Dawn Casino Smoking -No Enforcement of Non Playing Smoking

We have been on over 20 cruises, mostly with NCL. We understand that some gamblers smoke in the casino. We are on the Dawn now and have NEVER seen so much smoking.Numerous non gamblers sit on the window seats, stand in the aisles, and sit at the bar and smoke day and night. Last night, a lady was sitting at my Three Card Poker table, not playing, and smoking several cigarettes. When I pointed that out to 2 pit bosses, they said “she played earlier.”  Can you imagine if all smoking gamblers that “played earlier” just sat at gaming tables and smoked without playing!

 

I had to ask the pit boss twice last night to tell someone who was standing next to the table smoking to “move on”. These complaints have been given to management in writing and verbally. There has been no improvement so it appears that it is OK to just use the Dawn Casino as an indoor smoking venue and not even act like you are gambling. 
 

I understand smokers have rights. Just want to give non smoking gamblers, that may be thinking of going on the Dawn, an idea of what they will encounter.

Not just the Dawn........  I agree with your frustration.

Loss of revenue is the only thing NCL will care about.

You did read that the issue revolves around non-players sitting in the casino and smoking.

 

NON-PLAYERS generate ZERO revenue so......

The point of this thread is that NCL has a clear policy that states the casino is NOT a designated smoking area and that the exception is for those players who are actively playing (thus generating revenue) can smoke in the casino......     the issue at hand is non-players who are both smoking and NOT generating revenue in the casino are making it uncomfortable for those non-smoking players who are generating revenue. 

 

NCL has no interest of enforcing this policy against non revenue generating smokers....... plain and simple.

This is absurd.  NCL needs to try harder and stand their ground.  I can remember when smoking was allowed in restaurants and on airplanes and in hotels and in cruise ship cabins, among other places.  When non smoking policies were put into place, smokers threatened to boycott.  Guess what?  They can no longer smoke in the aforementioned places and they still frequent them because they need to travel and need places to stay and eat.  If smokers really want to gamble, they will do that even without smoking.  I am a gambler.  Have gone on many cruises through CAS on NCL and will be going again next week on the Dawn.  This time I put my gambling $$$$ into a suite and will not spend time or money in that nasty, smelly casino.  I am not alone.  And FWIW, we just returned from another HAL cruise where smoking is not allowed in the casino.  The casino was always busy and the air was clear.

I think that’s what they are talking about. NCL would care a lot more if they knew that a potential player was not playing because a non player was in the casino smoking.

NCL absolutely knows this....... and chooses to not enforce

On our recent Getaway cruise, there were endless announcements in the casino that non-playing smokers were not allowed. They did little good. I only witnessed one instance of a casino employee asking two non-playing smokers to move on to a designated smoking area. 

 

IMO, NCL's policy is a halfway attempt doomed to failure. They either need to make the casino non-smoking (with a smoking room on those ships that have them), or just let it go. There are now many non-smoking casinos on land, and several cruise lines have non-smoking casinos. It can be done, but it requires a complete commitment to the policy, no halfway measures.

Good to know that Oceania casinos are smoke-free. My husband and I have been thinking of trying out Oceania, and this would be a plus!

On my last cruise, I was an active slots player and smoker. Being considerate, I always told anyone who wanted to  sit next to me that I was a smoker. Usually it was fine. Plus, if I felt that it was bothering anyone  close by,  I would often leave my things and go over to the window area (as far away from people as possible in the casino). But alas, that was not good enough for some.  I had some woman yelling.."smoking is for active players only!". My attempts to tell her I was "playing"..fell on deaf ears..

Yes, I can read quite well. I know economics can be a difficult subject to understand for some people., but I'll try to break it down for you.

 

The only thing a business cares about is profit. Complaining online about a smokey casino filled with non-playing smokers will not likely get the notice of the cruise line since their bottom line is not affected. If people were to stop playing and the casino profits dropped then there's a chance the cruise line would notice and then look for a reason.

I am not a smoker and LOVE how NCL has created separate smoke tank areas and casinos. It makes their ships smell so much better.  Smokers have ALWAYS smoked in the casino whether they are playing or not.  Its one of the few areas of the ship that allows smoking and bet your bottom dollar they are going there to smoke.

The part that many did not mention is the OP stated smokers were sitting at tables while not playing.  This problem solves itself because no way in hell anyone that wants to play will the casino let non playing players take up their tables.  If you wanted to play you tell them to move or the casino would tell them to move.  Remember the sage advice your mother told you in first grade?  Worry about yourself and not what others are doing.  That applies here.  If the smokers are not taking up your seat when you want to play, why do you care.  You are spending too much time counting smokers and players in the casino instead of enjoying your cruise.  Because they are smoking in a smoking casino is not the point. Imagine someone not smoking and sitting at a table but not playing.  Do you really believe if someone wants to play that person is going to be allowed to sit there much longer?  

I cant believe I wrote something to defend smokers but I just did 😲

So your economic solution is for those who enjoy gambling to boycott the casino because NCL isn't enforcing the smoking by non-players?? 

 

That's right, punish those who play by the rules.
