crisstyd Posted August 10, 2021 #1 Share Posted August 10, 2021 We leave in a few days for our cruise. What is the best tip from those of you who have cruised recently for carrying your masks for when they are needed?
csm5986142 Posted August 10, 2021 #2 Share Posted August 10, 2021 I was planning to hook it onto a lanyard along with my sail/sign card, but that's not ideal. Hoping somebody else has a better suggestion.

tallnthensome Posted August 10, 2021 #4 Share Posted August 10, 2021 You might want to post in the "ask a cruise question " forum as this really has nothing to do with Carnival Cruise Line.

crisstyd Posted August 10, 2021 Author #6 Share Posted August 10, 2021 Mostly i'm concerned on pool days or formal nights. Don't usually have anything like a purse. I was thinking of picking up a lanyard but then it would be dangling all over

I didnt know about thay board. I disagree. This definitely has something do to with Carnival Cruise Line. There is a mask mandate at the current time. I have been trying to figure out a clean and convenient option myself. Don't want to just leave it dangling around my neck or tuck it in my pocket or purse to just have to pull it out for a quick ride on an elevator. Don't want to put it down on public surfaces. There has to be a good solution and this is the place to get the input for it.

Not sure what else you can do with it other than “have it dangling” or put it in “something”. Nothing is ideal so it is a matter of what is most convenient for you. The set we ordered from Amazon included masks, lanyards and a pouch. The pouch was convenient when we got to where we were going - beach, pool, restaurant but for walking around the lanyard was very convenient. It had two clips to attach to mask and a toggle to adjust length so mask didn’t flap about when not worn or could be used as an extender to take pressure off ears. The mask was always available and not left or dropped somewhere inadvertently. In Cozumel masks are required in all public areas and it became second nature to just wear the lanyard so the mask was always available.

A couple of different options for different situations is probably the best way to go.

Rare PurpleHays Posted August 11, 2021 #14 Share Posted August 11, 2021 I use elastic bands from headbands. They have clips on both ends that I attach to the mask elastic. As a bonus, they keep the elastic off the back of my ears. When I take the mask off, it hangs pretty close to my neck so I usually don't even notice it. These are the bands https://shops.lillarose.biz/MemberToolsDotNet/ShoppingCartV4/ProductDetailv4.aspx?ProductID=19526&CatalogueID=211&MG=2&G1=126&G2=127 (side note--I've worked in the operating room for 33+ years, so I don't see a mask around the neck--or on my face--as a big deal. I see a lot of folks saying it's a deal breaker, but I can honestly say I'd rather be wearing a mask on a cruise than at work)

Pockets are germy. I keep my masks in plastic sandwich bags when not in use, gallon size bags on occasion, don't touch any part of the mask with my fingers except the straps.
Keksie Posted August 11, 2021 #18 Share Posted August 11, 2021 All along if I didn't have my purse with me (where my mask resides at the bottom) I would stick it in a pocket. I have a thin cloth mask so it doesn't hurt to crumple it up. If I needed to take while going to the pool I would stick it in my tote. I always carry a tote to the pool for my book, sunscreen, coverup etc. For formal nights I have always carried a small, jeweled bag for my card, casino money and lipstick and it would stuff in there. cruiseracer Posted August 11, 2021 #20 Share Posted August 11, 2021 Guess I still don't get this process. As I understand it; the mask is supposed to 'catch & prevent' the virus particles from transferring through the mask and become ingested or breathed in by the wearer. (In other words; as we inhale, the particles are 'caught' and held by the outside of the mask.) If true - what happens to those particles on the outside of the mask when we put it into our pocket/purse/plastic baggie...? Wouldn't the particles transfer and spread from the outside of the mask to everything inside those articles, thus contaminating the contents?

Short answer- yes. Without proper handling, anything that touches the mask is contaminated by the mask and also contaminates the mask surfaces that are touched. There is a proper way of storing a used mask so that it can safely be reused within a short period, but I've rarely seen anyone actually doing it, although I do. The way most people contaminate both the inside and outside of their masks when wearing them, I'm really not surprised that so many people get COVID even though they say they always wear a mask when outside the home. I thought the masks were supposed to keep the particles in so that you are protecting other people in case you have covid. They were not supposed to keep the particles from getting to you (except for fitted N95s). There may be very minimal protection by wearing one. Yes stuffing the mask into a pocket etc. is probably contaminating everything so people who are worried about this issue should take care how they handle and store their masks.
Rare PurpleHays Posted August 11, 2021 #23 Share Posted August 11, 2021 Once your mask is on your face, you shouldn't touch it again. It should be removed by touching strings/elastics only. Disposables should be discarded after one use and reusables should also be tossed in the dirty laundry after use. Clean ones can be carried in pockets, but I don't stuff used ones in my pocket or purse. One of the purposes of a mask is to slow the projection or organisms when one sneezes, coughs, talks, sings, or pants/breathes heavily when working out. A mask can't prevent you from catching anything (except for an N95 alledgedly). They also protect the wearer from rapidly picking up airborne bacteria/viruses. The most important parts: tight/close fitting, cover your mouth *and* nose, and keep your hands off! (again, my 33+ years of wearing the things, sometimes up to 16 hour days. I am qualified to speak about mask usage)

If your mask wound up carrying nasty airborne particles, so would everything you wore. The purpose of the mask is two-fold: to prevent your exhaled particles from infecting others -- (to the extent your mask did that, I suppose your pocket could be a spreader item); and to, at least partially, intercept exhaled particles from others --- but you would have to expect that, if the air around you was filled with nasty particles, all your clothing would be contaminated anyway. Just wear a mask - change it as often as possible, and hope for the best. Better still -- keep as much distance as possible between you and others ---- which sort of suggests that cruising right now might not be the smartest thing.

How can something which "...can't protect you from catching anything..." still will "...also protect the wearer from rapidly picking up airborne bacteria/virus."? In any event, while a mask is not sure protection, it is obvious that ANY material between possible transmitters and your insides can help protect you.. It is tiresome hearing people unthinkingly repeat the notion that something which is is not 100% effective is of NO use .
