Houndfish Posted April 20, 2020 #1 Share Posted April 20, 2020 I have been following current ship activity on Cruise Tracker. Most of the ships off Florida appear to be anchored with some moving. The anchored and the moving seem to change daily. What is going on with that?
CruiserBruce Posted April 20, 2020 #2 Share Posted April 20, 2020 As explained on the various threads, ships need to move away from land for various functions, like making water and legally disposing of waste.

Also, some may be moving to port to take on provisions and fuel.

We are seeing this with some regularity, here at Bridgetown as ships take turns coming alongside to provision and re-fuel
Sunburg1 Posted April 23, 2020 #5 Share Posted April 23, 2020 (edited) Both the Celebrity Eclipse and the Disney Wonder are tied up at the San Diego B Street pier for the duration. This week, on separate days both have left the pier, gone a few miles offshore and circled around for a few hours and then returned. Out of idle curiosity I wonder why? Do they dump garbage, lubricate some moving parts or is there another reason? Edited April 23, 2020 by Host Kat Threads merged.

Rare ColeThornton Posted April 23, 2020 #7 Share Posted April 23, 2020 They need to keep the engines in shape and make sure things still work like the fore and aft Flux Capacitors.
Rare Essiesmom Posted April 23, 2020 #8 Share Posted April 23, 2020 They also need to make drinking water which is less expensive to do when in motion that when tide up. EM

EM You are not allowed to make water when tied up, or within 12 miles of shore, but doing so burns more fuel to get enough heat to make water, so it is a trade off between purchasing water at the dock, or making it underway. As Paul says, the treated sewage needs to be pumped out.
Sunburg1 Posted May 5, 2020 #11 Share Posted May 5, 2020 There are at least half a dozen cruise ships sitting off the coast but these two ships have been tied up at the pier except for brief periods for more than a month. Would it not be much cheaper to join the others offshore, they must be paying a lot for the pier space.
Houndfish Posted May 5, 2020 Author #12 Share Posted May 5, 2020 I heard that some ships are being refueled by barges while anchored in the Bahamas
