Kids Behavior

Recommended Posts

I've never seen problem kids on a cruise (Royal or Disney), but the problem is the parents. I have an 11yo and a 15yo. I've encountered many parents lately who let their kids do whatever they want. Many kids today are spoiled brats who are unsupervised by their parents. That's just my experience.

Strange as it may seem .... Disney Cruises are extremely good about "child control".

Children are absolutely not allowed in "Adult Areas" ... strictly enforced.

So not true in my experiences; children in the adults area with nothing said by crew on Disney cruise ship.

You just never know.

The only cruise line I have heard and seen take care of unruly child problems is Princess. It was announced during the muster drill about the curfew and that the adults traveling with the unruly children will be responsible for those children. I saw it reinforced often. Maybe this is unusual.

Safe sailing!

What have some of you witnessed that leads to statements like "people injured", "entire vacations ruined", "brats", "parents who let their kids do whatever they want"?

I've seen kids run, seen them jump down stairs, seen them leave messes, seen them take too much food, seen them sitting on the stairs in groups. None of that comes close to the strong statements some people are making. I simply: hope hey fall, sit somewhere else, ask if there are more cookies, and walk around them.

For what it's worth, I've seen adults do all these same things.

I'm curious if I simply don't care about the behavior, or if some people have routinely witnessed things worthy of this rhetoric?

Kids are fine however running like crazy through hallways smashing into people, jumping on elevators hitting all them floor buttons and the jumping off, blocking stairs and refusing to move, telling adults to "f" off etc. is not ok - and yes I have seen all these things and worse on cruise ships.

Exactly why I take longer cruises in October. Most children are in school. Don't get me wrong, I've raised 2 children and have 2 grandchildren. I LOVE kids! What I don't like is parents who refuse to control their kids. A couple of years ago on a cruise, I called security because a boy approximately 7 or 8 was banging on his cabin door for the people inside to let him in. I tried to help him but he insisted he just forgot his room card. Then when I would go back into my cabin, he would begin banging and yelling for them to please let him in. I finally called security. They came and what happened I don't know. In my opinion that was bad parents or adults, not a bad kid! But I sympathize with the OP.

I'm talking about people being hurt, entire vacations ruined because parents refuse to control their kids. Complete brushing off of nearly all rules. And the staff will simply not do anything about it.

So my question is simple; does the staff on this line hold parents accountablefor monitoring and controlling their kids or not?

I've never seen anyone get hurt by a kid. I don't think your vacation could be ruined by small events or details related with kids.

However, about your question about the staff related with misbehaving unsupervised children, I was on Harmony a few weeks ago. OnGrease show you are supposed to have a reservation, that means that the kids inside should be with their parents. There were like 5 kids in the front row throwing popcorn to each other... Ok, that is a normal behavior for a kid, but when they ran out of popcorn the started to throw their beverages each other spilling all over the chairs, other passengers and the floor.

At this point I was expecting a parent to show up and put some order. Nothing happened, not even a RC staff did anything, they kept screaming, running, and hassling each other and other passengers until they got bored (obviously) and got out.

So from my point of view the answer would be NO.

For some reason the stairways have become a popular area for people to congregate. I have seen kids sliding on and hanging from the railings. Sitting on stairway carpet is nasty enough. Blocking a stairway or doorway is a safety hazard that everyone needs to be concious of. We always take the stairs to make up for all of the extra vacation calories. If it is bad enough I might say something beyond “excuse” me. If you cruise enough you will experience some of this. We agree - cruise during the school year!

On my one and only Carnival cruise, my 2 year old was run over by an older child running through the dining room. I was shoved in the buffet line several times. On one Royal cruise, a parent was showing his kid how to push all the buttons in the elevator when I stepped on. On a different Royal cruise, my daughter was called a racial epithet. That got security at my door shortly after I complained at the front desk.

On HAL, Princess and Disney, I've never seen anything like that. Disney had screaming children in the dining room though. HAL is now my favorite line. A very large number of kids on HAL is 300 out of 2000 total passengers.

Best to cruise at the times of the year and on longer cruises when less children will be cruising. ;)

I only cruise during the school year, and my last few cruises have been 23-8-18 days. Doesn't make a difference.

Curfew is 1:00 a.m. for kids not with their parents/guardians. I believe it's for under 18. Security will definitely break up any groups of kids and will escort back to their cabin.

Wow, see Carnival doesn't have one at all, and if they did they would never enforce it.

Thank you for the examples. It does help (me at least) to get a better handle on what we are talking about. EVERYONE is entitled to their feelings, and you DO NOT have to feel like I do. The reason I may not see this stuff as a problem is that, my wife is right, I do not pay attention to my surroundings and I am an over communicator. Much of what you all describe wouldn't even register to me. The things that do bother me I confront. Perhaps another point is that my wife is a teacher and I have coached High School Baseball for 15 years, so we are both comfortable dealing with other peoples kids, and maybe conditioned to ignore a lot. We're not afraid to talk to kids. We don't touch them or raise our voices, we don't correct them, we simply tell them what we want. 90% of the time they do what you ask. "Hey, stop running please" works very well for us.

boulders, I am so sorry to hear about your daughter's situation. That is the one thing I read that if I witnessed it would cause me to react in anger. That is beyond simple kid stuff.

I have never sailed RCI, but I have an honest question. I have been cruising for a long, long time on another cruise line but I am thinking of switching. The reason is simple, the unsupervised kids are completely out of control on the cruise ships and staffs REFUSE to do anything about it.

I'm not exaggerating and I am not just someone that bitches about families with kids. I'm talking about people being hurt, entire vacations ruined because parents refuse to control their kids. Complete brushing off of nearly all rules. And the staff will simply not do anything about it.

So my question is simple; does the staff on this line hold parents accountable for monitoring and controlling their kids or not? I never thought I would actually leave the cruise line that I have always used, but things get worse every time I sail and I have had it. I don't want to stop cruising, but I am looking for a line that actually holds parents accountable for the behavior of their kids when it gets out of hand.

The last couple of cruises I have taken on RCCL I have not had any problems with the kids because of the kids program.

Don’t you think your real issue is with the lack of parental supervision, and the pawning off of responsibilities to strangers?

Unfortunately, we live in a society here in the USA that permits their “little angels” to frolic around like uncaged baboons, and they are Ok with that. As long as this mindset exists, you will run into this problem on any line you go on.

There is something to that, although there are many well behaved children that are just not noticed. Another part of that same culture, however, is the need to continually express outrage over the behaviors of others, and to them, the internet and Cruise Critic has been a godsend.

We’ve only sailed one very family oriented cruise line and never seen problems...honestly, have only seen the reverse a few times-parents who have lost their temper/rage on their kids....so much so that I was afraid to step in. I have NO problem going up to Kids throwing popcorn and asking them to stop. Some kids are left unattended often in these settings, I don’t mind stepping in with a gentle correction.

I’ve sailed a lot with my kids on various cruise lines. Mostly Royal though. I can tell you the shorter cruises (3-5) nights are far worse than longer cruises. Holiday cruises are awful plus you pay extra! My kids are no saints but they know I don’t deal with poor behavior, so they tend to be much better behaved than other kids. I’m a mean mom! Tooting my own horn-I’ve had several strangers comment and thank us in public for the kids behaving so well.

All that aside- I’ve seen more poorly behaved ADULTS than I’ve seen children. It could be my perspective as I typically do adult things while my children are playing at the kids club. Sure I’ve seen a few teenage jerks who push the elevator closed button while I’m walking up to it, or unattended kids running through the windjammer. I’ve seen this outside of the cruise too. Misbehaved kids and bad parenting doesn’t magically disappear once you’re on board. You’re sharing a large ship with other people and there is bound to be announces. Take it in stride and don’t let it ruin your vacation.

I find it just as annoying when I see older, likely retired adults, roll their eyes at me when my family takes a table near them. They are prejudging my kids and us as parents. It’s always helpful to step into another’s shoes to understand their perspective. We should all try to be kind to one another.
