dallascruiser Posted May 20, 2016 #1 Share Posted May 20, 2016 I am considering booking the Maasdam for Feb 2018 which is a r/t San Diego cruise going to South America (28 days). My question is since this could be the final sailing of the Maasdam as some have mentioned here on CC will the ship be in complete disrepair and everything be below normal standards for Holland America. I have read reviews from other cruise lines in the past if it was the final sailing of a ship the cruise could be horrible and since this is a long cruise I don't want to be stuck in the middle of a nightmare cruise. Thanks Linda S
Rare StartrainDD Posted May 20, 2016 #2 Share Posted May 20, 2016 Linda, we certainly hope this is not the last cruise for Maasdam. May I suggest revisiting the reviews of Statendam's last cruise? Seems to me they were quite positive. We sailed Statendam on her third to final cruise and thought the ship was in excellent shape and service was up to HAL's standards. All the best! Arie From everything I have read the final sailing of Maasdam will be early in 2018, and the sailing I am looking at is the final one available on HAL's site. Although other ships are showing out to April. I love this cruise because it doesn't involve a international flight, which we dislike so much. I think it would be very restful since we have been to most of the ports on previous cruises. Thanks Linda
Rare Btimmer Posted May 20, 2016 #4 Share Posted May 20, 2016 We'll be on the Naasdam for 52 days in the fall and I'll certainly let you know how it appears. We were on the final voyage of the Statendam and had no complaints about its upkeep.
Jemima Posted May 20, 2016 #5 Share Posted May 20, 2016 (edited) San Diego would be an extremely unlikely port for the end of the "last cruise". So would any other US port. Edited May 20, 2016 by Jemima typo

Stakeout Posted May 22, 2016 #8 Share Posted May 22, 2016 (edited) the HAL site is showing another cruise after the one you mentioned for the Maasdam as a 28 Day Hawaii-Tahiti on March 28 thru April 22 2018 .....that's just about the end of HAL's future cruise postings except for 3 ships in April Edited May 22, 2016 by Stakeout
Rare Copper10-8 Posted May 22, 2016 #9 Share Posted May 22, 2016 Maasie's "final cruise" for HAL will, when that comes and similar to her former sisters SADM and RYDM, be enroute to a dry-dock port (or one in decent proximity to a dry-dock) at her future owner's choosing. A lot of that will have to do who her future owner will be. As we know, SADM and RYDM went to the Sembawang Shipyard in Singapore prior to going into service for P&O Australia

igraf Posted May 24, 2016 #15 Share Posted May 24, 2016 San Diego actually has quite a bit of activity with regard to commercial shipbuilding: http://www.nassco.com/ Not so much with cruise ships, but I wouldn't go so far as to say "extremely unlikely". It could happen. igraf San Diego would be an extremely unlikely port for the end of the "last cruise". So would any other US port.

sppunk Posted May 24, 2016 #17 Share Posted May 24, 2016 It should be in mid 2018, barring any delays. After Hawaii it'll sail fr to an Asian shipyard most likely. DeeniEncinitas Posted December 4, 2016 #19 Share Posted December 4, 2016 This was my reply: Dear Denise, Thank you for your recent correspondence with Holland America Line regarding your upcoming ms Maasdam February 25th, 2018 voyage. Unfortunately, we are unable to speculate as to the possibility of any upcoming ship transitions/sales. Should the ms Maasdam indeed be transferred to P&O, we would most likely be replacing it rather than cancelling the voyage. Please keep an eye on our website and feel free to check back with us closer to the date of your future voyage. Thank you for contacting Holland America Line. Please feel free to contact us if we may be of additional assistance or visit us online. We look forward to welcoming you onboard in the near future! Thanks Linda S I was on the Maasdam 52 day cruise to Australia this fall. At the Mariner's lunch the Captain said not to believe everything that you hear about the ship being sold. He implied that there was no sale pending at the moment. The Maasdam has a very loyal following. The ship was in good condition, though there were a few leaks that were dealt with quickly. I was on the Ryndam a couple of months before her sale and she was in good shape. Edited December 4, 2016 by Ottawa traveller
boze9999 Posted December 5, 2016 #21 Share Posted December 5, 2016 Oosterdam had an emergency Azipod repair there once We were on that sailing Copper! It actually turned into an interesting cruise! We crawled along the Mexico coast back to San Diego and got to overnight on our last night in San Diego. Everyone had the choice to stay on board and visit San Diego as a "port", getting on and off (off boarding the next morning) or get off and head home if that be their choice. Loved "porting" in San Diego and would always recommend it as a great overnight port option for HAL on their longer cruises.
joekerstef Posted December 6, 2016 #22 Share Posted December 6, 2016 The Plan A Cruise section of HAL website now includes dates well into 2018. The last sailing listed for Maasdam is in April 2018 from San Diego to Boston. I am currently booked on the 22 April 2018 San Diego--->Boston Panama Canal Cruise. As far as I know, that's Maasdam's last listed cruise *currently* but there isn't too much else posted into May 2018 yet either. I was on Maasdam earlier this year, and as someone else on this thread mentioned, Capt. Smit said at the Mariner Luncheon not to believe the rumors about Maadam's relegation to the dustbin or whatever. He said she has *at least* two more years left with HAL. And even if our cruise ends up being her last or near last with HAL, I highly doubt they'll let her waste away. Doesn't benefit HAL in any way to do so. And again, as others have mentioned, people who sailed on both Ryndam and Statendam before they went to P&O thought those ships were in good condition at the end. I'm just not gonna worry about it. :)

navybankerteacher Posted December 6, 2016 #24 Share Posted December 6, 2016 San Diego would be an extremely unlikely port for the end of the "last cruise". So would any other US port. For any particular reason? Because she is most likely being sold rather than being scrapped, HAL would have ample incentive to keep up maintenance. Crew morale might be a factor, however.
