Island Lady's live adventure on Oasis of the Seas

Recommended Posts

OK...have never done a live review, and don't have a decent camera (but

don't know how to post pics anyway)...but will do my best at what I can

for updates and review.

Bear with me....here goes:

Day One:

Drove the half hour trip from home to Park N Cruise to drop off our vehicle,

and board the shuttle with our luggage right at 10 am. Quick drive to the

terminal, but ridiculous long wait in the shuttle line as we were in a single

line to drop off, having to wait for many large buses to drop passengers and

luggage to the porters. Lots of empty parking bays empty with waiting

porters...but for some reason they would not let the little shuttles past

the big buses. In line for 45 minutes! They need two lines

to be more efficient.

Once we finally were allowed in, we had a quick walk into the terminal,

10 minute check in, then walked right on the ship. They were calling

all levels of C&A already.

Was happy to find Solarium Bistro already opened at 11:15. Really nice

lunch with everything very fresh and tasty!

One thing I am not happy with is the lock out of the DL until after muster

drill. Thought it was our cards, so we waited in line at GS for

20 minutes to have them changed. Went up to try again, and same thing.

Finally called the DL concierge to ask what was going on, and she told

me "all ships lock out the DL until after muster drill"...which of course I

knew was not true. I quipped at her "Well the SL is open..so why is

there a difference?" Of course no answer to that. Not such a

big deal for others, but the DL or CL is where we like to hang out until

our cabin opens.

JS cabin 11236...very nice location, lots and lots of storage, quiet, and

already met our great stateroom attendant Joel. He is really, really on

top of his game. Does not miss a detail! Being in a JS, I went up to make

reservations in CK for dinner...with no problems at all getting time and days we

wanted.

Weather: Not bad yet, but wind picking up dramatically. A real "howly"

as DH calls it!!

Muster drill for us was next to GS at 4 pm. Weather now getting even worse,

and captain makes the announcement that we are not going to Nassau as

scheduled tomorrow (Monday). We are instead doing a first day at sea,

then pull into San Juan PC on Tuesday (today). But not getting there today

until 4 pm. Not a lot of day time to explore, but we will get off the ship

anyway for a short exploration walk. One thing funny...the entire crowd

cheered when the captain made this announcement. Guess not a lot of

pax were disappointed. I like all ports...so no matter to me.

Waited until "magic hour" which for us is 15-20 minutes after first seating

begins to enter the DL for happy hour. Plenty of empty seats available

by then (though we heard it was really crowded earlier). Met a nice couple,

invited them to join us, then another joined us also. Good time was had by

all.

Forgot to mention: I took Chandom's advice and walked into 150 CP after we

boarded to make reservations for our "First Night Done Right". As I expected,

I got resistance from the man at the podium. He told us he would have to charge the extra.

I told him that was not what others had done. His manger came up and told

him to accept the promo plan as stated. I think wording will change soon to

reflect the rules they want. He told us it was designed to send us to Giovannis. Hmm.

BOGO night at 29.00 plus one free...would be 29.00. $15.00 times two reserved

online for First Night...30.00. Yeah...real bargain there for D+!!

So, at 7:30 we showed up for our reserved time at CP 150. Meal not as great

as we had previously, but was nice quiet dinner. Only about 5 tables occupied.

No charge except for the extra tip we left. Score one for Island Lady. :D

Weather report for later in the evening:

By now the seas are really rough. Not much rain yet, but the wind is unreal.

When we walked through Park Avenue, it I thought it was raining..but it was not.

The pools and hot tubs above us were being whipped so hard it was blowing

water out of them and spraying it everywhere into the wind. It was all coming

from above...but not the sky!! Was pouring down on us!!

Even with the bad seas, on this "tank of the seas"...I did not feel much rocking

at all. Of course our cabin is mid ship, but it takes a lot to make this huge

resort at sea to move side to side or tail bob!

Evening Aqua show cancelled for obvious reasons. Will try to catch it tonight if

possible.

Went to bed early. Wind and rain coming in sideways by then, all the way into

the balcony glass. Our balcony, including the doors, lounger, table and chairs

are all covered in wet salt spray.

All in all...despite some minor problems...we are having a good time.

Right now I am about to head to our M&M at 9:30 at Jazz on Four, then

10:45 upper tier at the Aqua Theater.

Live day two coming up next post.

Aww...thanks everyone! :)

OK..with that vote of confidence...on wards I go:

Day two, Monday.

This was of course our newly scheduled day at sea. Weather really bad, all upper

decks closed off. The sun worshipers were not happy cruisers to say the least, but

hey...it's the luck of the draw with Mother Nature.

Really didn't do much but read, hang out, walk a LOT exploring the ship, check

our photos..yuck!! (I know..if you want a better picture..bring a better face! LOL!)

Breakfast was in the WJ...quite good actually and did not get crowded until later.

We are early risers (much to the DH's annoyance..hah!). Checked out the breakfast

in the Solarium, but not as impressed. Wondered over to check Wipe Out Cafe, but

they are closed to everyone but the very large booked group of Jewish families

(now I know why the ship sold out so quick). Is also the reason there are so

many children on board (unusual for this time of year). They have also taken

over Blaze and other venues. Nice people, but wow...what a large group!

Now that Wipe out Cafe is a no go for fresh made to order eggs, (and the hostess

there mistakenly told us the WJ would do them this week..not) I settled for the pre

cooked egg dishes in the bins at the egg station. Was pretty good both yesterday

and today but stayed away from the "powdered egg scrambles".

More wondering around, some WIFI time, and reading in the cabin (too wild outside

to sit in the sun to read as the DH usually does).

Lunch was in the MDR, and PACKED!! Enjoyed our favorite Tutti salad bar, they

also had hot entrees and sides on the buffet, including 3 huge cakes with 2 vats of ice

cream they were serving. Did not go away hungry!!

Watched a movie in the cabin, enjoyed some wine, got ready for formal night.

Once again magic hour was just the ticket in the DL. One of the couples from

the previous night joined us again. Stuck to beer and wine, (too many gin

and tonics first night!).

Dinner was BOGO in Giovannis at 7:30. Every table was booked, and one

table had a group of 20 or so that were obviously enjoying plenty of adult

beverages most of the day. Quite loud, but once they left, it was not bad.

DH and I shared Caprese salad, scallops (terrible!), I had a pasta dish and

DH had the spinach crepes (wonderful!). Good service, good time. Still

raining in Central park, but by then not sure if it was pool water or sky water

since it was dark by then.

Did not do a show later, so simply enjoyed early bed time. Made reservations

for Cats later in the week with our DL concierge.

On to day three.

On the scrambled eggs thing in Windjammer.

Keep your eyes open, it was in the one of the middle two islands.

Day three Tuesday.

Seas are calming down...and the sun is out. Still windy, but good to see

the sun. Balcony still soggy wet with salt spray over everything, and though

I have wiped it down 3 times today...comes right back. Still pretty windy

but should continue to improve.

Breakfast once again in the WJ.

Meet and Mingle was in Jazz on 4, deck four at 9:30. Had a good

turn out, about 50-60 people. Activities manager lead the group,

but took most of the time talking about herself (nice lady, just not

focused on group at hand). Prizes given of hats and the usual "el

cheapo" wine. Was nice she asked each member where they were

from and screen name, but did not really talk about cruise critic

much more than that. Most just got up and left right away after door

prizes were over. Not one of the more impressive Meet and Mingles.

Oh well.

Upper tier party was at the Aqua Theater, now that the weather had

improved. We were treated to a nice mini show of very talented

divers. Wow!! Nice bonus! New cruise director from Rhapsody,

(Patricio formerly from Rhapsody until 3 weeks ago) recognized

us right away. Great memory..how do they do that?

Introduced most of the officers, and got the usual speech from

the Next Cruise lady. Very generous with the free drinks.

Thought it was done well! Huge turn out!

Break down:

19 Pinnacles

150 D+

476 Diamonds

Did not catch the

total Emerald and Platinum...but I

think it was around 700 or more.

Lunch in the MDR again. This time we enjoyed the really good

jumbo burgers on Brioche rolls with fresh fries. Tasty! Surprised

to get such a good burger outside of paying for them at

Johnny Rockets! Very good ice tea. No dessert for me,

but DH enjoyed some cake.

We were supposed to be pulling into San Juan scheduled for 4:00,

but captain just announced we won't be pulling in until 5:30 now

due to rough travel seas. Will do a little wino on the balcony to

watch us pull into port. It will be getting dark by the time we get

in, but lights should be pretty! We will be docking at the old town

dock alongside of Freedom (one of my favorite ships I miss so much!).

Not sure if we will get off the ship or not. Biting into happy

hour in the DL. ;)

Did I say wine? OMG!! Some one from C&A sent us yet

another bottle of bubbly on ice!! That makes two bubblies,

and two full bottles of red wine gifted to us from C&A.

Definitely did not need to take our allowed two

bottles of wine on board at embarkation! urble..hick up!

Have reservations tonight at CK, and in fact made reservations

for the rest of the week for that venue at 7:30. Works good for

our timing of visiting the DL for before dinner cocktails at

6 pm. May change them out if we are not impressed.

First time in CK for us.

OK..live report up to date, as I finish typing this in the DL

using their computer. All I take on board is my little smart

phone, no lap top to drag on. ;)

Next report, a continuation of Day 3 later.

Thank you for the excellent live review.

Question? Is it just Oasis Class that doesn't cook made to order eggs in WJ? On Serenade/Enchantment, they both offered made to order eggs?

Correct, no made to order eggs in Windjammer on Oasis Class.

WJ does have some precooked fried eggs and premade omelettes.

Only Wipeout Cafe has made to order eggs. Outside of a full service/sit down venue.

Sounds like an eggcellent plan.

Sorry couldn't resist...

LOL!! Gotta love your sense of humor! :D

Of course you would be bummed out on this cruise, since

the Jewish group have the private function sign posted outside

the Wipe out Cafe. No fresh made omelettes in there on

this sailing. :(

Will look for the "fresh made eggs" bins tomorrow morning

in the WJ.

Only other place for omelettes would be MDR, but I am not

a fan of MDR for breakfast. Lunch yes...breakfast not

so much.

Johnny Rockets is free for breakfast and does fresh omelets. Troy-There is an great breakfast menu in CK. You will love it! You can get eggs any way you want and the buttermilk/blueberry pancakes are to die for, or anyway, were on HOTS.
