Just got this email from Regent:

 


"Dear Valued Guest,

We look forward to welcoming you aboard your 14-night Splendor At Sea sailing on February 6, 2020 – the inaugural voyage of Seven Seas Splendor.


We are adjusting Seven Seas Splendor’s Atlantic Crossing itinerary to call on San Juan, Puerto Rico in place of a call to Bermuda. Seven Seas Splendor will visit the United States for the first time and calling on San Juan will facilitate a smoother disembarkation process for all guests on February 20 in Miami.


With this change, we are excited to announce that you will also enjoy additional entertainment that will join us from San Juan to Miami."

We will be in San Juan 2/17 from 6am to Midnight.  Lost the overnight in Bermuda, thus, another sea day on the itinerary.

IMO I think they're trying to get everyone off ASAP on 2/20 so they can get their inspections done and prepare for the christening.

A key element of the San Juan stop will be facilitating the Customs clearance process with Passport checks, and so-on.  We have done this twice on Regent.  Back in the USA.  Made disembarkation at Miami much smoother.

I agree.

I first got wind of this when our booked excursions for Bermuda disappeared on Thursday. First thing  (8:30EST), I called Regent and was assured that my excursions in Bermuda still existed and the Regent telephone representative had not been informed of any changes! Shows how much faith to put into Regent corporate.

Inaugural ( with a small "i") cruise is about the ship, so itinerary change is"mox-nix" to me. So we will have another sea day to do the joint blog!

Personally I love Bermuda and spent a lot of summer holidays there when we were living in New York but that said - I would do anything to speed up US Immigration when arriving in Miami!  And I think that is the underlying reason.  Regent will have VIP passengers boarding for the Christening Cruise in Miami when you disembark and they do not want to be late...

 

Old San Juan and the castle are interesting.  But unless you have time to see the rest of the island (or at least a bit of it?) I am not sure what else is worth seeing.  IF there is a tour to the Rain Forest (el Junque??) then do take that.  Maybe also take a look back at the thread on the Explorer Trans Atlantic this last November for some photos and comments?

Yes, we were on the Explorer transatlantic last month and missed Bermuda due to weather, thus going to San Juan.....was hoping for Bermuda this time....but as they say "ship happens"....NEVER take a cruise for a specific port!

Walking old San Juan is always a treat. I would recommend a historical or a foodie walking tour.  There is so much history and  legends throughout its streets and alleys.  Don’t forget to have a good Piña Colada or a cold local beer.

Really, they have some great places to eat in San Juan........Just walking around it fun, then a great lunch before heading back to the ship.

DW and I visited for a long weekend about 10 years ago and as mentioned had a GREAT time just walking around and having luncheons but it has been a LONG time since then and restaurants often change.

I like the tapas and cold drinks available at the hotel El Convento’s bar which resides in a courtyard on the north end of the hotel. The hotel is located on the corner of La Caleta de las Monjas and Calle del Cristo across from the cathedral). I also like Cafe Boriken (formerly El Puerto Rico) for local food and great Piña Coladas. It is located northeast of the pier at the SW corner of Plaza Colon. Also, Barrachina (Calle de la Fortaleza west of Calle de San Jose Street) where the Piña Colada was supposedly invented. Our youngest ate there recently and loved it. Try to order some mofongo at any of the local restaurants and an ice cold Medalla Light beer. If you have any rum, ask for Don Q Crystal. None of that Bacardi stuffwhich is for tourists.  All the above places are easily walkable from the pier. Enjoy your stay!

Thanks, will try to do. I think we were at El Convento's. I remember a place nearby where there was a famous treasure chest.

Not sure about the treasure chest.  However, walking around Old San Juan is awesome.  There is so much history and sites to see such as the Capilla del Cristo, la Rogativa, El Morro fort, the cemetery, Parque de las Palomas, or even walking the Paseo de la Princesa around the waterfront and leading to the fort.  More importantly, the movie "Captain Ron" was filmed throughout OSJ.  All these sites are within walking distance from the ship, with the exception of El Morro which and the cemetary, which is on the north side of OSJ.  Having a cold drink on the outdoor tables at the south end of Calle del Cristo is always a great way to relax and people watch.

As a kid, we used to visit OSJ whenever we were in that part of the island, and as an adult I've spent a lot of time visiting PR and always make it a point to see OSJ.  I was fortunate enough to have been stationed in PR for a couple of years back in 2001 and one of my duties was to escort foreign national military personnel on sightseeing and shopping trips in between flying counterdrug missions.  OSJ was always a hit with them especially hitting up some of the local establishments and watering holes on Uncle Sam's dime.  Those two years in PR allowed our kids to become familiar with the island's beautiful beaches, nature, and heritage.  

I was on a Regent cruise about five years ago and, on the day prior to arriving in PR, I decided to drink up the ship's rum and wine inventory during the afternoon and the block party.  During that soiree, I invited half the ship to go on a walking tour of OSJ the next day.  I realized I must have had a large time the night before when we arrived in OSJ and there a few couples waiting pierside for my "private" tour.  Unfortunately, I had no recollection of having invited any of them.  Regardless, we had a great time, especially after a little hair of the dog at El Convento where I had the coldest Medalla Light beer ever.  I declared myself fully mission capable and proceeded to show the folks the sites and all the legends of OSJ.

Looking forward to hearing about your experience after your stopover.

Upset and very disapointed with Regent is a mild response from me ....we had looked forward to meeting old friends again for 2 days in Bermuda and feel extremely shortchanged .Its clear that passengers are a total inconvenience to Regent now

Perhaps a bit harsh?  Somehow I seriously doubt that Regent realigned the port schedule just to inconvenience passengers...
