Who buys these painting I wonder on every cruise as most of them are dreradful!

My mother and I buy a painting every year on board.  Each is a special memory. My most recent purchase is a one of a kind original by a newish artist. There are a few gems in between the usual stuff.  I too find most of it fugly.

Curious to know what was supplied for provenance.  And does the artist, by chance, work for Park West?

I guess it depends on your definition of original.  I don't mind buying a print if it's marked xx/yy.  (And signed by the artist.)

"supplied for provenance"?, not sure what you are asking.  Some artists have exclusive distribution deals with Park West. My most recent purchase was by Kevin "Kre8" Vigil, whom I believe is such an artist.

Although  that is an original that is not being re-produced, I have some limited number prints as well.  I do make sure that I only buy limited prints that are hand-signed by the artist, at least. Otherwise its just like buying a poster.  Over time, if chosen well, they do appreciate in value.  But I only get what I love to look at or has a personal meaning for me.

A few of the joys of cruising on a luxury ship is there are no photographers, no art auctions, and no sale tables of junk taking up space.

Hank

Then I wish you well on your luxury cruise and I suppose some will miss you here.

How do YOU know that an "original" is not being reproduced?  Is that what they told you?

Any art original, limited etc is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.  Some it is hype.  I have gotten a few pieces and enjoy the art but never looked at them as investments overall.  Same as a piece of furniture. I enjoy looking at them and the scenes.  I have originals that I have gotten from direct artists but will never sell since they were bought for a personal level of enjoyment.

Well first of all it is clearly an oil on canvas. There is no glass (which an original oil would never have), and there is a letter of authenticity. It was also pictured in their brochure as an original that was not being reproduced. I also have the art I buy, if it is an original;, mixed media, or hand-embellished by the artist authenticated and appraised by a third party after purchase.

I discovered this artist onboard a ship and because I love dragonflies, I bought it (I also love the frame).  I LOVE it.  It is signed in both corners and hangs in my office where I can look at it every day.  The artist is Rob Kaz and Beau the frog is one of his trademarks.  Everything he paints has Beau somewhere in it, sometimes prominently and sometimes hidden.  He is also a Disney Certified Artist and does a lot of Star Wars paintings.  He was thrilled when George Lucas purchased a few of his pictures!  It has been a joy to actually come to know him and his wife, Doris, personally.  I purchased another print that hangs in my living room on that cruise.  I have also purchased other pieces at his exhibitions and online.  He is always doing something at Disney with his art as he lives in Florida.  I wouldn't have know about him without seeing his work on a cruise ship.

Assuring that you have a real Mr. Melty there, not a reproduction of any sort.  I, for one, have no idea of the nature of the deal between Vigil and Park West.

According to the park west people on the ship, they can tell you how the relationships with different artists (or their estates) work.  It really isn't generally hard to tell if a painting is an original or not (at least in terms of original materials and method of production).  As to whether a painting is the artist's own or a forgery...that's different. I am well aware that many people think this is all a scam.  I also know  that many people really don't appreciate art, no matter who the artists is, or the media used.  That's fine. Those folks are missing out on something wonderful in life.  It's their loss.

Just off Silhouette- art auctions as usual even with 50% occupancy.

I love having different activities on the ship, even if it is not something I am interested in participating in. Thinking back, I recall skeet shooting on the Norway...back in the 80s... hard to imagine loaded guns on a ship these days...

Yup.  Won the competition on an NCL Seaward cruise in '86 and was awarded the bottle of cheap "champagne"!

I too have been on a ship with skeet shooting, we had to stop for a few minutes as a Navy ship passed outside of Key West...Circa 1992.

On Equinox it was held just outside the World Class Bar where they have a permanent "Art Gallery"

During the refit moved along to where the photo gallery used to be. Photo gallery moved down now opposite the shops next to the casino.

Internet office also moved to fit in extra inside cabins.

On the Equinox the auctions are held adjacent to the art gallery, in an open  space w/a bar. On Sumit they are held in the Rend ez vous lunge.

Was the artist KRE8?

I saw some of his work on the Majestic a few weeks ago. I do like his work.

As for the OP question. Auctions going on as normal.
