Rare babs135 Posted July 27, 2016 #1 Share Posted July 27, 2016 Reading about pickpockets, etc and buying bags/pouches that can be worn under clothing, what about cameras? We will be visiting Nassau and comments posted about problems there have made DH think he won't take his camera which would be a shame if we were unable to chronicle our visit. This obviously applies to other ports. He usually carries a 'man-bag' with the camera in it.

Bonnie J. Posted July 27, 2016 #4 Share Posted July 27, 2016 My digital is in my pocket but we often take a throw away camera- underwater if going to the beach. Just can't zoom but pictures are OK. Who wants to steal one of those?

Take the camera with you, just be aware of your surroundings like you should always do anyway. It's called Situational Awareness.
cb at sea Posted July 27, 2016 #7 Share Posted July 27, 2016 I agree...you are as likely (or unlikely) to have your "pockets picked in the Caribbean as you are in your own town! We've never had any issues, in the Caribbean, but hubby caught a young man trying to take his wallet in Vegas once...hubby is pretty quick and grabbed the guy's arm and nearly broke it! Security soon came and escorted the guy out!!!

I have a small point and shoot which fits into my pocket, but whilst it takes good photos, obviously DH's camera is much better.

In Nassau if you are not on an organized tour and are just walking around the local town I would leave the DSLR on the ship for that port. Are you visiting other ports? I carry my camera on my belt with one of these https://www.peakdesign.com/product/clips/ or one of these http://spiderholster.com/black-widow/ Nobody is going to steal it from my belt. It leaves my hands free. I don't have it flopping around on a neck strap. I don't have to stop and fish around in a bag to get at my camera.. Works for me. Treven Posted July 28, 2016 #13 Share Posted July 28, 2016 I carry my DSLR everywhere I go on cruises. I have mine on a BlackRapid RS-7 shoulder strap. No one is going to grab your camera without you knowing about it, with the BlackRapid.
4x4bob Posted July 28, 2016 #14 Share Posted July 28, 2016 Another vote for the BlackRapid camera strap. With it over my left shoulder and hanging down by my right hip I walk with my hand resting on the camera. Can swing it up and take a photo in the blink of a eye. Off ship I use my Nikon DSLR with zoom lens. So the strap helps with weight also. Bob
calliopecruiser Posted July 28, 2016 #15 Share Posted July 28, 2016 I take my DSLR camera with me in an over-the-shoulder camera bag that has room for my other stuff (wallet, phone, sunglasses, etc). I'm aware of pickpocket concerns, but not worried about them particularly (even in Barcelona, one of the worst places in the world for pickpocket risk). It's a risk I'm willing to take in order to take the photos I want.
Rare Crew News Posted July 28, 2016 #16 Share Posted July 28, 2016 I carry my DSLR everywhere I go on cruises. I have mine on a BlackRapid RS-7 shoulder strap. No one is going to grab your camera without you knowing about it, with the BlackRapid. Another vote for BlackRapid. Your arm goes through the strap and the strap then goes across your chest. It attaches to the camera with a screw-in plug that will take a few moments for a thief to unscrew to steal the camera. You will definitely know the camera is in the act of being stolen. Treven Posted July 29, 2016 #20 Share Posted July 29, 2016 Ashland, I'd recommend any of the Sony point & shoot. Check out the cameras at B and H Photo Video. I go into their used section for my camera needs. I bought a Sony DSLR from their used section. Their used equipment comes from people upgrading their cameras; there's absolutely nothing wrong with their used stuff.
OCruisers Posted July 29, 2016 #21 Share Posted July 29, 2016 On the other side of the coin ... I've totally quit carrying a camera of any sort and am honestly enjoying what I'm doing more without concerns about taking pictures. :)

Rare babs135 Posted July 29, 2016 Author #23 Share Posted July 29, 2016 Thanks everyone. Will have a look at the BlackRapid (never heard of it before now!). DH does have a satchel which I think would go cross ways over his shoulder making it more secure so we have a couple of options. OCruisers, I understand your comments and to some extent would agree. However, a pictorial reminder of where we have visited is a lovely reminder of places we have visited.
