tx121 Posted May 15, 2018 #1 Share Posted May 15, 2018 Are there any future plans for RCL to leave from Philadelphia? I remember there was once a ship that did embark there. I’m wondering why they decided to pull this port. Is it because Baltimore and Cape Liberty are close by?

Rare BillOh Posted May 15, 2018 #5 Share Posted May 15, 2018 Do you long timers remember what RCL ship may have left from here and when that was?
OfTheSeasCruiser Posted May 15, 2018 #6 Share Posted May 15, 2018 Not going to happen. Also, size restrictions are a major problem.

EpcotBill Posted May 15, 2018 #8 Share Posted May 15, 2018 Empress of the Seas was still sailing from Philly in August 2006.
davy jones Posted May 15, 2018 #9 Share Posted May 15, 2018 I would like to see it, but I don't think it's going to happen soon. Ship sizes would be limited by the Delaware Memorial Bridge clearance and the proximity to NYC area terminals makes would likely impact business there on the same itineraries. If for some reason the Baltimore arrangement ends, it would be possible though.
puggylicious Posted May 15, 2018 #10 Share Posted May 15, 2018 The Enchantment sailed out of Philadelphia after it was stretched. I was on that sailing. And I was twice on the Empress of the seas out of there. It was a great port with plenty of parking. I wish they would start sailing from there again. tx121 Posted May 15, 2018 Author #12 Share Posted May 15, 2018 My dream would be a Radiance class coming to Philly. Probably never going to happen but wishful thinking! Maybe when Radiance class is about to be scraped. Even then I don’t think it will happen! Lol!

Lady Hudson Posted May 15, 2018 #14 Share Posted May 15, 2018 I sailed on Celebrity Horizon out of Philly many years ago.
cole'snana Posted May 15, 2018 #15 Share Posted May 15, 2018 Sailed to Bermuda on the Celebrity Horizon out of Philadelphia in 2005 docking in St Georges. Remember it well because a hurricane was coming straight toward Bermuda. The captain took us down the coast, then out. The storm veered and did not hit. We got there a few hours late but had beautiful weather the whole time there.
chengkp75 Posted May 15, 2018 #16 Share Posted May 15, 2018 I would like to see it, but I don't think it's going to happen soon. Ship sizes would be limited by the Delaware Memorial Bridge clearance and the proximity to NYC area terminals makes would likely impact business there on the same itineraries. If for some reason the Baltimore arrangement ends, it would be possible though. Delaware Memorial bridge is 10 feet lower than the Key Bridge in Baltimore, so that severely limits the classes of ships. Also, just like Baltimore, given the 6-8 hour river transit that falls within the US ECA, requiring low sulfur fuel, only ships equipped with scrubbers would be based there (like Grandeur and Pride in Baltimore), and so the fuel cost becomes an issue. danp Posted May 16, 2018 #17 Share Posted May 16, 2018 We were on the Empress in 2001 when it docked in Phil..One of the problems was getting out bof the port.while we waited for a cab in the pouring rain, only one cab showed up in a half hour.Trere was a started there and all she could do was keep getting on her radio and telling cab to come to the port. And another problem was the porter came up and told the starter that they get the next cab and by then there were about fourty people waiting in line and we all yelled NO WAY,with that the starter called for the police. We won
ObstructedView2 Posted May 16, 2018 #18 Share Posted May 16, 2018 No future plans for the Philly cruise port. Baltimore, Bayonne, N.J., and New York have become much more competitive, increasing the number of cruises they offer. Also mega-ships cannot get under the Delaware Memorial Bridge. And, also to consider is that the Philly port is 100 miles up the Delaware River & now it's a longer wait time for cruise ships to get to international waters so they can open up their casino's for gambling & open the shops.
cot427 Posted May 16, 2018 #19 Share Posted May 16, 2018 And just think that the port facility hasn't been used or updated for some time...they would have to consider that added cost, on top of everything else: smaller ships to fit under the bridge, longer wait time for international waters and the fact that Bayonne is just over an hour and a half drive from Philly. Definitely don't see Philadelphia being used as a port anytime soon.
Merion_Mom Posted May 16, 2018 #20 Share Posted May 16, 2018 Once Maryland decided to put a lot of money into the port in Baltimore, Philadelphia didn't stand a chance. If you look at the spacing along the east coast, Bayonne and Baltimore basically "cover" the whole drive-to population.
