CLQ919 Posted June 3, 2018 #1 Share Posted June 3, 2018 Planning our cruise on NCL Escape this August. Sadly, my husband will not be able to go this year due to his grad school requirements. Traveling with my teenage son, and if it is anything like our last cruise, I will barely see him. I was wondering, is it easy to meet other people to hang out with occasionally (not every second)? I love to read, but would be nice to have another person to talk with or grab drinks or do activities. I have asked several friends but our schedules didn't work out. Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you.
Rare KeithJenner Posted June 3, 2018 #2 Share Posted June 3, 2018 Even though you are travelling with your son, there is nothing to stop you from attending the solos get togethers. At these, meals and other events are arranged so you will be able to go to them. You should find people there who you will be able to socialise with as and when (and as much or as little as you want). As the Escape has studio cabins there should be a decent number of solos onboard. Check the freestyle daily for meeting times. In case you are concerned, it is very much “solos”, not “singles” Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Son of a son of a ... Posted June 3, 2018 #7 Share Posted June 3, 2018 As others suggested ... M&G. On another cruise line (and years ago) we really enjoyed being seated at a table of eight and meeting our shipmates. We would show up as a party of two and be seated to round out an eight-top. Many wonderful stories told, drinks shared, and friends made. Getting a private table required a visit with the matra de and perhaps a tip or special occasion. Nowadays, people want to eat in small groups and the cruise lines have catered with regular seating for smaller tables. We like it sometimes, but also miss the old times of sitting down and eating dinner with complete strangers. :)
Budget Queen Posted June 3, 2018 #8 Share Posted June 3, 2018 Sure you can find other people to talk to. But I wouldn't expect much else. Maybe, you will be able to join others, in the act ivies you list with other, but chance you won't. As mentioned, NCL does have a nightly gathering of solos, that is listed in the daily planner. I never look for "friends", since it's likely to be only surface. But does offer other people to chat with.
DMH15 Posted June 3, 2018 #9 Share Posted June 3, 2018 I met and became friends with others playing team trivia. We still keep in touch. Also keep in touch with folks met on roll call/m & g. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Thank you. the two ways that come to mind for me; join the solo meetings or at least the first one and join the roll call: take part in the M&G. both ways should make it easy to meet others and find people to talk to or, as you mentioned have a drink with.oh someone just mentioned Trivia, that is a great idea. We have met life long friends through M&Gs and people we have met there, especially if you not only attend the M&G but take part in conversations with the group here on CC before sailing. poohdreaming Posted June 5, 2018 #12 Share Posted June 5, 2018 Definitely attend the Meet & Greet - sign up on your roll call. And then the 2nd option is to attend solos meetings listed on the daily freestyle newsletter. On the Breakaway, it was in the studio lounge. Had a wonderful host and the studio lounge was the right place for these meetings. You do not need to attend every nights/solo meetings. Inside the studio lounge - the host had some sign up sheets - to see show together or to have dinner together with the host. At the meeting, the host would ask how many people would like to have dinner together and at which restaurant. (Taste/Savor/MDR) The host then would need to call to reserve and then no need to wait when everyone get together at the restaurant. Every hosts do their solo meetings differently. But I had fun in the first one compared to the second one on the Gem because on the Gem, they do not have the studio lounge or a good place for solos. Something fun! Posted June 5, 2018 #13 Share Posted June 5, 2018 I have noticed (and chatted with) solos at different events and on excursions. Like you, they are not on the ship solo, however they show up by themselves for all different reasons (the others in their party have no interest, conflicting interests, or are unable to participate). You will run into them over and over again. You will have a great time!
monl765 Posted June 6, 2018 #14 Share Posted June 6, 2018 Meeting people is not a problem. Go to a trivia game, or a name that tune game. Or, as I told my friend on his first cruise, go to a bar and sit down. Look left, then right and it is a 50:50 chance they will talk to you before you talk to them. Everyone on a cruise is looking to have fun.
