cruiseequalsfun Posted December 6, 2017 #1 Share Posted December 6, 2017 Hi. Hoping for some help! I booked a GTY balcony on Jewel of the Seas for Spring 2018 in the Southern Caribbean. It looks like my room has been assigned! 8024. I believe that is E2!? How does that rate? It is in the front of the ship. I see that in the front of the ship on the other side is another room currently available in same category - 8538 (slightly closer to the middle and closer to the elevator - will I hear a lot more noise?). Also in the middle - 8590 (is that a hump? Does Jewel have a hump? is it too close to elevators for noise or centrum for noise?) Also in the back of the ship 8648 is available. Would you change rooms (assuming the availability remains the same!). If so why or why not? Is 8024 on the side that I'll get views of the port from the balcony? Last balcony we seemed to always see the sea and never the port. It would be nice to see the beautiful ports from the balcony! Thanks all!
Clarea Posted December 6, 2017 #2 Share Posted December 6, 2017 I would have no problem with 8024. It's not far from the forward stairs/elevators. The "best" side of the ship for port viewing varies, and is unpredictable.
Ashland Posted December 6, 2017 #3 Share Posted December 6, 2017 (edited) I've sailed this class of ship several times...so just my personal opinion: #8024 = much to far forward regardless of it being a portside. #8538 = a connecting cabin (no way would I ever recommend one) #8590 = yes, a hump....small balcony (if you don't mind) but great midship location. #8648 = really far aft (I only like the true afts which makes the walk worth it) Given those options I would go with #8590 and continue looking since it's possible something else might pop up before cruise date. If not I would be happy with this location. Edited December 6, 2017 by Ashland
robtulipe Posted December 6, 2017 #4 Share Posted December 6, 2017 (edited) I agree with Bob cabin 8024 is fine along with 8538. Noise shouldn't be a problem with the latter even though it is close to the forward elevator/stairs area and is a connecting cabin. We've had connecting cabins on this class and didn't feel they were noisier. Cabin 8590 is on the hump but it has a very small triangular balcony about 2/3 the size of a regular balcony as show in the shot below of the balcony for 8600 which has the same size balcony. There has been complaints here on CC about the size of these hump balconies. Rear cabin 8648 balcony overlooks roof of the Safari Club, Game Reserve and Zanzibar Lounge as well as the lifeboat canopy as shown in the second shot below and is somewhat of a walk from the centrum elevator/stair area. I would take the easy route and just stay with your current assigned cabin # 8024. Edited December 6, 2017 by robtulipe
reallyitsmema Posted December 6, 2017 #5 Share Posted December 6, 2017 I would stay with what you have. Definitely would not go with 8590, too much centrum noise and wouldn't want a smaller balcony.
Fun2snorkel Posted December 6, 2017 #6 Share Posted December 6, 2017 I think I would keep the one assigned but check regularly for a better one.

From what I've seen, looks like a nice central location and also a big balcony. Any opinions?

Rare island lady Posted December 6, 2017 #10 Share Posted December 6, 2017 That stateroom is too close to the centrum for me. Yikes...my upgraded cabin is 1050 on Jewel. Mistake? Could change to forward cabin about 6 from the forward elevators. Though for the rough seas in the southern Carib...I do like mid ship. Bucky gets very green...very easily.

Just a gut feeling, but I've always felt that Radiance class ships tend to have more motion in a given set of conditions than other RC classes. OntarioTraveller Posted December 6, 2017 #13 Share Posted December 6, 2017 A question for those who have cruised much more than I: Would you not rather be near the centre elevators rather than the front elevators for easy access to disembark at port and to the WJ? I love the centre glass elevators....but agree ideal to be a bit off centre to escape the noise.

I love the centre glass elevators.... On Voyager/Freedom/Oasis class ships, I don't mind being near the aft elevators, as there is no noise and/or cigarette smoke coming up that space. However, on Vision and Radiance class ships, they can have very loud music at the base of the Centrum, which I would like to avoid. Also, cigarette smoke from the casino can come up the centrum. Gut feeling....LOL...funny! ;) We were pretty far aft a couple of times doing the southern run in the past...but have since stayed more central with better results. I think they still have that door to the hallway from the Centrum area on that port side....will try to make sure it is closed at night I guess. Thanks Bob! From what I've seen, looks like a nice central location and also a big balcony. Any opinions? The possible noise from the Centrum has never been a concern...any entertainment in there (music) is usually over well before midnight. The balcony is a big one but I would actually opt for a few cabins in your category a bit more aft (like #1064 etc). Best of luck
steveru621 Posted December 6, 2017 #17 Share Posted December 6, 2017 We always choose a cabin forward of the forward elevators/stairs on any Radiance class ship. Never had a problem with motion. Elevators are less crowded. No noise, or issues with the Centrum. No lifeboat covers. 8024 would definitely be acceptable.

OntarioTraveller Posted December 7, 2017 #24 Share Posted December 7, 2017 This is valuable discussion for a relative newbie! I did change my close-to-centre 8578 (E2) to 1516 by the forward elevator on deck 10 as I think I will be happier in a quieter area and up high. Motion doesn’t usually bother us, actually I like it for rocking me to sleep! I appreciate all your opinions. Wow, still lots of cabins available for our April 1st sailing. Rare island lady Posted December 7, 2017 #25 Share Posted December 7, 2017 I also decided not to take the chance being too close to the Centrum. Sure, nice location to everything being in the middle, and less motion....but instead opted out from 1050 changing to 1534 on our upcoming Jewel trip.
