Kiwi Kruzer Posted December 20, 2020 #1 Share Posted December 20, 2020 After being in hibernation due to Covid$ and the lack of International tourists and cruise ships the Dunedin City Council has underwritten the service ,which will run at weekends for locals. It will help to keep the service operational, on a use it or lose it basis ,until the cruise ships come back . https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/431185/dunedin-council-steps-up-to-offer-summer-tourist-rail-service

I enjoyed the train trip when we did it in 2019. No bubble forming with OZ until the vaccine, IMHO.
Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted December 20, 2020 #3 Share Posted December 20, 2020 That's great news. I have fond memories of doing it in 2007 when we did a South Island land trip. We also did the TranzAlpine. I liked the Taieri Gorge trip best though.

possum52 Posted December 20, 2020 #6 Share Posted December 20, 2020 That is good news - we loved our Taieri Gorge trip in November 2018. Even if I did injure my leg climbing on to the train at Dunedin Station. Leigh
Blackduck59 Posted December 20, 2020 #7 Share Posted December 20, 2020 Excellent news, I hope the Kiwis can keep it going. With any luck we will be in Dunedin in 2022 and even though we didn't have that excursion on our list, I think that we will help to keep it going if we can. We didn't book it through Princess, we booked privately which was much, much cheaper. The main difference is that the ship booked train picks you up at the port, we had to travel by coach into Dunedin railway station to board ours. pully8 Posted December 21, 2020 #9 Share Posted December 21, 2020 We did the train trip as part of an APT trip, not a cruise. It was hot weather and unfortunately there was a bushfire which meant the train had to stop mid trip with all on board for sometime. There were helicopters dropping water from red buckets on to the fire. Our carriages were not air conditioned and it was hot, so consider that if travelling in hot weather. Also remember to carry water.
