Who Gets Contact Traced???

As far as I can see from reading these boards, once a person tests positive while on the cruise , some "contact tracing" begins of others who have been "near" to that person.  So who gets tested?  I can see that other traveling companions and people on the same shore excursion would be, but who else?  How do they decide?  Are people sharing dining tables?   Also, are people kind of jamming into bars and the casino?  We are scheduled for Reflection January 19 and still planning to go, but also to stay socially distanced from others.  Any information on this is welcome.   Thank you and stay safe.

At least one poster here (who was just on Reflection) I believe said that the contact tracing was not consistent. With the numbers we are seeing onboard some of these ships I wonder is it because they are doing stringent contact tracing and picking up a lot of connected cases or is it just becoming so overwhelming that they have not been keeping up with it or maybe don’t want to trace for fear of finding more cases and upping their numbers? The latter worries me based on what the aforementioned Reflection pax said about recommending they get tested once they got off the ship instead of onboard.

On our B2B people were sharing tables, the Retreat was fully booked so many tables were about 2’ apart, the Martini bar was full with people standing behind those seated hoping to grab a seat when someone left.  Silent Disco was a crammed dance floor, DH spent a little time in the casino and said the tables were mostly 4-5 players.  The spaces that there seemed to be more social distancing were the gym, the Oceanview cafe, cafe al Bacio,  the theater;  places where guests could select a table, seat or piece of equipment to keep space from others.

Anyone they can identify that has been within 6' of a positive for 15+ minutes can expect to be tested.

How on earth do they identify anyone just by a bad surveillance camera ???? Fair enough if its a member of family or group of friends travelling together . But surely that’s as far as it goes  . .  .

In the dining rooms and specialty restaurants, your name and stateroom number are attached to the table where you are seated (that little slip of paper which the hostess produces when you are seated); that makes it possible to determine who is seated at tables near each other, so if one of those persons tests positive . . . .

On shore excursions they take you names and stateroom numbers on the buses.
The security cameras on the ship are not as 'bad' as you may think, especially in interior spaces.

We were witness to a passenger hitting and pushing another passenger.  Later security called us in to see if we could identify the person who did the hitting from a security video.  The video was a very clear  enough that we could identify the passenger.

I guess we have an expert who has vast knowledge of cruise ship cameras.

If you are referring to me, then I am not an expert by any means but I have seen the quality of some of the camera's and as @jelaynesaid, they are sufficient for facial recognition.

Um, no.  They've upgraded a good bit from the old RS-170 low-res cameras and videotape some years back.  It's not 4K, but it can do the job.

Are people wearing some type of tracing bracelets?

No.  Early on they tried them and they were not reliable and contract tracking people that may have been separated by a wall and glass partition.   They were scrapped just before our September crusie.

It’s far from a grainy photo. I know with 100% confidence, at least on Edge and presumably Apex, they can zoom in on security footage enough to capture a photo  of a persons face that fills an 8.5x11 piece of paper with the clarity of an iPhone photo.

Even so . What are the chances of recognising a face among a 1,0000 passengers , especially if they have no connection with the positive passenger

We had a show in the theater canceled today because the guitar player was in contact with someone who tested positive for Covid. I asked how they do the contact tracing and he pointed to the cameras and he said they do it by camera.

Assuming what he says is correct, it sounds like when someone comes down with Covid they ask where they’ve been and then they review the tape and see who they spent time around and try to identify those passengers or crew and then test them as well.

Don't forget that the ship's security staff has a photo of every passenger.  It's not complicated, and most likely facial recognition software is used, to compare ship's camera photo's to passenger photo's.

Remember that photo you take when you check in or right before you board?  That and the facial recognition software is all it takes.  If they want to know where you are or where you've been, they can do it.
