FSU Girl Posted December 30, 2017 #1 Share Posted December 30, 2017 So I haven’t been on a Princess cruise since I was a kids and my fiancé has never been. We are considering the British Isles cruise on the Crown Princess. I’m not sure what type of room we should book. It’s pretty port intensive, but we like to spend time in our cabin and would like for it to be nice. Should we go with just a balcony room? Are the perks of the mini suite or suite worth the higher cost?

Shaver John Posted December 30, 2017 #3 Share Posted December 30, 2017 Since this will be your one and only Honeymoon and if you can afford it the suite is the way to go. You get a lot of perks, dining is very special for breakfast and all other meals and well, you just get a little special treatment. Have a wonderful wedding and a long life together. Skai Posted December 30, 2017 #6 Share Posted December 30, 2017 Since, you're asking for opinions....I'd personally rather use the extra money that would be spent on a mini-suite/or full suite on fulfilling excursions on-shore, whether they're DIY or ship-sponsored(I prefer the latter). Or use that money for shipboard expenses, IE. speciality restaurants, bar bills, casino play or other onboard shopping etc. etc. etc. On a port intensive cruise, chances are that most of your in-cabin time will be spent sleeping, waking, getting freshened up/ready for a day in port, or doing the same after returning from port for dinner/evening activities and then retiring back to the cabin to sleep. Natural light is nice, having access to fresh air is also a plus. I would suggest that a balcony might suit your needs amply. The only advantage to a mini-suite would be a couch and a larger shower -- yes, both nicer to have than to not have. Unfortunately, one has to book a higher class of cabin on Princess to get these amenities that are often offered in a reg. balcony (and lesser class cabins) on other mainstream lines. (Beyond a little more room)The suite, gives one priority embarkation(which is a + if one is new to the Princess loyalty program),a handful of mini-liquor bottles/mixers and the option of dining for breakfast in one of the speciality restaurants. There are also upgraded bath amenities. For some, the extra cost might be a value to them for these extras. For me...Nope. Princess suite-perks aren't really as luxurious as what may be offered on other contemporary mainstream (or premium) lines.

(wine, Chef's Table, Ultimate Ships Tour) If you are up late dancing a late afternoon nap in a pitch black inside cabin before dinner makes it much easier to fall asleep. We had an inside cabin 46 years ago on my honeymoon and first cruise on the Home Lines Oceanic. Howard
Britter16 Posted December 30, 2017 #8 Share Posted December 30, 2017 I would get a Carib deck balcony, it’s bigger and half covered from the sun and rain. Dolphin deck mini suite balconies stick out and are completely exposed to weather and all balconies above you. With the money you save on a regular balcony you could enjoy the ultimate balcony dinner during a scenic sail away. Best wishes.
Rare geoherb Posted December 30, 2017 #9 Share Posted December 30, 2017 We did fine in an inside cabin on our British isles cruise earlier this year. It's such a port-intensive itinerary (plus chilly) that I did not miss having a balcony. It was a fourth anniversary cruise for us.

Dont expect to be using a balcony very much unless you are very lucky with the weather as it can be quite cold or windy here in the UK during the summer. Maybe consider an oceanview if you want some light, usually quite a bit cheaper. The mini suites have a sitting area and a larger bathroom and are very nice . We usually choose one now for the extra space. Sent from my SM-T580 using Forums mobile app
jasbo49 Posted December 30, 2017 #11 Share Posted December 30, 2017 It’s pretty port intensive, but we like to spend time in our cabin and would like for it to be nice. To me, this is the key point, and I think a mini-suite would be the perfect choice. If people like inside cabins, that's great for them, but I can't imagine anyone saying it's a great place to spend time. Even the balcony cabins on most Princess ships (including Crown) have a short-coming: no sofa. While the suites are fantastic, they are usually more than twice the cost of a mini. So I would chose the mini. It's quite a bit roomier than the balconies and has a full sofa and a tub. And since it's in the sometimes drizzly British Isles, I'd pick an Emerald deck mini (fully covered) over the Dolphin deck ones (fully exposed). Especially the part about spending time in the cabin. The sofa and extra room is nice and also the bathtub/shower over the ONE person small shower in balcony, OS, and inside cabins. And if CC isn't too much more pp per day, go with that. The mini suites on Deck 8 (Emerald) may be covered but they are way aft so there is that to consider. On Deck 9(Dolphin) you have more of a choice of the location you are interested in. In any case enjoy the cruise and the beginning of the next chapter of your lives! Liz54 Posted December 30, 2017 #13 Share Posted December 30, 2017 What about a Window Suite? Full Suite perks, but no balcony. However its very spacious and sometimes British Isles weather can be rainy, and cruise is port intensive. Ability to order in suite from full menu, free laundry, breakfast at Sabatini's...... shirazcruiser Posted December 30, 2017 #14 Share Posted December 30, 2017 We've sailed twice on Princess to the British Isles and found this itinerary to be the most exhausting of the many European sailings we've taken due to the long day excursions on this port intensive cruise. Since it is you're honeymoon, I personally would book at least a balcony or mini-suite. YouTube has videos of both a balcony and mini-suite on the Crown that will clearly show you the advantages of a mini-suite which has more space and a nicer bathroom (bathtub as opposed to the very small shower). Our first cruise was our honeymoon 25 years ago in an ocean view and slowly moved up to booking only full suites. I would have loved a mini-suite on my honeymoon. balcony - mini-suite

FSU Girl Posted December 30, 2017 Author #20 Share Posted December 30, 2017 Thanks everyone these suggestions are great! Is August a typical rainy time in the British Isles? I don’t mind the port intensiveness I actually prefer it. We’re on the fence with this or a Baltic cruise. Are there any perks with a mini suite, or is it just the bigger room? It looks like it’s $1,200 more if we did this over a regular balcony

shirazcruiser Posted December 30, 2017 #24 Share Posted December 30, 2017 Do a mock booking and you’ll see under mini-suites the CC rate and then 3 other lower rates for non-CC mini-suites based on ship location. All mini-suites are approx the same size. The specialty restaurants are more reasonably priced on Princess than RCCL and Celebrity@ approx $29 pp. Check the website for the menus for Crowne Grill and Sabatini’s. I would eat at both. Rare cr8tiv1 Posted December 30, 2017 #25 Share Posted December 30, 2017 Club Class comes with the highest mini rate (usually Premium mini). i have not been to Europe on a cruise and not sure how the dining room works with a port intensive cruise. Club Class dining was wonderful and any time really is any time. One of the best perks with a suite is that you can order from the main dining room and dine in your suite. If you chose a premium mini, ask for a META upgrade. For that matter, if you are in any category, request a META upgrade...not just an upgrade if you are happy with your cabin choice. If offered, you will be upgraded to the next stateroom level. Upgrade (free) or Upsell ($$$). I enjoy dining in the Crown Grill. Not so much Sabatini's/Share/Salty Dog. Enjoy your honeymoon. Enjoy your cruise.
