Smoking in the Casinos?

The Explores casino is a smoking lounge that allows gambling at times. No way to escape the stench. It flows up the staircase to the Promenade deck and also into Schooners.

Dave, we are noticing how much they leave the door to the outside deck on deck 11 open.  The smoking side (port side) is filled with smokers that seem to like to hang right there near the door.  The smoke is coming up through the stairwells all the way up to 13.  It's awful.

This whole ship is smelling like a dirty ashtray.  Agree..does not help with the open stairwell in the middle of the promenade coming up from the middle of the casino...which acts like a chimney, disbursing into the promenade.

Uggg...  🤢

I'm on the Jewel right now.   I can't tell if there is a non-smoking side of the casino.    Smokers are sitting around the casino smoking at machines, but not playing them.  People are smoking in the casino even when it's not open.

We always go to the casino early so for some reason haven't been that close to any smokers.

There's a nice smoking area out by the pool but maybe smokers just go to the closest smoking area.

Hello over there!!  We are right next to you on EX!   Looks like crew ship Rhapsody has pulled in behind you for supply run.

Harmony is on our other side...RCI ship day in St. Maarten!

BTW....Jewel is looking good...must have had a nice fresh new paint job!  🙂

Ahoy!    Yes, the Royal Caribbean ships definitely have a monopoly here in St Maarten today.

The Jewel is definitely a little jewel. 💎

Not a bad idea, maybe that night they could move smoking to the Schooner bar instead. Actually, rotating between two or three venues seems like it would solve the problem.

I don’t think that is a good idea. The casino always smells like smoke even on port days when it is empty. I wouldn’t  want there to be 2 or 3 locations inside that always smelled like smoke. Even if they tried something like you suggested, my guess is the Schooner Bar would be the last place they would let guests smoke since it is the piano bar on RCI ships.

IMO, @Heymarco wasn't being serious.

That's because the casino is a smoking lounge no matter the time of day or whether docked or sailing. Gambling in the casino is only allowed at limited times.

I think he was being serious. On the surface it sounds like a good idea…at least a few nights on a 7 day cruise could be smoke free in the casino.  But then other bars/lounges on the ship would smell like smoke. I probably am not the best person to discuss this issue, since I am very sensitive to smoke and what bothers me might not bother other people. For example, the casino would likely always smell like smoke to me even if it was technically smoke free some nights.

A much better idea is that RC needs to follow Celebrity's lead when it comes to not allowing smoking anywhere inside their ships. I blame RC for this not the smokers.

Or do what I have done and cruise on Celebrity more often. 🙂

It's been a long while since I've been in a place, ship, location that reminds me of bars from a decade ago where they "tried" to have non-smoking areas.  Didn't work and smelled.

Really surprised by this.  Wonder if it will negatively affect those who might gamble in the casino deciding not to?  I may forgo casino play on my May Ovation Cruise.

Save me a nice chunk of money.

Are you allowed to bring one of the battery handheld fans to blow the smoke back at the smokers? 🤷🏼‍♀️ They would get more smoke to inhale and non-smokers would have fresher air to inhale. Win-win……

This is what I do. I am boarding Wonder tomorrow and will have it with me. On Oasis class ships it isn't as much of a problem as at least there is a non smoking section. You can still smell smoke but at least no one is sitting next to you smoking.

On all the other ships I use the fan

Oh. That’s a great idea. We have the usb charged hand fans we bring everywhere. Someone sits down and smokes next to me, just blow the smoke back onto them. Just returning what’s rightfully theirs.

graphicguy,

I like to gamble but not in such smoke smoke-filled as shipboard casinos.

Agree!

Kind of hypocritical to say they want to sail “healthy” and doing all the COVID VACCINATION AND TESTING protocols and then allowing smoking indoors on their ships!

The cruise lines probably will not change the casino policies.  The first cruises after the covid break seemed to have a large percentage of people booking with FCCs and with casino offers.  They and us owe a lot to the first ones that went back on ships and got cruising successfully restarted.

The Wonder Also has a totally Non smoking small casino called the Golden Room….they even have some food in there

but of course the non smokers still complain about this and say the Golden Room is small….At least it’s a non smoking alternative

But, a very small minority of FCC holders would be smokers, I would imagine.

I’ve seen other cruise lines handle the smoking situation much better.  NCL’s latest ships has an enclosed smoking section in the casino so it doesn’t permeate to the rest of the ship.  Celebrity has a policy of smoking being limited to designated outdoor areas.  Those work.

You can’t smoke inside a hotel room.  You can’t smoke inside a public building.  Why are they still allowing it in a cruise ship?  Especially given the cruise lines all say fire is the biggest thing they fear.

"You can’t smoke inside a public building."  You can't smoke inside casinos on land??  All the casino offers are having to compete with land based ones.

Your other points are very taken.  Thanks.

I should amend that.  I can not make that statement for every casino in existence.  But, the ones I've been to lately are all non-smoking.  Haven't been to Vegas in a while, so not sure how they're handling that.

Have been to a few tribe owned casinos.  Those were all non-smoking.

Malls are all non-smoking.  Gov't and office buildings are all non-smoking.  Airports are all non-smoking.  Heck, the amusement parks I've been to since reopening are all outside.  They're all non-smoking, too.

I am a smoker -  I abide by the rules and only smoke in designated spaces.  Additionally, I try my best to be polite understanding that smoking can bother other people.  If I'm at a machine and smoking, I don't create a huge mess.  I don't blow smoke in the direction of someone sitting next to me who doesn't smoke (or someone who does) and finally, I often even ask the person next to me if smoking will bother them if I don't see them smoking.

What I really don't understand... Why does being a non-smoker give some folks (certainly not all) an excuse to be rude?  We all have choices -  If the smoke bothers you that much, choose another cruise line that has casino's and doesn't allow smoking, don't go to the casino, or in the case of the Wonder, go to the non-smoking casino.  I'm using the USB fan as an example.  If I'm sitting at a machine in the smoking section and someone comes and sits next to me blowing a fan at me I'm not going to be happy.  It's rude and inconsiderate for the person smoking.  At the same time, using the casino solely as a smoking parlor is rude also.

What I don't understand is those that tell others to pick another cruise line that doesn't allow smoking in the casino or don't go in the casino. Poor advise and I'll bet (pun intended) RC would disagree with your or others that suggest that. Speaking only for my wife and I, there are a lot more positives that keep us cruising with RC. But we are in the casino only long enough to play our free spins. Also the stench doesn't stay in the casino (depending on the ship class). I blame RC for this problem not the smokers.

I will agree with you about those non smokers that will wave their arms about and cough when around a smoker. The post about using a portable fan in the casino made me laugh. 🤣Ridiculous!!!

Applause.  Agree on all counts.

Not a smoker, but the “fake coughs”, drama looks, etc are rude.  And, if the rules state you can smoke while playing in the casino, them’s the rules.  I don’t like being around the smoke, but if I want to play in the casino, that’s part of the deal.

It’s been so many years (decades?) where there were smoking and non-smoking areas in public spaces, that I forgot what it was like back then.  I remember my parents telling me they took flights that allowed smoking in flight.  Can’t even imagine that.

However, if you require COVID vaccines, negative COVID tests, mask wearing (in the terminals), then it seems a little disingenuous to then turn around and allow smoking anywhere inside while on board.  Can’t do it in hotels.  Can’t do it in an Uber/LYFT/Rental car.  Can’t even do it at the Zoo.

Why allow it inside on a cruise ship?
