Convince me to try Celebrity (from royal)

We've been loyal to royal (ugh, mrktg slogan right there) but feel their prices, and ship sizes are getting larger than I want to deal with - convince me to switch and try Celebrity.

We are approaching 60 yo age range, travel to caribbean in jan/feb - usually interested in beaching it, maybe a tour

thanks all

We are basically the same as you, loyal royals, approaching 60, love the Caribbean and beaches. When we celebrated our 30th anniversary we knew we wanted to sail the Mediterranean, so started looking at ships and itineraries. We ended up on Celebrity Reflection, and are so happy we chose it.

The food, and service were definitely a step up from what we had experienced on RCI cruises. The ships are beautiful, but not over the top glitzy. The pace on the ships is not as frenetic. We have another Celebrity cruise coming up soon, and we're both looking forward to a really relaxing week.We still cruise RCI ships, but are very glad we decided to branch out and cruise Celebrity.

We are having the exact opposite discussion in our house.

We are Elite Plus on Celebrity and are considering doing our first RCL cruise.

We are sailing on Silhouette in July, and if I find a RCL cruise that we like we are going to book during that sailing.

We sail for different reasons than many...for example, we don't really care about the food, we don't eat in the MDR and never dress up.

We really sail for the itineraries and to relax.

We find a quite spot to relax on sea days.

It is funny how perceptions are different...for example, people on here complain about Celebrities lack of port differences year to year.

We really have no complaints about Celebrity, but I think a fair review would say it is just as good as many other lines...

We do like the non-smoking areas. Not sure how many of the other lines (or RCL specifically) compare in the abundance of them.

If I was you (OP), I would try Celebrity...You will have a nice cruise...You can decide how "nice" it is once you are done.

Mostly loyal to Royal, became Diamond in 2015. Sailed with Celebrity for the first time last year and absolutely loved it.

I'll be leaving for O'Hare airport in about 2 hours...we sail on Celebrity Reflection tomorrow! :D

Wow - thanks all - Great responses !

the 'perks' that they are advertising now, is that pretty typical ? as in I don't need to book today ?

The perks have a life of their own!

They aren't going away.

(btw some cruises you can get priced with NO perks...many times that is a better deal)

We have only been on one Royal, it was the Radiance, we didn't like it, the food was so bad, we nearly starved! and that's hard to do on a cruise! lol

We love Celebrity. We Love the Equinox! It is better service better food, better entertainment compared to the one Royal, and NCL, Carnival, even Princess, although we do like Princess, Celebrity is our first choice.

I am starting to have the same itch! Feeling a little restless with Royal. My problem is I have no idea where to begin as far as choosing a Celebrity ship to sail. Should I just look for the newest? Can someone share with me the difference in the difference classes of ships?

Thank you!

Have sailed all the M class ships at least twice. They are older and smaller but still good size. I love them. What I love most are the aft facing cabins on the M class. (Not the same on s class) The cabins are a bit larger but the balconies are very much larger.

Have been on two of the S class. They are newer and larger. Not Oasis or Allure large. I'm not sure why but we really love the Reflection. There isn't much difference in the s class ships but the Reflection just seems to call our name. Lol

The buffet on S class is a larger space and I feel better set up. There are a few more options because if more space.

Both classes are peaceful and relaxed. But if you want to party and or dance you can find options for that.

We usually try to do Aqua class on either ship. There is a separate dining room for Aqua called Blu. It's great to eat breakfast there. Sit down and be waited on. Not open for lunch but open for dinner.

So if you want shinier and newer go for s class. If older and more classic go M class.

Or, try the new Edge coming out early 2019. Check out the videos on their website. It is a very smooth and classy looking ship in my opinion.

From Celebrity's site:

There's a reason people trust their precious vacation days to us. Actually, there are hundreds of them. Every day. Every night. We welcome the world on board. Extraordinary destinations. Culinary excellence. Intuitive service. Luxurious accommodations. And stunning design. That's the Celebrity way. The Celebrity distinction. Modern luxury lives here.

THE CELEBRITY DISTINCTION

We started out with Royal, and after our first two cruises tried an Alaska cruise on a ship no longer in the Celebrity fleet. We've sailed Celebrity ever since with the exception of one New England cruise on Royal. That cruise reminded us how wonderful the level of service is on Celebrity. I also appreciate being able to enjoy a smokeless casino. As far as the ships, you really can't go wrong. The older M class are well maintained and a bit smaller. The S class are a bit more modern and larger, but you NEVER will feel like cattle. We were a bit concerned that the larger size on the S class would come with diminished service but that was certainly never the case. We never felt that the increased passenger load made any area crowded. In fact, the S class ships felt much less crowded. The layout of the S Class OVC worked better. The main difference between S and M classes was that Concierge and Aqua class staterooms are slightly bigger than standard verandah cabins on the M class and the same size on S class. You really can't make a mistake with any ship in the Celebrity fleet. The differences between the two lines is, as has been previously stated the greater level of service and sophistication on Celebrity. There are less families with young children, since there are no carousels, water slides, rock climbing walls, bumper cars, wave simulators or zip lines. The specialty restaurants on the S class ships IMHO are better than M class (Murano being the main reason) and we prefer all the Celebrity specialty restaurants to those we experienced in Royal, but (as has been said previously) food is subjective. There are also sommeliers in the MDR (as well as in Blu) as well as in the specialty restaurants. We've been introduced to several new wines that we've come to enjoy. There is no need to make show reservations on any of the Celebrity ships, and we like that, we find it more laid back and relaxing to not have to stress about our entertainment. There is live music and dancing around the ship as well. We tend to dine at 8:30 and usually don't finish dinner much before 10 PM. We never go straight to sleep! There's easily something to do until at least midnight. I guess it comes down to are you ready to experience a change. If so, try it, and make up your mind. Either way...happy sails!

To give you a better idea of SIZE on the different ships, The "Millie" Class (2,000 pax)is almost identical in size to the Radiance Class (2,400 pax) ships. They 91,000 tons (give or take a little). We like the Layout of the Celebrity better because the Main Lounge (live band at night ect.) is in the center whereas on the Radiance Class, it is all the way Aft. (except for the Centrum on the RCI ships, but that always gets too crowded.

As for the Solstice Class (2,800 pax), they are around 121,000 tons (that would be halfway between the size of the Radiance and the Voyager (3,600 pax). They are the newer ships and pretty "Modern" in design.

Hope This Helps.

Why would I, or anyone else on these boards, be interested in "convincing you" to try Celebrity? You can certainly read the boards and decide for yourself whether you want to book a trip and try it.

For goodness sake!!

I say go for it, I love Soltice class.

Exactly!!!

This thread actually helped me decide to keep a Summit cruise instead of booking an Anthem cruise. Late 50s and we cruise without adult children and prefer the quiet and relaxing atmosphere of celebrity cruising.

Prefer Solstice class for two reasons, well three. Size and newness of ship. Location of aqua class and sky suite cabins. Size and configuration of sky suites. Larger than millenium class cabins.

Also on M class, the sky suites on deck 6 are slightly obstructed view IMO. Lifeboats on deck 5. We had 6099 and the light from the access gantry for the lifeboats shined into our balcony. Very bright. I didn't like sitting out there at night.

Solstice class. Unless you want to sail to Bermuda..... :)

I know I am probably in the minority, but I have been on the Anthem and the Summit. I actually hated the Anthem. It is the only ship I have been on that I will never return to. Love the Summit and would go on her again in a heart beat!

Just today DH and I booked our first Celebrity cruise. We are Diamond+ on Royal so I think we are Elite on Celebrity. We booked a repositioning cruise so we didn't get any perks but we are excited about this itinerary, 19 night on the Solstice Tahitian Treasures Cruise!
