the shipping notice clearly states that if any other language is used then ALL crew are to be conversant in the chosen laguage and able to recieve as well as give instructions accordingly. As I'm aware of nemourous hotel, technical and marine personnel already discussing transfers to the Joy then this requirement cant possibly be met.

I'm from Singapore, where the Norwegian Joy will come, on-route to China. And I've been waiting for them to release their itinerary. Even asked them on facebook, but they said they still haven't released it yet.

 

I'm wondering whether Norwegian will ever released their itinerary for the re-positioning cruise or even sailings after that. I will be surprised if they don't.

 

It's becoming like the Genting Dream, its re-positioning cruises are only marketed via travel agents only

 

For those thinking its a straight shot to China for extra work in a shipyard, Kai Tak cruise terminal in HK shows her arriving on the 12 June and its a turnaround, so formally she will start her china deployment there.

I must join in by saying how disappointing it is. I was booked onto the Escape but changed it to another cruise line and sailing as I thought I would just wait for the Joy. Will never make that mistake again!!

 

However, to keep my spirits up, I have booked the maiden sailing on Majestic Princess in April 2017. This too is sailing to China but at least they are doing some short Med cruises beforehand. It will be tailored to the Chinese market but obviously Princess believe that Europeans can spend just as much as the Chinese albeit in the bars rather than shopping or casinos!! I am also booked onto the MSC Meraviglia.

 

Anyone know when the new NCL Bliss will be arriving?

It's a shame NCL don't have faith in our beer drinking abilities!!

 

Speaking to NCL UK yesterday, they still believe there will be some sort of inaugural cruise once the joy is delivered. Given the lack of information on potential dates (and more info on the Chinese itinerary start dates) I get the feeling the vessel maybe behind schedule hence the lack of details.

 

The Bliss is due to start her Alaskan cruises during the summer of 2018 so I'd imagine delivery a couple of months before that to allow for the transatlantic and Panama Canal voyage with a couple of Escape style mini cruises inbetween.

As the title says!

 

I had the luxury last year of going on the Escape from Hamburg for three nights of the inaugural voyage. The roll call was explosive with great information and really awesome people, I didn't manage to meet enough of you.

 

What do you lot think the chances are to do that for the Joy? I know it will go to China. But it's in Meyer werft and has to go there.

 

I've been looking and waiting for more information but it's due out next March with very little into so far it seems. Have I missed something??

The 2- and 3-day-cruises from Hamburg to Southampton with the Escape before she crossed the Atlantic Ocean last year, were open for booking through NCL Europe several weeks before it was available to book through NCL in the US.

 

Maybe they will only have "test-cruises" in Europe with invited guests this time....??? Especially since she will be sailing out of Miami for quite some time before heading to China?

Basically it will be entirely run in Chinese so they will probably do the initial short cruises and the run to China probably via the Suez for Chinese guests with their Chinese staff. Shanghai Tianjin based cruises are mostly Chinese guests but sounds like these will be completely off the NCL website and maybe only bookable for expats in China.

 

Probably makes sense as most would be shocked to book on NCL and end up on ship catered to to and filled with Chinese guests.

There´s no inaugural voyage for the Norwegian Joy.

 

The delivery ceremony is held on April 27th in Bremerhaven. The ship is going from Eemshaven to Bremerhaven for this.

If you look at port of Southampton Schedules the Joy is not going there at all. Seems funny given the uK office is there but NCL must know that the is no point showcasing a ship that is not for EU/US markets at all.

While the Joy would fit the new locks, with the Bridge of the Americas being 28' lower than the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, I don't think she would fit under the Bridge of the Americas, so until that bridge is replaced, she won't use the Canal. Air drafts (height of ship above water) are notoriously hard to document, but I know the Breakaway class are close to the limit for NYC.

 

I would think the Joy would be able to transit the Panama Canal. The Bliss is doing Canal cruises, and she is an exact copy of the Joy. Remember that the Joy was originally the Bliss.
