Another Edge pricing thread

Yep, it's yet another Edge pricing thread...

I'm just browsing X cruises as I'm probably going to book one later today and I came across this :-

edge2.jpg

Edge sets sail from Rome in just five days time. Yet according to Celebrity UK it currently has 34 sky suites available to book including 32 x SS1 and 2 x SS2 staterooms. It also has 13 available Aquaclass rooms  including 11 x A1 and 2 x A2 staterooms. Considering their move up program has been adopted by Celebrity UK now I find this surprising.

Across the insides, the ocean views and other balcony cabins Celebrity UK is showing an additional 173 cabins available to book for a total of an apparent 220 empty staterooms. You can all verify this by performing a dummy booking on the UK site.

I read on here all the time that X ships are sailing full. Well Edge certainly isn't... It kind of proves that Edge pricing is artificially inflated and that RCL prefer to sail with empty cabins rather than drop their prices.

Really interesting let us know if you can book those cabins.  Good Luck

I'm looking at a different ship. However all are available to book right now.

This is further indication that this ship is an overpriced Edsel.

The other ships mostly do sail full.

Yes - doing a comparison with Connie - which is doing a 9 day cruise in a similar area on the 19th June, it (she?) is showing a 2C guarantee cabin and one Aqua class cabin as being available. Everything else is sold out.

They certainly do. I've looked at many itineraries where all suites have sold months before sailing date and so was surprised to see so many available on this sailing and very surprised to see an apparent 220 staterooms empty with just 5 days to go before sail date.

Wow I wonder if anybody on this cruise has tried to upgrade to a sky suite and what that would cost?

I don't have time to count cabins, but the next Edge sailing after the one detailed in the opening post sailing on June 22nd from Barcelona has a total of 36 SS1, SS2 and CS suites showing as empty and a total of 31 empty Aqua Class staterooms too.

That's an interesting question. I assumed the Move Up program was implemented to squeeze additional dollars from those already booked, but clearly it's not working too well on these sailings. On the June 22ND sailing the AQ and Suite sales look very poor.

There are 146 Sky Suites on Edge, so one in four remain unsold.

There are 106 Aqua Class rooms, so thirty percent of these remain unsold also.

I don't think this is how LLP will have imagined sales a year ago.

We are on Constellation in mid-July for a 10-night Med cruise.  Ship has been fully sold out for a couple of weeks.  Edge is doing 7-day itineraries around the same time with many of the same ports (not all of course).  Excellent availability in all classes of cabin.

Realize it's a bit like comparing apples & oranges (different length cruises and somewhat different itineraries) but sill illustrative.  They are asking $34,000 pp for an Iconic suite.  Seriously?  Not only is it the price of a very nice, new car that you could keep for yours BUT you can go on a true luxury line (Crystal, Silversea, Regent) for a lot less and get a lot more for your money.

X obviously has a strategy with Edge -- only time will tell if it works.

Did anyone notice that the IVs were priced the same as the oceanviews?

Yes. There are a number of cruises showing an offer on the Celebrity UK site (Probably in other countries too, I've not looked) where you can book a verandah for the same price as an OV.

Some might say that an IV is an OV, so it all makes sense.... lol

The July 6th and 13th Edge sailings have similar huge numbers of staterooms left. I’m in Aqua for the first cruise and to upgrade to a sky suite would be a minimum bid of £800 each. Normal balcony for the second week - £60pp for an IV - I’ll stay where I am!

Good grief, that’s a real drop in pricing 😆. Practically giving them away - except obviously for all the free casino IVs they’ve handed out :classic_biggrin:.

I probably didn’t make it clear but that would be the price to upgrade from what I’ve already paid!

I'm thinking VillaUK may have posted that tongue in cheek. ;)

I’m hoping so but thought I better clarify in case! It’s been one of those days on another site where people read something entirely different to what was written!

To be honest the price changes are crazy on the Edge at the moment!

You are correct 👍, hence my 😆. Still, nothing would surprise me as X appear to be trying desperately to fill those IVs.

Should we pick a future Edge sailing and play a game?

How many empty state rooms will she have 3 days before sail date?

The Edge sailing in 4 days from now appears to be sailing with one in seven beds empty! Seriously, take a look yourself and do the maths.... Still, service should be exceptional for those onboard with such low passenger numbers!

If the Edge does indeed sail with multiple empty cabins, this will impact the pool of funds from passenger gratuities.  Unless Celebrity makes up the difference, service workers will be paid less than their normal share.  Yes, they will have fewer passengers to service, but I think their motivation leans towards a better payday. This would cause morale issues as the crew scrambles to transfer to other ships.  This is the reason for those "fireside" sales that ensures all cabins are full.

This system insures that even if Celebrity makes less on a particular cruise, at least the service workers will be paid at the usual rate.

Interesting strategy on Celebrity's part, but I'm not sure it is sustainable.

It certainly is interesting but I'm not seeing any ' fireside' sales for Edge sailings at this time. I suspect the inflated prices will cover the costs of the empty staterooms for now.

It looks like my cruise will sail mostly full (Sept. 9). They have not really dropped the price and oceanviews are still going for over 1k more than we paid (per person). Today is final payment, and generally looking, there are a small handful of IV's left. Though I haven't checked today, in the past, I have only seen a few concierge and above rooms. Inside cabins have been sold out for several months.

The September 20th sailing is wide open and about half the cost of yours.    They are showing all categories including all categories of suites being available.
