When we sailed on the Sunshine last Christmas the Roll Call was having a gift exchange and I brought the stationary gift and someone grabbed it right away. I wasn't impressed but they sure were. Go figure!

Who would have thought. The very nice wooden box it came in was the best part of the gift.:)

I get free limited Internet time on a usually crappy system on Princess.

Makes me wonder if any ship gets great internet service . but I really don't read a lot of raves about it in these reviews ;)

What does Princess do?

No gift but we do get free internet minutes, faster than it used speed comparable to Carnival's. They are talking about a new system that is fsster.

No free laundry until 150 days. OK platinum/elite welcome party which is nice. Free wine paring event.

Best feature is free bar setup some number of small bottles of licquor and sodas. Can trade them in for two free coffee cards (15 specialty coffees each)

Looking forward to becoming elite in just over a year.

Princess would not be our preferred loyalty program because it takes 150 days to get the laundry perk. Which, when traveling is the best perk to us. Also, because they have so many Elite (longer cruises generally so many accrue quickly), many Princess passengers report that it takes 2-3 days to get laundry back...not there yet, so no personal experience.

Could care less about the internet minutes - the LAST thing I want to do on vacation is turn on my phone and look at my email.

If I remember correctly from your previous posts you have only done a couple of Carnival cruises.

We have done over 30 with Carnival (and have seen lots of changes both good and some not so good) and the platinum gift is something they promised loyal customers quite a few years ago to encourage us frequent cruisers to keep coming back.

Really do not understand why you have belittle those of us who make a suggestion they should allow us to pick from a list of gifts so as to get more value from their gift.

This is cruise critic and I come here to comment on both the good and the bad that Carnival does. If you consider this whining oh well I will continue to post as I have been doing. . .

12 cruises completed with Carnival (78 nights - Platinum) with 4 more booked in the next 15 months. Just a couple more than a couple, IMO. And as a Platinum member, I still wish they would just get rid of the program so people would stop bitching about what they did or didn't get. I pay for a cruise and I get exactly that.

Also have 4xNCL, 3xRCCL, 1xPrincess, 1xHAL, and 1xUSS Abraham Lincoln Tiger cruises under my belt for a total of 22 cruises completed with 7 booked (the other 3 booked are 2xRCCL and 1xNCL). Not up to your 30 cruises yet but I'm working hard to get there. ;)

Let me ask you something. When (not if) your grandmother gave you a Christmas or Birthday gift that you didn't like, did you complain to her if you could get something else instead? It's really that simple. You say thank you for a gift that doesn't have to be given and move on in life.

As you say, this is Cruise Critic. That includes being critical of cruisers who advocate doing the wrong thing as well as cruise lines who do the wrong thing.

OK you are an avid cruiser.

When a friend or relative gave me or my kids a gift of course we said thank you. And from time to time we found out where the gift came from and exchanged it for something we could get use out of.

BTW when we went to guest services to see if we could exchanged it we did it very politely and when they said nothing to be had we said thanks and typically found someone to give it to.

I hopefully didn't imply that you were anything other than respectful when talking with GS about swapping. I just personally wouldn't even ask to begin with because asking Carnival to swap it is like asking Grandma to swap it......a huge no-no, IMO. I fully believe that is what other cruisers who receive gifts should do as well, say thank you and move along. Not ask for a choice, not ask for OBC, not write to John complaining about the gift......all of those things are rude IMO and would be like asking Grandma to get you something different because you don't like what she picked out for you. She doesn't have to get you a gift and neither does Carnival.

Guess we are going to have to agree to disagree on this.

Do not have the same relationship with grandma as we do with a huge faceless corporation who doesnt exactly always have your best interests at heart. I see no reason not to march up to GS and respectfully ask if they have a substitute.

Two more things they offer

When you get somewhere over Elite you get obc for being very good customer. Not a lot but 25-50 or so.

The 40 most traveled passengers get a special luncheon with senior officers. Kind of like diamond luncheon on CCL.

Thinking about it perks are somewhat better on Princess. However the biggest reason we changed is we want to see the world and really cannot do that on CCL.

And no one is stopping you fro going to GS. I simply think it is wrong and explaining why it is wrong, IMO. And I have yet to see a corporation that has actually been faceless. Every time I walk up to GS I see faces. And I try to treat others as I would treat Grandma until they no longer deserve such treatment.

Carnival Corp has signed on for the "new" system which will be fleet wide across brands. It isn't just Princess.

I 100% agree with you. I appreciate the thought of the gift sometimes more than the gift itself. I would never consider asking for an exchange.

As someone who worked as a Purser (officers back then - Guest Services now) on a cruise ship that had lots of problems, I had to deal with people complaining all day long - sometimes legitimately (it was a ship with issues - Paquet Cruise Lines, the Rhapsody) - but the majority of the time over minor issues. I certainly would have put the "I don't like this gift - can I get something else" as minor.

I've been Platinum for quite awhile, and I still appreciate the perks - the free gift is just one of them. Nice thought, not life changing.

Or not! We have quite a few more days under Platinum, and there's just so many Carnival Head Phones you'll need, so there's nothing wrong with asking Guest Services if they can exchange, sometimes they can, our last cruise we got a pair of night lites instead of the head phones!

Other gifts we've received such as candy, champagne, etc., from b2b's, casino, usually end up in re-gifting to our steward, our dining room staff, etc., to save packing spaace!
