Hurricane Irma Watch

Recommended Posts

So after 10+ Cruises and Stalking this site I am motivated to make a post ;-) This is a great resource to learn everything there is to know!

We flying into Miami on 9/8 going out on the Norwegian "Booze Cruise" Sky for our 10 year Anniversary. It's a short 3 day affair. The itinerary is pretty much in ground zero of the current path of Irma (Nassau, Great Stirrup Cay). At this point we are just waiting and seeing what happens. I hope Norwegian is responsible and considers all the factors. IE, Impact of Embarkation Port, can people get home if Miami is impacted, etc, etc. What I have done to sort of prepare is book a Hotel Stay inland in preparation we might be stuck for a while. However if Irma slams Florida I think we are going to stay home and forgo the flight, etc. The bottom line is folks, this is what life hands us and you have to be willing to take a loss without insurance and plan accordingly. I see a lot of frustration here and can relate but what control do we have in the end?

Hope everyones' trip pans out ok!

We are planning to be on carnival vista 9/9, flying into Miami that morning. How soon would I know if cruise is cancelled or changed? This is my 4th cruise but never encountered this.

I'm fine with changing itinerary but the flight and missing ship worries me 😬

We also sail out of Miami 9/9 on the MSC Divina getting nervous by the new models! We fly in the 9th also. Thinking about leaving early and driving but not sure if that's a safe bet. Hate to get there and the ship can't return on time or is cancelled and I'm sitting in a danger zone! I know it's a little early but need to have a game plan. There are 12 of us traveling from all different areas.[emoji30]

Even if not a direct hit on Miami it's looking like it's going to be close enough to mess up flights.

We will ride out Irma at home, like every other hurricane. I'll have to have someone put my shutters up if it will, in fact, hit us. That's one heck of a project but oh well. South Florida isn't anywhere near as prone as New Orleans or Houston to flooding, so I'm not terribly worried. Plenty of water, fuel, generators, food, etc. etc. More of an inconvenience than anything.

I hope RCI is better prepared this time around to cancel cruises out of South Florida and give travelers plenty of notice. I think around Thursday will be decision time. Let's see.

We're supposed to be on the Oasis on 9/10, just like so many of you on this board. I definitely don't like the updated models showing it hitting south FL. We live in Tampa, so our primary concern is leaving our two dogs here while we go on the cruise. We have a trusted pet sitter who will be staying with our dogs, but we would not have any fun on the cruise if we are worrying that Irma might hit Tampa. I feel bad for those who are supposed to be flying in from out of state. If the cruise is cancelled at the last minute we just turn around and drive the 2 hours home, but those flying in would be stuck in FL, possibly without a place to stay. I know we'll find out more info in the coming days. Hopefully the cruise lines will announce things in advance so we can all change our plans if necessary. Everyone stay safe.

We are on Oasis Sept 10 also flying in the 9th. If you have a twitter account you can follow James Van Fleet. He is RCI meteorologist and is giving real time info. He is saying a decision should be made in the next day or two. 🤞🏻🙏🏻

Someone posted that he had said that the OA would possibly be leaving from another port, however, they left out the important part - IF PC IS CLOSED:)

Tampa could still get a direct hit. Nothing is out of the cone at the moment. If it stays south and moves a bit further west it could curve up right into Tampa. At the moment, just too hard to predict anything. Just be prepared for the worst, I guess.

Oasis 9/10. Not looking great . Wonder if RCI will cancel. Trying to decide if we should prep the house for Irma or wait a few days.

RCI cancelled the Liberty cruise last week on the day she was scheduled to depart from Galveston.

The latest report from the National Hurricane Center (11am) shows a more sourthernly path than the last couple of reports.

It's a good trend for us so far. Keeps getting pushed more south with the potential curve pushed more and more west. Could end up really, really bad for the Tampa area or even panhandle.

Irma might make it into the Gulf! The Atlantic high ridge must be getting stronger, as they said it might.

I really wanna have this cruise happen. Unfortunately, the "I" storms are living up to their legacy :(

As for Allure, she is scheduled to be in Labadee on Friday. That might not happen now. If Irma fallows the path of these new models Allure may try to go around the storm instead. I hope she makes it back to port on Sunday for our cruise.

Sunday would be day of impact for South Florida if this storm curves up as expected. You may get lucky, but I'd start mentally preparing for a Sunday cruise to not happen this time. Hope for the best, though.

So far it looks like the Dream will be soiling with a flip flop of schedule. Castaway Cay change up with Nassau. We have an at sea day Thursday 9/7 and are scheduled to be in port Canaveral 9/8 am. May be making a beeline for Tampa to board up the house. Hope not.

We were on the Sky doing the 3-night Bahamas cruise when Sandy went through the Bahamas (before it devastated the NY area). We sailed and went out into the channel and rode it out for that Saturday in 30+ foot seas. Fortunately it was quickly through there and not quite a strong as Irma. Empties I've ever seen a dining room or casino (and only real time my daughter was seasick). So be prepared.

Where in FLL are you? I'm in Weston, and we're in the same boat as you. Unfortunately just came down with gout, so putting shutters up is going to be a chore, might need to find someone as well (especially as our house as 2 floors). Agreed, at least we're not prone to flooding, and we're not in a flooding zone (though I do have flood insurance anyway, it's cheap enough not to have it while in Florida). We could end up with 10 people and 4 dogs at our house though, as my inlaws (parents and sister w/kids) are on Marco, near the water. At least we're 15+ miles inland.

We are on Oasis until the 10th. Of course, we don't have any information on the ship. The only information I get is the Internet or what I read on cruise critic.

What are the rumors about a Sunday return to port Canaveral?

Thanks. M

Ps- gorgeous weather today (Monday) and calm seas

M
