Alaskan Cruise on Carnival

If you’ve done an Alaskan cruise on carnival how did you like it?  What age group would you say was more on the cruise? My husband and I are early 40s and are kind of scared of being bored out of our minds.

Thanks!

We did it two years ago as a journey cruise and had a very nice time.

What age group did you notice more of on the ship? Did you happen to do any excursions?

Typically on journey cruises you get older crowd lots of scooters and walkers.

Did Harv and Marv for one (whale watching) and ____ Dave as another forgot first name of his company. but went to Yukon. Both very good private ones.

Going back in August for combo cruise/land trip but with Princess this time

We took the Alaskan cruise with Carnival two years ago. We went in May. It was the first cruise of the year in Alaska and the last one before the Legend was refurbished. The cruise was middle aged to older being it was the first week of May. We took the glacier excursion in Juneau, the train, Red Onion Salon and Salmon bake in Skagway, and totem tour and Lumberjack show in Ketchican. We had time after each to walk around the port. We enjoyed all of them.

My wife and I are in our late 70's and we are taking our sixth Alaska cruise this month on the Legend.  We have enjoyed each one and have experienced  a range of weather.  The sight seeing is spectacular and tours at each stop cater to a range of tastes and enthusiasm.  We have ridden Helicopters and the Train in Skagway and the Mt Roberts Tram in Juneau.  The entertainment on the ship has always been very good and there is a naturalist on board giving briefings and pointing out wild life.  If you are looking for a party you will find one or you can start your own!  We think the crowds skew a little bit older than a Caribbean or Mexican cruise but that may be more because of cost than anything else.  I do not think you will be bored.  As a matter of fact if you try to do everything the cruise offers you will go home gassed--believe me we have tried! :-)

First, let me say we were all pretty steady Carnival cruisers for the past 10 years, however whenever we talked with anyone about Alaska, everyone said the same thing, to go with Princess, so since it's still part of the Carnival Corp. (stockholder credit) we decided to book with them.  From what I have read the age range is more varied and doesn't necessarily cater to the older set and might  be more of what your looking for with your age group.  We are looking forward to it and since our adult daughters are joining this cruise with us next year, we thought it would be more enjoyable for them also to have some others closer to their age group.  Go to Princess boards and read up on their cruises, it's a lot to take in, lol.  Good Luck with your planning, I will admit it's the most time I've ever spent planning a vacation even when we went to the Mediterranean for 2 weeks.

We did the last two journeys cruises out of Long Beach and had a wonderful time on each cruise. Both cruises had the same itinerary. The age group ranged from 30s to the 70s and possibly older. The amount of kids was very low around 30.  The journeys cruises have  an older following, plus a lot of diamonds and platinums. Two years ago on the Miracle we had about 1000 D&Ps The 7 day cruises have a younger crowd. . If you like history, beautiful landscape and old cities to explore you won’t be bored. Alaska cruises are not like Caribbean cruises.

We did it n September last year. The last one of the season. Dh and I are in our mid 40’s, and I felt there was a good mix. There were probably 20 kids total. Like skrufy said, its nothing like a Caribbean  cruise. It is so port intensive, there’s no time to be board. We did whale watching, helicopter tour and landed on a glacier, rode the train to Canada, and a sea plane excursion. One full day was cruising through Glacier Bay. We got a pod on Serenity facing aft, and stayed there all day long. Absolutely my most favorite cruise so far. The time difference was the only negative. But not enough to slow us down.

We sailed mid May for our Alaskan cruise.  We were late 50's at the time and there was a mixed bag of ages on the ship.  We met an awesome couple from Colorado and had a lot of fun with them.  Every port we got off and did an excursion.  At night we would go to the shows in the theater or spend some time in the casino.  Most nights we were in bed early because the cold will do that to you.  On sea days we did trivia and casino time.  Depending on your tastes, you could sit on your balcony and just take in all the beauty.  Enjoy!

It really matters when you go to Alaska. If its in the beginning or late season more older crowd. If you go between summer vacation time  (June - Aug) its a mix of ages. Our first Alaska cruise, we went in July had great weather and a lot of kids with a good  range of adults between 30 to 70.

We are booked for the last sailing this year and figure this will be more older crowd which will be fine with me. The beauty of Alaska is so breathtaking. and  enjoyable which is probably why we are going back.

Been to Alaska on both Carnival and Princess.  Younger and more energetic crowd on Carnival.  We had some great musicians on Carnival...….luck of the draw maybe.  Food better on Princess.

The vast majority of people that go to Alaska go for Alaska.  The beauty is beyond incredible no matter what ship you are on.  If you are looking for entertainment you are probably wasting your money.  Alaska cruises are not cheap.

On a scale of 1-10 I would rate an Alaskan cruise a 37...…..no matter what ship you go on.  The show is Alaska, not the ship.

I do understand! I guess we are still pretty young (in my head at least) so we kind of wanted some people our age. We aren’t party people so that doesn’t bother me. I’m sure we will be fine!

Thanks for all the responses! I truly appreciate it!

We went the first week of August 2014. We were late 40s early 50s at the time and our sons were 11 and 15. There was a slightly older crowd than normal but not so much that we really noticed any difference. We aren’t party people either but so can’t comment in that but all the normal scheduled evening activities were taking place. The teen groups were smaller but especially my older son had maybe his best cruise ever. Still is in touch with some of the kids he met.

We went in July 2016 and had a great time. There were a lot of teenagers (a major school group that was doing an awesome west coast trip of like 30 days!), but they were good, no real problems with them. Our tween son had enough people to hang with as well. We did an excursion in every port. We're a couple in our 40s (me) and early 50s (hubby).

I would read more on the Alaska board to get more info on ideas of what you want to do. Also, lots of people write reviews (I have mine in my signature).

My husband and I just went in May (He's 42 and I'm 39) and we had a blast. Mix of ages everywhere and the piano bar was the busiest I've ever seen it. We plan on going again and taking our teenage kids.

We just walked around the tourist area in Juneau, rode a train in Skagway and went Salmon fishing in Ketchikan. So worth it!!

Thank you! Did you cruise with Carnival? If so, which ship and what port did you leave from?

We did Alaska on the Legend last August...it was me (51), dd (13) and mom (77).

We had a blast...I loved the Legend and they had lots of activities and music everywhere.   I loved sitting on our balcony and watching the scenery or looking for whales as we passed by.    The naturalist on board was great.

The only thing I missed was there are no LIDO movies as they have no screen for that.

We did a whale watching tour, a glacier tour, a dog sledding tour, gold panning, and shopping.

I went solo on the Legend 3 weeks ago.  I had a blast!   Mixed ages.  It's not an old fart cruise.  The kids were in the pools since we had a warm week.  It is far from boring!  I have always cruised out of Miami with my sister and we like to have a fun time, and this Alaska cruise was just as fun.  Go!  You will have fun.  I live at the Jersey Shore so we all like to have fun and I was never bored.  The shore excursions are unique and I enjoyed all of them.  BTW - I wrote a review on the Legend a few weeks ago also.

We were on the Splendor Journey cruise last August/September.  To us it seemed the usual mix of people with the usual activities, for the times of year we cruise (fall and February).   Whatever other people and activities you do to keep you occupied will be on the Alaska cruise too.  Plus, it's Alaska, which makes it a unique cruise experience.  Don't skimp on the excursions.  We had sea lions popping up next to our kayaks, brown bears fishing, so many whales we couldn't keep track of where to look, and a helicopter ride to a glacier where I look cool in a picture--a first for me.
