Thank you so much for posting this! Great to see what it was like 20+ years ago compared to today..wow, things have changed!

What also struck me though..sigh..was 1994 really so long ago that things from back then look so dated? I guess so. I'm getting OLD.

In 1994 my first child was 1 year old and I was too busy trying to just keep our heads above water..I don't think I even knew about cruises, except maybe a few episodes of the Love Boat. Who would have thought I'd be doing this some day?

This was really cool to see! It seemed so boring back then, is it a lot more fun nowadays?

I think the games, audience participation made it fun back then more so than today. However, the comedy shows and other programs are better now.

I took my first cruise, carnival of course, in dec 1995 and I remember the capers et al. Fond memories, good times....They used to have the casino enclosed in glass panels so one could not set foot into the casino, when the boat was in port. Now of course the casino is completely open and they just turn the slots on electronically.

I think today that people would complain about women putting bananas down their pants and ping pong balls in their tops. :(

That was fun to watch. Great job putting it all together.

My first cruise was in '92 but not on Carnival.

I loved the horseracing and the limbo contests by the pool and haven't seen them on cruises in a long time.

Ha! I was on a trip with my then 13 y/o son. There was a pool game where they threw all kinds of fruit and vegetables in the pool and contestants were to put as many as they could in their bathing suits. This woman in a teeny tiny black bikini stuffed so much in her top her boobs fell out. She didn't care, she wanted to win. The emcee said "wait, this is a family show!" My sons eyes were popping out of his head as were those of many of the men around who saw those bodacious boobs!

I remember getting mad when they changed to Fun Times, still wish they were Capers. I see myself caping all over I guess.

The Kathy Gifford commercial was the best ever. Wishe they'd bring it back.

Horseracing was so much fun! And the pillow fights in the pool cracked me up.

Enjoy and if you have any questions from someone who has cruised on Carnival since 1994, let me know.....

This one's for any Carnival history buffs or anyone interested in seeing what's changed with Cruising Carnival over the years.

To celebrate 25 cruises on Carnival, my DH dug up video, all the carnival capers, pictures and more from our 1994 first Carnival cruise on the M/S Holiday and worked his magic editing it together for a cool look back in history. He even found the old ads with Kathy Lee Gifford (you know the "if you can see me now..." ones!)

Anyway, check out his YouTube video

to see what it was like to cruise on Carnival back when the drinking age was 18 onboard, there was actually a midnight buffet (video included) and you could visit the bridge and the galley without having to pay $100!

Amazing. What a great video. I totally remember those Carnival commercials. I was way younger and thought they were corny. Wow, if my friends could see me now....

I went on my first cruise at some point in the early 90s with my parents. I remember the different theme nights for dinner, the waiters had a different outfit for every theme. And the big todo with the gala buffet, waiting on line to go in and take pictures, and then go on line again for the food. And I remember they used to hand out these paper photos or placemats of the ship, I used to get people's autographs on it as a kid, the waiter, cruise director, kids club people, guest services, anybody really. Fun times. I remember thinking those ships were so huge back then. Now they are like yachts next to some of these mega ships.

You both seem to be enjoying life and yourself back then and that got me intrigue into knowing more about these fun people you are. Check out all the rest of your video and must say even know you seem to have so much fun onto it vacation with your family. All this to say I hope I get to meet you one day on a cruise ship as you reflect what vacation is all about.

We did that same itinerary on the Carnival Imagination in December 1996. What I used to love about old itineraries was the long day in port. And the cruiselines that used to actually run the tours. We were dropped off in Cancun to visit Tulum early in the morning, took the ferry back to Cozumel and then spent hours that evening drinking in Cozumel since the ship didn't leave until midnight. Now they want you back onboard drinking their drinks!

The ships used to even have the photographers from the ship on the excursions so you could then purchase the photos back onboard. I have Carnival logo shots of us at Tulum.

Some of the lines even had specialty programs for their excursions. Norwegian used to be big on snorkeling and diving (we first cruised with them in 1998). They had divemasters and equipment onboard and they arranged both snorkeling and diving trips in each port - you ended up diving with the same divemasters and ship equipment at each port.

But in today's dollars it was MUCH more expensive to cruise then......

My first cruise wasn't until 2001, but it was on Jubilee, so just seeing the layout of the Holiday brings back memories. I kept intending to sail one of the others in the class and just didn't get around to it before they were all out of the fleet.

It was 5 nights RT from Tampa that stopped at Grand Cayman and Cozumel.

I didn't realize that bridge tours were available back then or I would've done one.

I miss the Capers, too.

I didn't even have TV at the time those commercials were out, but I'm sure I would've hit the "mute" button if I had! :p

Just sailed Carnival #25 on the Vista Inaugural. I certainly never expected to sail this many times (or this often). I was pretty sea sick on Jubilee. It wasn't until I discovered Cruise Critic and read about Ginger Root (and so many other useful hints) that I cured that problem and started sailing more often and on longer cruises. Of course, having DD no longer a dependent helped my overall budget, but I now sail solo a lot so still get to pay 200% most of the time!

And, yes, cruising today is cheaper than it was then. You won't read comments from me about cutbacks. I'm grateful that Carnival provides such a good value for my vacation dollars.

If I want all those "luxuries" from the Good Old Days, I'll just cough up a lot more money and sail a more upscale line (which I hope to do in the not-too-distant future). For now, two more coming up on Carnival. After that, we'll see.

Enjoyed the videos! Thanks for posting.

I agree that while there have been cutbacks in places, overall the cruise prices are relatively less expensive vs back then.
