Aqua Points upgrade offer .... how many CC points ?

Have just received a promotional email offering a "free Aqua Class upgrade for the price of a balcony".

It seems a good deal, shame they are now only offering one perk in the promo.

My question is will I receive 5 Captains Club point (for Aqua) or the standard 3 points for a Balcony ?

Presumably it would be cheeky to ask Celebrity for the one category upgrade.

A booked cabin upgrade offer is different than a promotional non prebooked offer. I would suggest that the former is at the originally booked cabin category points as the latter booking would earn at the booked category. Hence I believe you would get the Aqua points. However Celebrity is known for fine print that benefits them so really only they will know...well hopefully if you get the right correctly informed rep.

Matt, first it would not be cheeky to ask Celebrity, they made the offer, they make the rules so they should have the correct answer. That said, we got upgrades on our last two cruises, one to AQ and one to CC from our purchased balconies because there were big price drops after final payment. In both cases we got the 5 points per night so that was a nice bonus for us. If I had your offer and I found a cruise I liked at a price I liked, I would grab the AQ offer for BLU alone and not sweat the points. Points are a nice bonus but BLU is the real issue for me.

You'd be getting Aqua points as that's the grade you're booking.

It's just marketing where they have the same price for both categories. However, you're booking an Aqua cabin at an offered price so you'll get Aqua points; doesn't matter how much other cabins cost.

Correct, there must be more Aqua cabins unsold on the itinerary so they 'offer' them as a promotion, but the OP will have booked and paid for that category at a certain price and so should get the points.

They could have just as easily reduced the price of Aqua cabins and no one would have been any the wiser - it's an incentive to think you are getting a 'bargain' - marketing eh .

Curious...how far out is your cruise date?

Your Membership Status

To qualify for enrollment in the Captain's Club, you must be 18 years of age or older.

Your Captain's Club membership falls into one of six levels: Preview Level (prior to sailing), Classic Level (after first completed cruise), Select Level (after earning 150 Club Points), Elite Level (after earning 300 Club Points), Elite Plus Level (after earning 750 Club Points) and Zenith Level (after earning 3,000 Club Points). After you complete qualifying sailings, your membership will automatically advance to the applicable membership level. You will enjoy your new membership benefits on your next sailing on Celebrity Cruises. Your membership number will remain the same as you advance to the next level.

Club Points

Beginning November 25, 2013, Celebrity Cruises Captain's Club switched from membership levels based on "tier credits" to "Club Points." Prior to November 25, 2013, members earned one credit for sailing, one credit by sailing on an itinerary of 12-nights or longer, including Cruisetours (applicable to sailings on or after January 1, 2003); and earned one credit by sailing in a Concierge Class stateroom, AquaClass® stateroom, or Suite (applicable to sailings on or after January 1, 2004). After November 25, 2013, Club Points are earned based on stateroom category purchased and length of cruise including Cruisetours when you sail with Celebrity Cruises or Azamara Club Cruises. Celebrity Cruises makes it possible for you to earn up to eighteen Club Points per night.*

The Captain's Club program terms are subject to change without prior notice.

*Complimentary sailings, Seminar at Sea, Travel Agent rates, and employee rates do not earn Club Points in the program. Azamara Club Cruises Note: For a limited time, guests who sail on Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club cruises will earn Club Points toward their memberships in both Captain's Club and Le Club Voyage, regardless of which brand they sail. Both Captain's Club and Le Club Voyage members will enjoy the benefits of their tier levels on both lines. Program terms are subject to change.

** Reduced rate upgrades, pre-cruise and onboard, will earn Club Points at the original stateroom category purchased, and NOT the category of the upgraded stateroom.

**Captain's Club members will earn Club Points for the total number of nights of the Celebrity Exploration packages based on the cruise stateroom category. Please note that Club Points will be awarded to all members retroactively starting from August 2014. This applies ONLY to Celebrity Exploration Packages and excludes Celebrity City Stay, Book & Go or any other vacation package.

I was called by Celebrity and offered the upgrade for $300. I was NOT ELEGIBLE for Aqua points. It is in the fine print

Are you referring to the exact same promotion as the OP? Only it sounds like you had previously booked another stateroom and then were subsequently called by X and offered an upgrade for a reduced rate, not the same as booking an Aqua cabin at the onset of the reservation at a set given price.

Not the same situation.

If you book a cabin and then are offered an upgrade for a fee or for free, you will only earn the points associated with your original booking.

If you have not yet booked, and you receive an offer to book any class at a lower class price, you will receive the points associated with the booking. In other words, and in this case, he was offered a booking opportunity in Aqua at the price of a regular balcony price. He would then receive the points associated with the aqua cabin since that is the status of his original booking.

In order to answer the OP, we would need to know whether it is a new booking offer or an existing booking offer.

I have never seen an existing booking offer made via a promotional mailing. It generally comes from Celebrity direct or your TA (whomever holds the booking reservation).

The answer would be based on whether the original booking was already made or would be made from the offer.

Those type of promos are offered quite frequently over here - 'pay the same rate as an oceanview and get a balcony'. As I stated above, it's all marketing hype; instead of just advertising a price for the balcony cabin, they state it's a free upgrade (usually for an obstructed 2D to get rid of them as they have many left in the inventory). In that case, the pax has booked a balcony from the start and is therefore entitled to the points for booking a balcony. This is not the same as your situation.

Thanks everyone for the responses.

I received the offer via email and is valid for certain sailings as long as I book in the next seven days.

The cruise I am looking at is the Solstice, 21 March 2018 from Sydney.

Am hoping to get the Aqua Points and experience, as I'm getting closer to Elite Plus.

And I have made the booking today - Celebrity assure me it will be five points per night because Ive booked in Aqua.

First time Ive seen such an offer in Australia, in ten years of cruising with X

That's unfortunate. Both RCL and Celebrity have frequently run such offers here. However, the benefits need to be evaluated each time - for example, I've seen it run from one discounted promotion, to this offer, with no change in the higher level price and the lower level actually increased in price!

Technically, the higher end is discounted from the regular (five star) price, but the nature to increase bookings means the sale price may not be dissimilar from previous offers.

You will, as quoted above, your booking is the Aqua stateroom from the onset ;).
