Carnival Corp Stock

You have to own the stock before sailing, and send the proof to the address listed (or fax it) a couple of weeks before the cruise.

Right. The only time frame you have to be concerned about is sufficient time to purchase the stock, get a confirmation, send it to HAL, and leave time for that to be processed and a confirmation sent. Two to three weeks is about right.

The Carnival Corp. stock has been a terrific investment for me. RCL and Norwegian stocks keep on soaring, but my 100 shares have kept increasing in number, price and the benefits. which the latter companies don't have. I have recouped my initial investment in stockholder credits alone.

Beyond buying to enjoy the benefits, I have no opinion about cruise lines as an investment. The dynamics are constantly changing and they have to cater an ever-increasing variety of tastes and demands to keep cruisers happy. Also, geography is changing: more attention to Asia and Australia. HAL is part of the Carnival Corp., so that's the stock you buy. Under Carnival's umbrella are a plethora of subsidiaries.

Compared to other hospitality companies, cruise lines, in these days of concerns for terrorism, can move their ships and itineraries quickly. I know absolutely nothing about profits in other hospitality industries, but for my money all major cruise lines offer a very good product. To us, cruises are the only way to go. I think they offer great value.

RCL and NCL are more volutile stocks than CCL, thus you can see greater runups in these two than CCL (Carnival), but also the declines are greater (note what happened a few days ago). I like CCL stock better, due to this and the nice 3% (approx.) dividend.

Does anyone happen to know if you purchase shares after booking a cruise, if you can still get the onboard credit? I think it is 100 shares?

Absolutely, you can do that. I just did that myself for my upcoming Prinsendam cruise on 9/6. Bought the stock, faxed (important) them my purchase confirmation and contact info per their instructions. It was posted within several hours, although I couldn't see it because I used a travel agent. A confirming call the next day, and they gladly sent me a confirmation email.

The stock has bounced back and forth a bit, probably a good investment. Although I don't buy individual stocks anymore. Also note that CCL goes ex-dividend on 8/22, I think.

Looks like ex-dividend date (date that you have to own the stock to get the dividend that period) is 24 August. We have had it since just after 911($17.78!!) and use it every year for at least one cruise, plus the dividend! Worked out well for us!

Carnival stock is a better investment to us because every HAL cruise the OBC has been applied.

With Celebrity if you have the go big or any variation or a resident rate or any other special you cannot get the OBC for stock.

If you are planning a lot of HAL or other Carnival cruises in the future, it is an excellent investment. Not only do you get a tax free OBC for each cruise, you also get dividends on a regular basis. We have had our dividends buy more Carnival stock rather than taking cash .. this just adds to the dividend yield over time.

Anyway, regardless of timing, one should buy at least 100 shares IMHO>

Bought the stock for the OBC not that much for the investment potential but have been pleasantly surprised at the return on the investment. Just the OBC will 'pay' for the initial stock cost in about 3 more cruises and do love the tax free OBC 'dividend'.

The stock / OBC credit people are probably the better organized at HAL as my TA sends in the information and within a day or 3, I have confirmation of my OBC.

In the long run, the OBC can compensate whatever value is lost on the stock

I went back 5 years and looked at CCL's stock performance. In that time the stock is up approx. 50%, plus you would have averaged over a 3% dividend. Evev right after the Costa disaster, the stock still was above the Aug, 2011 price.

Given the nice 3+% dividend and the aging of US population, I think this stock is a good investement at the current price (I even bought more of it last week myself). The stock OBC is a nice "bonus" for Carnival Company cruisers as well.

One nice thing about CCL stock is that it takes a LOT of money to get into the cruise biz so some kid sitting with his computer in the basement is not very likely to manage to do a 3D print of a 300 million dollar ship.

If every stock I have ever owned had done as well as my CCL stock I'd be on a world cruise now instead of sitting here typing on CC.

LOL - ditto. It's the one stock I said couldn't be touched. I knowing better, bought it strictly for the OBC. It has nearly already paid for itself in that alone.

Aside from the capital gains and dividends, I get at least an 8% return on obc every year. and considering that obc is U.S. $ and not Canadian - it's even better :)

Good points, plus I might add that their "hotels" can be floated away from out of favor places to more favorable ones.

they can also be moved into areas for a week or two for use as regular hotels for special events such as the Olympics (currently NCL), Super Bowl (several times), Hurricane Relief (Katrina) etc.

I remember that three (I believe) Carnival Ships were sent to New Orleans to provide support for hurricane Katrina

Federal officials are chartering three of Carnival Cruise Lines' ships for six months, part of a plan to provide shelter for as many as 7,000 people displaced by devastating Hurricane Katrina.

The three ships — the Ecstasy, Sensation and Holiday — will be pulled from regular use starting Monday.

Five ships were used at Jacksonville for the Super Bowl

The first ship, the 490-passenger Seven Seas Navigator from Radisson Seven Seas Cruise Line, is to dock about 7:30 a.m. today in front of the Adam's Mark hotel downtown. Later this morning, the Carnival Miracle, big enough to hold 2,108 passengers, will berth at the JaxPort Cruise Terminal on the Northside.

On Thursday, three vessels from Holland America Line will join the cargo ships at the Talleyrand Marine Terminal, 2 miles northeast of Alltel Stadium.

2014 Super Bowl in New York

The 4,028-passenger Norwegian Getaway ship will serve as lodging and an entertainment venue for Super Bowl XLVIII. The boat will dock in New York for the Feb. 2 game and will offer lodging starting the Thursday before the game through the Monday morning after the event.

Given some time, I think there were more. I seem to remember west coast of Canada for something and maybe more.

Found another:

Hotel rooms are so scarce for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver next February that four cruise ships have been chartered to add temporary rooms during the Games. Correspondent Tom Banse reports.

The Canadian government has chartered three cruise ships to house all the extra security personnel it’s bringing in for the Olympics.

Seattle-based Holland America Line is supplying two of those three ships from its West Coast fleet.

Way back in 2009 Psgrs were complaining that a couple of HAL ships were being chartered & used as hotel rooms for the 2010 Olympics.. HammyBee a long time poster mentioned it.. Haven't seen her on CC in a long time.. Believe at that time Booked Psgrs received a nice credit toward a new cruise plus OBC for being bumped onto another ship..:) Assume that HAL would still do the same for anyone who must change their plans due to their ships being chartered..

When we were working it would have been a major problem for us to change our vacations...However, since our retirement it would not cause a major problem unless our Pet sitter could not take care of our PUP..

  • 2 weeks later...

May I jump in here and ask a semi-unrelated question?

I've owned CCL stock (bought at about it's low in early 2009). Just took Carnival cruise #25 and have 1 14-night HAL cruise, so I've received quite a lot of OBC over the past few years.

I have Carnival cruises #26 & #27 booked, but I'm thinking of switching my January cruise to HAL since I just received a great casino offer. HAL has been sending me promos ever since my delightful Zaandam circle Hawaii sailing in 2010. And I've wanted to sail them again. However, I mostly sail solo, and HAL's prices just have been too high for me. I "need" to sail 2 or 3 times a year ;) and if I had to pay the going rates for HAL, my budget wouldn't allow that.

Anyway, Carnival pretty much gives the OBC for any sailing. I also own RCL stock (keep hoping to sail Celebrity before too much longer) but have read on the boards that they are VERY difficult to work with and mostly deny the shareholder's credit if you book any sort of package deal.

Just want to be sure that if I switch my booking over the HAL that I'll still qualify for the s/h OBC even though I'd book under a great Casino rate (promo PX).

Thanks!

Yes, you will qualify for the Carnival Shareholder OBC notwithstanding that you book under a HAL promo. Added bonus, I think you will find HAL very easy to deal with on the OBC.

Smooth sailing ...

Thanks to all of you for this very informative thread. I bought 100 shares of Carnival stock last week, faxed the purchase confirmation to Holland America this morning, and had an email within two hours confirming a $250 OBC for my Koningsdam transatlantic sailing. Many thanks!
