this posts makes me think of a situation we have coming up in August. We are cruising with our potty trained 3 year granddaughter. She is quite the daredevil. I know she would love to try all the slides but she is too small to go on any but the smallest slide. We know this ahead of time, so we will just steer clear of the slides. What she doesn't know/see she won't miss.

I knew I had read the restrictions when we were planning a cruise with one of the GD's who was still in diapers. It didn't take but a couple of seconds to find it on RCL www site under FAQ's.

Q: Are there any restrictions regarding children in the pools? A: Please note: Due to public health regulations, children in diapers, swim diapers, pull-ups or who are not COMPLETELY toilet trained are not allowed in the pools, whirlpools or H2O zone. Children in diapers or who are not toilet trained may use the Baby Splash Zone specially designated for them on the Freedom of the Seas®, Liberty of the Seas®, Independence of the Seas®, Oasis of the Seas®, and Allure of the Seas®.

The article does not say what ship they were on, but the photo looks like an Oasis class ship, which as stated above do have the baby splash zones, so the daughter could have had water fun time, just not in an actual pool

I'm sure there are plenty of people who have taken a 1 year old on a cruise ship but having had a child that young at one point, I can't help wondering what the hell these people were thinking. Not just about the pool thing, but bringing a baby on a cruise ship in general. We tried taking our daughter on a local (car) vacation when she was just a few months old and the amount of work that went into the whole production made the entire trip very hectic and not relaxing at all. I can't imagine spending thousands upon thousands of dollars to do the same.

For those that can't open it, here's the essential part:

I booked a cruise with Royal Caribbean UK for four adults and two children. Only after our daughters had been in the ship’s pool for 45 minutes were we informed that our youngest could not use the swimming facilities as she wears swim nappies.

We were not informed of this when booking the holiday, but the company insists it is a well-known policy. However, there is no mention of it in the “essential information” we were sent after booking.

I understand that rules are rules, but the cruise was advertised as a family holiday and if we had been made aware of the restriction we would never have booked. I couldn’t face a week of trying to keep my one-year-old out of the water so we ended up disembarking and lost out on a £5,000 holiday.

Incorrect description. Two adults and four children in their group. Great decision to throw away a lot of money, not to mention the holiday plans, because the two adult children couldn't have their own way....

Google is your friend, the author of the letter to the Guardian needs to check it out. Stupid Brit writing to a stupid paper, with lazy journalists.

The parent "could't face a week" of keeping the daughter out of the pool... I suppose these people let their children run the show, and frankly, there are only 2 about sea days on that sailing? How much time are you planning to spend in the pool?

Can you imagine the degree of "precious snowflake" this child will be if her parents are willing to forfeit a family vacation because she cannot use a pool at one year old??!!

I've taken a one year old on a cruise before and if there was a venue that was not appropriate for him, I didn't take him. How else was he going to know about it or get there???

Had I known Junior would insist on going to the Casino and Cigar Club before boarding I'd have never booked and just gone to Sesame Place. :')

Same here, our DD couldn't use the pool on the first few cruises we were on because she was too young. So guess what...she didn't use it. We discovered the rules as well. We've also bumped into a couple rules through the years we didn't know as well, and so we don't do those things, unless the line is allowing us to do it anyway (happens sometimes, where they waive rules).

Dumb reason for leaving a cruise though.

What!? You mean you didn't kick up a fuss? Storm off the Ship ?

That would've shown them

Lots of people (including ourselves) have taken a baby, toddler or kid on cruises and had a great time. You're on a cruise, it's much easier then a car vacation, where you can get out and walk around when you want. But we certainly didn't complain if one or two things came up and we couldn't do something we, or the infant, wanted to do. (Same thing happens on land vacations too). Really it's that or sit at home, which isn't much fun at all as you have to do all the work then, with no relaxing. :) We certainly didn't flip out and abandon our cruise over what's generally a minor kink in the vacation.

Ha! :)

Maybe they should have started a riot on board. Or demanded the other passengers stick up for them and do a mass walk-off of the ship to show RCCL.

I just told my 13yo the story, and she said "That's stupid, why would they leave over that". Apparently kids know better.

I can't believe they couldn't see watching over their one year old for a week. Doesn't that kind of go with having a one year old? Were they planning on leaving the one year old in the pool and walking off to the casino? I have never had any young infants but I assume most if not all public pools don't allow diapers.

What about older child that they drug away from pool by leaving didn't stupid idiots think of that! So older child had to forfeit their vacation also because of their stupid parents. Lol bet they tried to get a refund when they returned home.

They tried to get a refund and when they failed, they tried to get the Guardian to get one for them. Failed on both counts.

They're little kids, they can't remember what they had for breakfast! Sounds like the only ones throwing a temper tantrum were the parents who decided to end everyone's vacation before it had even begun, over something very minor.

Do you have kids? LOL they remember! They remember plenty of things....and if it was a fun splash in a pool you bet they will remember and want to go and if the sibling is in the pool do you think a toddler is going to want to sit poolside to watch?

Different strokes I suppose. We took our 22 month-old on a cruise last year and she had a blast (as did we) spending a week with four grandparents and being the star of the show wherever she went.

Next April we're bringing her on a cruise again before she turns three and fully expect she'll have a great time again, and so will we.

Yes, you have to parent your child(ren) on a cruise and that makes it less fully relaxing. But that doesn't make it necessarily less fun.

As for the underlying issue, I sympathize somewhat with the parents. I wouldn't leave a cruise over it, but as some have pointed out it's not as common to ban children in swim diapers from pools in foreign countries as it is here in the States. So there's no good reason for them to have assumed that their child would be banned from the pool or even to go looking for that information necessarily.

RC knows the age of each passenger on the boat. It would be simple for them to send out pre-cruise information about what limitations apply based on a cruiser's age. That simple bit of pro-activity (which could be automated) seems like a minimal effort toward customer satisfaction when you know you have clientele from multiple countries who will have different baseline assumptions about what might or might not be allowed.
