Opinions on casino

Hi all,

I'm seeking some input about your opinions of the casino. Is it worth trying? Do you feel the casino is lucky? Unlucky? How does it compare to land casinos? Do you prefer slots or table games?

Personally I am a casual player, meaning I won't spend more than $100 at the most when gambling. I have only been on one cruise before and did spend some time playing roulette, and blackjack. I did luck out and win $100 in blackjack and was satisfied with that. But I am on the fence about playing and if I should temp fate...

Any thoughts are appreciated :)

Odds and payouts are worse on cruise ships, i.e. Black Jack in Vegas pays 3 for 2 where as on the cruise it paid 6 for 5 dollar bet.

6 for 5 blackjack is pretty much everywhere, including Vegas. Some higher limit tables may have 3 for 2 payouts but 6 for 5 is becoming the norm.

On my last three day cruise the casino paid out more than $5000 to 38 players. The cage ran out of hundreds and my $1000 winnings were paid in a "Michigan bankroll" of twenties and fives.

I'd call that lucky.

The only way to really make money in a casino is to own it. That is why I have CCL shares in my portfolio.

My last cruise I hit $150 on a slot after three spins. This was right after the casino opened leaving port on the first day. I kept doing this and never had to add any money into my player’s account until day four. It was downhill from there. I did get my “Drinks on Us” by the 7th day...on a 8 day cruise.

We have been on ten Carnival cruises. We each take $100 per day for the casino. We have never won once.

On our first cruise, a couple that was in our group, the guy won $1200 on the first night of the cruise. On the last night, his wife won $1000 on the same machine.

We consider it as entertainment, not a get rich quick scheme.

it's funny no one posts about losing money, if everyone on CC wins what they say, the casinos would be broke (LOL)

That is because gamblers delude themselves into thinking they actually ever "win." If the honesty tallies all they have spent gambling vs all they have won they would realize it is a losing proposition.

Selective memory is a casino's best friend, that one "winning" day gets the gambler to return and donate their money to whomever owns the casino.

I play in the ship casinos most of the time they are open and have been rewarded a number of times with free bounce back cruises (just have to pay taxes/port charges) and low casino rates on other cruises (both on Carnival and Holland America). After 42 cruises, I don't go to the shows and I don't drink much so I don't go and sit in the bars (boring to me). On my last two cruises, I have brought home just about the same amount as I brought, so that was pretty lucky. That doesn't always happen, but going to the casinos is my entertainment and I budget around $200+ per day, which is what I also budget when going to land casinos. I don't think the ship casinos are any "tighter" than land casinos. If I don't win anything in $5, I move to another slot machine. If I'm winning on a slot, I stay. If I win double what I put in the slot, I take it out and move on. I look at gambling as entertainment and I enjoy it.

That's our philosophy as well (except for the drinking thing.)

We wouldn't cruise nearly as much if it weren't for the offers from the casino loyalty programs. My husband has been on ONE Carnival cruise, spent his normal amount of time in the casino and was recently called by CCL Casino host with new offers. It's not a place to "make money." It's a place to have fun, play games, relax and - for us - earn another cruise!

In terms of "tight" vs. "loose" - I've found that the ship casinos are a LITTLE tighter than the Vegas casinos. I think that's because there are just SO many casinos and slots in Vegas - all competing for your money. Only one casino on the ship - no competition. But I know that before I set foot in the casino and I only gamble money that I'm willing to lose.

So always remember there is no Gaming commision governing the ship Casinos. No minimum payback!

That right there is why I wouldn’t touch one of their slot machines. I know the slots in the U.S. are regulated and have to pay back a certain %...and it’s not a very high %. I bet it’s really bad on a ship.

I have posted plenty of times about losing money and I keep good notes about it. For me, gambling on a cruise is about entertainment and free cruises. To date as of 2010, I have lost $7,900 in Carnival's casino. In exchange, Carnival has given me free cruises. I have taken 13 free cruises, meaning I paid about $400 in taxes and fees for my wife and I to go on a 7 day cruise in any interior cabin on any deck. For some, I pay $600 extra to upgrade to any non-suite balcony on the ship. In 2017 alone, Carnival offered me my choice of 14 free cruises but my leave from work only allowed me to go on 5. I couldn't afford to take that many cruises paying over $2000 for each one, so losing money in the casino works out really well FOR ME. I can't speak to anyone else's reasons or experiences.

But, to the OPs original question. land casinos are better regulated and are required to post odds on games of chance. So, you will know how "tight" a slot machine is on land. Carnival isn't regulated like that and so can change the odds on their machines, and they won't tell you what those odds are at any time. They can't do that on table games. I will play table games, but not slots (although slot tournaments are viable), on a cruise ship.

My last cruise in November on The Sensation and I spent every night in the casino playing Blackjack. I wound up winning $200 for the 5 day cruise so I was very happy. Also this cruise only cost me $231 as it was a Casino Offer so I made out like a bandit. I hardly ever play the slot machines on cruises as they are so tight and not worth my time. I did once win $1000 playing BJ in one night a very long time ago so if the cards and your luck are with you then it can happen.
