Hotel in Port of Miami

Hi

Thank you everyone for your help. Have done a couple of dummy quotes and the price is the same with same location drop off and different location drop off.

Any difference between hiring from Alamo, Hertz or Avis or someone else?

Have a look at the drop-off points.  There's an Avis and a couple of others close to the Holiday Inn Port of Miami, for instance.  We were able to drop off our bags there, then drive to the rental office, drop off the car, and walk back to the hotel to check in.  So that's a consideration.

(Next time, we'll be doing the 2021 WC and have a night's stay at the Ritz Carlton on Key Biscayne, which conveniently has a Hertz drop-off office.  So we'll be renting from Hertz then.)

The Intercontinental (Bayside) has a Car Rental drop-off counter inside. If you have to return to the airport, try & check-in to your hotel first. Leave all your luggage in your room, & it makes the return journey from the airport much easier!!

Thank you all, will check out Hampton Inn and using Hertz. In the past I have used US Car Hire who I think are based in the UK and always found their packages, which include 'everything' at a cheaper rate than going direct but will do some dummy bookings and see what comes up.

Cant wait for January to arrive!! 😎

We did this the other way round in October 2018 after a cruise ending in Miami.

  • Booked with Hertz (through Costco UK for extra discount and inclusions)
  • Picked up at Hertz depot at 229 SE 2nd Street (Hertz runs a shuttle between here and the Miami Cruise terminal or a short cab ride)
  • Dropped off at Miami ReAirport car rental centre a couple of days later before flying home

Don't recall any heavy additional fees. As @Hambagahle suggests you could try a couple of dummy bookings on line to see if there is much difference in rental charges for the alternatives.

Rental car drop fee depends on what state you are renting in.  Generally in Florida at the majors no drop fee within Florida.  Airport facility charges are high at all airports and reasonable elsewhere.  You only pay the facility fee where you rent and not whee you drop the car.  Do pretend bookings on line directly with the rental company to check total costs and then take the lowest and most convenient approach.

Recently we rented a car at MIA upon arrival, dropped DW and luggage at the port and returned the car to the airport and UBER back to the port.  Really Easy.  Don't forget while the airport car rental is open 24/7, the other locations are NOT and some days like Sunday completely closed.  YMMV

Hertz office near Miami port is open on Sundays according to their website, but agree not 24 hours:

Hertz Port of Miami
229 Southeast 2nd Street, Miami, Florida, United States
Hours of Operation: Mon 7:00AM-4:00PM, Tues-Thurs 8:00AM-4:00PM, Fri-Sun 7:00AM-4:00PM

Best is for OP  to check with the rental company when booking.

Just want to comment on the difficult traffic in Miami.  Hopefully you are adept at driving on the "wrong side of the street":classic_biggrin: because when we drove in London, it was definitely challenging.  If you are not comfortable driving, there are other really nice modes of transportations in Miami.

You’ll get as many opinions as replies on this, I think.  A lot of it will depend on what you want in a hotel...low price, central location, amenities, beach access, etc.  We’ve stayed at the Kimpten Epic and we liked it for its location, it was a quick Uber to the terminal the next day.  There are quite a few hotels right in the downtown area - it will also depend on when you’re looking, too.  Rates can vary quite a bit.

Kimpton Epic for sure

Wow thank you for that list Keith much appreciated, given me some work to do to check them all out 👍

You are welcome.

Let me suggest that you drop off the rental car at Miami airport.

From the airport take Uber to the hotel you choose.

From the hotel you choose take Uber to the Port Of Miami.

Keep it simple.

Keith
