We've only cruised out of Fort Lauderdale, but are thinking about a cruise out of Tampa.  What hotels are nearest the port?

Just noted your post.

Plenty of good hotels close to the port (we used the Marriott), but we fell foul of traffic.

The taxi took over 45 minutes stuck in traffic, fare (10 years ago) was $65.00 - Could have walked it quicker.

Advice, forget going to the terminal at hotel checkout, as every one will do this, take time out, talk a walk round or coffee, and leave by taxi after 14.00 hours.  Thereby missing the roadblock.

We like the Embassy Suites at the Convention Center. Very near the pier, nice waterfront area across the street, trolley station out front to go to Ybor City, short Uber / Lyft ride to the pier or you can even take the trolley, depending on the pier you are going to.

Last cruise that we were on leaving from Tampa we stayed at the Hotel Barrymore. A cab ride from the port but more than reasonably priced and many local shops, and restaurants around. The closer to the port, the more expensive they tend to be. Shuttle ride to the pier was trouble free and reasonable. The hotel had an inhouse bar and restaurant. Both were great. Rates on this hotel are easily less than half the big name hotels at the pier.

Ybor museum is worth a visit.  It is small and inexpensive, but gives the Cuban history of Tampa.

Time for lunch?  The Columbia (the original Columbia) is in Ybor city.

And do take the trolley mentioned above.  It goes from Ybor City (near the cruise port) to Tampa - a convenient way to get a glimpse of the city.

Depending on you situation ie: are you arriving a couple of days early or if you can manage luggage on your own the Aloft Hotel in downtown Tampa was a good choice for us. The cab ride from the airport to downtown was a flat rate of $25.00 at the time.

The Aloft is close to lots of food options, a CVS,  the Tampa River Walk and a Hop on Trolley terminal. The trolley goes right by the cruise dock and continues on to Ybor City. We stayed at the Aloft pre cruise and used the trolley service both days. On embarkation day we walked from the Aloft with our luggage to a trolley stop near the hotel and got dropped off right in front of the cruise terminal. I can not recall the trolley fare but it was only a few dollars each.

If you can not wrangle your own luggage it is a short cab ride from the hotel to the cruise terminal.
