gatorchinsky Posted November 11, 2021 #1 Share Posted November 11, 2021 We haven’t been on a cruise since we became Platinum so I was wondering how many choices for the bottle of wine do you get? Are they decent choices?
MoCruiseFan Posted November 11, 2021 #2 Share Posted November 11, 2021 You get what you get and it is usually a very el-cheapo bottle of 'wine'.
Rare KeithJenner Posted November 11, 2021 #3 Share Posted November 11, 2021 In my experience the platinum wine is not bad, compared to the selections you have for wine by the glass with the beverage package for example. You get a choice of about 8 each of red or white wine (I can’t remember exactly). We usually ask for it unopened and drink it back at the cabin when we are relaxing on the balcony.

This looks very similar to the wine list we had last week on the Jade so I don't think many changes were made, if any.
Rare Sailing12Away Posted November 12, 2021 #7 Share Posted November 12, 2021 It's free. For anyone who wants to complain about it, get some juice and make your own sangria with it. Same with the free sparkling water - mix it with OJ or cranberry or apple juice for a morning mimosa. 1

It was probably the #324 Cab.

Bingo!! There is a small minority that hopes the "free" wine sucks so that they have a somewhat legitimate complaint about NCL and life in general. Complaining is the only thing that makes them feel truly satisfied. More the pitty..... That's not the same thing as fun, which is all I ask for and receive from my NCL cruise. I enjoyed the free Black Label, Bulleit and JD Rye on my October Encore cruise. If it were Red Label, Jim Beam and nothing, I would still have a fantastic time. 😎🐀

I recall having the Spellbound Petite Sirah one evening when the Head Chef and Maître d' happened by our table to chat. They must have liked our feedback because moments later they comp'd a bottle for us. We'll have our first Platinum dinner in a couple of weeks - time to start some research on this list.

So out of curiosity, I ran a quick search for ratings on four of these wines. I was somewhat impressed with the tasting notes vs. the prices. Here are the ones I ran: Gérard Bertrand Cabernet Sauvignon “Réserve Spéciale” Languedoc, France: Typically rated 87-88; $9.00 Rancho Zabaco Zinfandel “Heritage Vines” Dry Creek Valley: Typically rated 89-90; $14.50 Louis Jadot Gamay Beaujolais-Villages, Beaujolais, France: Typically rated 89-91; $13.00 Torres Tempranillo “Altos Ibéricos” Crianza Rioja, Spain: Typically rated 90-92; $14.00+ I've only had two previously - the Rancho Zabaco Zinfandel and Louis Jadot Gamay Beaujolais-Villages. None sound at all bad. Edited November 12, 2021 by HuliHuli
latebloomer56 Posted November 12, 2021 #17 Share Posted November 12, 2021 I generally opt for something new for our free bottle I like trying different things on vacation. I do however give the sparkling stuff in our cabin away. We are in the Haven again in March and the stuff is so bad even OJ can't help it (my taste others differ) and without fail I always end up with more of the stuff from the coin slide machine. Last time I gave 6 bottles away in the casino on the last night :). First six people with a wine glass got a bottle :). Heavens I miss cruising.
Rare mking8288 Posted November 12, 2021 #18 Share Posted November 12, 2021 We do and I know of others, don't "waste" that free bottle of sparkling stuff and return it to the ship to re-gift it, and the room steward with more work - by using it as a door prize or giveaway if there's a CC Meet & Greet/Mingle. First time cruisers and coming to the M&G usually don't mind ... and/or save that for the Slot Pull as extra prize(s) although the casino host usually donate a bottle or two for the CC event. Not giving NCL corporate funky ideas - if they discontinue the sparkling "wine" - a minority will moan & groan about it somewhere ... we'll be happy exchanging an extra carton of water in a box, or two. Sigh, more "work" for the housekeeping department or room stewards. It's a decent selection, acceptable to some, of complimentary wine - that now retails for $10 to $15 in town but we all know, high markups and with the corkage fee for BYO, it isn't bad. YMMV Thanks, I looked at the whites, and it looked like the Gruner might be the best bet of the list. Good to hear positive feedback on that one! The Pinot Grigio looks like it could be worst value, $6-$7 a bottle compared to most of them retail at around $14-$15 or so, between what I saw and what @HuliHulihas above as well.
