windsurferfirst Posted September 19, 2019 #1 Share Posted September 19, 2019 (edited) Looking for a hotel to stay in the night before boarding in Civitavecchia. Something really close to the port that offers a shuttle would be great. - Thanks Edited: One where you can see the ship in the morning would be a real bonus. hbrote Posted September 19, 2019 #2 Share Posted September 19, 2019 I'll Suggest Hotel Borgo Del Mar. A Bit outside of town but they provide the shuttle for you to the ship and they also have a reasonable priced shuttle from FCO. The food in their restaurant is fantastic and the rooms are great. Check them out on trip advisor as we have stayed there twice.

It happens too often with them to be a simple error....
Bobal Posted September 20, 2019 #7 Share Posted September 20, 2019 The closest one to the port is the Hotel Traghetto, which is literally across the road from the port buses. You can see all ships in port, particularly if you have one of their balcony rooms. It's a basic hotel with a very simple breakfast, but it's also very reasonably priced. Don't expect the same standard of facilities/comfort as many US hotel chains but It's fine for somewhere to lay your head, very close to the port and with a very friendly staff.
Rare fabnfortysomething Posted September 20, 2019 #8 Share Posted September 20, 2019 we have booked Alibrandi Palace and they offer transfer from FCO airport to hotel with local taxi firm for 130euros and a small additional fee for shared shuttle to ship next morning hope we have made right choice

You mention port buses being right outside, is this the best way to get to the ship? Edited September 20, 2019 by windsurferfirst .

Bobal Posted September 20, 2019 #11 Share Posted September 20, 2019 windsurferfirst - the port buses are the only way to get to the ship, apart from walking, which is some distance with luggage.

They may be difficult to flag down independently, but a hotel can arrange one for you if you request it.

Be careful! DO NOT BOOK SCAM GIORGIO! We had 7 reservations made a year in advance. Two weeks before they cancelled and tried to move us out to another hotel for the same cost (100+Euros). Which if booked independently would be half the cost. This is not a one time thing. Check out reviews on TripAdvisor but not the first couple as they keep being bumped. This bait and switch has happened to a lot of people over the course of a couple of years. I would highly recommend to find somewhere else. Think of how hard it would be to find 10 rooms two weeks before travelling especially with a cruise ship in town. We did book the other hotel for the one night precruise directly for half the cost. It was ok for the price. Oh and watchout as shuttle prices change between getting on and getting off. Next time we will stay in Rome and transfer to Civi in the morning. divepal Posted November 11, 2019 #16 Share Posted November 11, 2019 Just confirming what others have said about San Giorgio hotel. DO NOT book with them. They will absolutely confirm your reservations and go as far as sending specials for their wine and cheese get together. Then at the last minute they cancel your reservation. Markanddonna Posted November 12, 2019 #17 Share Posted November 12, 2019 We will be staying at Borgo del Mare. They have good reviews and the communication by emails concerning shuttle transportation has been clear and fast. I expect to enjoy our stay. I'll report back! KeywestK Posted November 13, 2019 #18 Share Posted November 13, 2019 Based on information provided in this thread, I booked Hotel Traghetto for one night pre-cruise for next October. Emailed the hotel for clarification about the shuttle to the cruise terminal, and had a response with full explanation within minutes. Excellent customer service. Rare Hlitner Posted December 1, 2019 #20 Share Posted December 1, 2019 I will toss out some thoughts based on our own recent experience. Regarding the San Giorgio, we cannot recommend that hotel because the management has proven itself to not be reliable. While it is arguably one of the better hotels in town, there is no way to be sure your reservation will be honored. Until the management shows more responsibility to its patrons it is a place we will avoid. As to the Borgo del Mar, we recently (October) stayed at that property. The management was excellent, the hotel clean, and our room was OK. The problem is the location which is a good mile outside of town. For those without a car this can be a real annoyance. There are very few restaurant options in the area so most will want to go into town for dinner. Walking is not a great idea as there is one section (along the main road) without a sidewalk...where we think it is dangerous. Even the hotel staff warned us about this one section (over a bridge). The hotel did provide free shuttle service to the cruise ships (you need to sign-up in advance). DW and I took our chances and walked into town (it was still daylight) for dinner. After dinner we got our restaurant to call a taxi to take us back to the hotel since we were concerned about walking in the dark. Our caution was not because of crime (very rare) but because of the risk of being hit by a car or truck while walking through the section without any sidewalk. At this point we still do not feel comfortable recommending any hotel in Civitavecchia. We have another cruise out of that port next year, but will likely spend a few pre cruise days in Rome and totally avoid staying in "Civ." When the time comes when we feel the need to again spend another night in "Civ" we will probably reevaluate all the local options. As much as we appreciated the friendliness at the Borgo del Mare, we think it's location is just too darn inconvenient. Hank
