The trouble is one doesn't know what to believe because the HAL website information re: 'Smoking' has errors they can't be bothered to amend or update.

I don't suppose that there's any firsthand info about recent experiences in the Rotterdam casino - with regard to smoking? Fingers crossed for November !

If I hold my breath long enough, they'll eventually wake up and smell the coffee...

I will check today.

Makes no sense to ban cigars and pipes in outdoor smoking sections.  Even tho the smell of a cigar is pleasant to NOBODY, there's no reason to ban them outdoors.

You shouldn't make such a broad statement (No One), cigar smokers do enjoy the smell, and my wife enjoys the smell of my cigars even though she doesn't smoke at all.

And to be clear, I would rather smell a pipe or cigar than cigarettes.

We were on board Rotterdam in November - there was plenty of cigar smoking in the designated area.  They were enforcing the limits of the area (i.e. only under the covered area of the deck).

There was even a guy with a 2 foot high Hookah there.

Me too - cigarettes might as well be a burning house. At least pipes/cigar have an element of aroma to them.

🤷‍♀️. I would hope someone who has real life experience might chime in.  I am not a smoker just simply curious.

A little late to the party, but I will chime in. I am an ex smoker who was able to quit do to vapes. I ignore the FAQ's, and go by the contract. Many FAQ's relegate vapes to the smoking areas, whereas the contract will allow it in the cabins. I have never had an issue using vapes in a cabin when the contract allowed it. And in the contracts on various lines that do prohibit vaping in the cabins, they list cleaning fines for smoking, not vaping (nothing to clean from a vape, no lingering smells). I have no desire to ever try and see if a vape will set off the optical part of the in cabin smoke detector, vape clouds are actually cool, not hot, so no chance of setting off due to heat. I doubt cruise lines would ever go to fine particle detectors, as steam and perfume aerosols would constantly be setting those off. In reality, one could always vape in the cabin bathroom with the fan on and no one could ever tell.

The contracts do not differentiate between various types of vapes, just calling them E-cigs. There really is a quite a difference in the many devices out there, with what I refer to as vapes capable of producing large clouds of vapor, vs smaller e-cigs or disposables that produce little to no exhaled vapor. With some of the low flow devices out there today, holdings ones breath for a few seconds after inhaling will produce no vapor cloud at all. It is very possible to use a low flow device in any cruise cabin and never have an issue. Personally I use the low flow disposables when I travel now, although I may use my larger device in the smoking section.

There is a very interesting divide in the use of E-cigs as a smoking cessation device between the Americas (some south and central American countries actually ban e-cigs where smoking is allowed) and Europe. The Americas tend to have the opinion that it looks like smoking, therefore it must be bad, and will ignore any reputable studies that say otherwise in favor of trash publications that make it look bad, and vaping has never helped anyone quit smoking. Europe tends to acknowledge that there is a huge difference in the harm between smoking and vaping, and that is is a very effective smoking cessation tool. The disparity between the American health system outlook and England's health system outlook are polar opposites. Besides myself, I know of at least 4 other people who have used e-cigs to stop smoking, but I realize my personal experiences don't count as evidence:)

Well said, and I agree with all of your post.

You may now claim 6 people.  My wife and myself.  10 years this past monday.

I think the 'American' lines are afraid of the potential lawsuit when someone (like the woman who claims to be allergic to purified water - she can only drink spring water 🤣) sees someone (downwind) smoking/vaping, goes into psychosomatic anaphylactic shock and dies.

HAL Noordam: smoking areas - 1

Costa Toscana: smoking areas - 1,717

EXACTLY!  I hope that people soon tire of complaining about smoking and move on to another topic ... any topic.  If you don't like someone smoking, walk away.  No need to make a fuss.

How does the Costa Concordia compare to the Noordam?   I'd be happy if my cruise line doesn't follow any lead from Costa.

Vaping is mainly used for pot smoking E cigs for the nicotine replacement as well. Its a way for kids to smoke pot and their parents think they are smoking cigs.

😂that must be a great relief to parent thinking their kids are “only” smoking cigarettes.

this is not an American versus non American issue.  HAL, officially out of Seattle Washington, USA allows vaping in their cabins.  My question was to determine if the crew actually understood that and did indeed not harass those who vape, no judgement on anyone’s habits.

That would be an extremely ignorant parent. The difference is blatantly obvious. Not the least of which is the silly, stoned grin on their faces.

That's not what I see on HAL's website.

I was sent to the cruise contract which did indeed say it is allowed. That is why I asked for direct, personal experiences.

Cruise Contract (U.S.) https://www.hollandamerica.com/en/us/legal-privacy/cruise-contract -

The use of electronic cigarettes, personal vaporizers, or electronic nicotine delivery systems is allowed within the confines of the Guest's stateroom (balcony not included) and within designated smoking areas only.

This Cruise Contract constitutes the entire understanding and agreement between You and Holland America Line N.V., the operator of the vessel , as applicable to Your Cruise, Cruisetour, Land Trip or Air Package ("Carrier"), and supersedes any other prior oral, implied, written or other representations or agreements between You and Carrier, except that in the event of a direct conflict between a provision of this Cruise Contract and a provision of the Cruise Industry Passenger Bill of Rights (PBOR) in effect at the time of booking, the PBOR controls.

Smoking Policy https://www.hollandamerica.com/en/us/plan-a-cruise/get-ready-for-your-cruise/faq -

All Holland America Line's public areas, staterooms, suites, and verandahs are non-smoking* areas with the exception of designated smoking areas and casinos on select ships.

*Smoking (including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, vaping devices, and e-cigarettes) is only permitted in designated smoking areas.

Designated Smoking Areas

Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Oosterdam, Westerdam, Zuiderdam

Sea View Bar area*

Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam, Rotterdam, Zaandam

Sea View Bar area*

Casino-smoking is allowed in designated areas for active players and only when outside of 12 nautical miles from the Netherlands

Volendam

Sea View Bar area*

Sports Deck, outside Crow's Nest

Casino-smoking is allowed in designated areas for active players an only when outside of 12 nautical miles from the Netherlands

*In the Sea View bar area, the smoking section should be away from the bar and any outdoor dining. Onboard management has the flexibility to designate specific areas (port/starboard) adjacent to the Sea View bar. Visible signage must be placed in the smoking area. Please comply with ship signage.

Holland America Line reserves the right at any time to modify the smoking policy onboard or alter the locations where smoking is permissible.

While the Smoking Policy implies you cannot 'vape' in your stateroom, the Cruise Contract states you can. 🤣😂🤣

Knowing HAL, this contradicting information doesn't surprise me. 🫤

Unlikely. If your son had a way to vape pot with zero odor, he would be a billionaire.
