Edge-class. What's taking up the missing space?

Off the Edge recently and I realised that the ship is missing quite a few venues that are on other X ships, despite being approximately the same size as the S-class.  Is this indicative of how much space has been eaten up by shifting towards the higher-paying suite classes?  Given the cost of suites, I get that it's a huge profit center for Celebrity and there is a natural desire/fiscal responsibility to maximise that revenue stream.  If not for suite space, where did it all go?

Figures are approximate, of course, and I'm taking some liberties with venue names to try and match them up functionally (i.e. one could argue that the E-class martini bar is really martinis being served at the Passport bar).  Also looking only a non-exclusive venues (thus no Retreat, Luminae, Blu, etc...). And I know that not all S-class ships have Quasar.  And yes, Edge gains the Magic Carpet, but that's next to the ship for all intents and purposes.

Well, Eden takes a good chunk of space.

The retreat, Luminae, fitness center eliminated the forward lounge, Eden...the space did not go anywhere, it was repurposed

Well. Four main dining venues take up a bit more space.  And Edge also has Bistro on 5, I think is the name?  We didn’t eat there so I’m not positive.

Seeing a comparison like this, I am surprised to see the bar count because it didn’t seem that many were “missing” compared to the other classes.

The list is missing a number of Edge Class items such as the very large Grand Plaza lounge (2 decks), The Club (2 decks), what to me is a larger Future Cruise booking area, Fine Cut Steakhouse, Le Grande Bistro, larger Art Gallery, etc.

If you look at the Deck layouts, nothing is ‘empty/unassigned’ on the Edge, and the special areas for the Retreat does take up more than on other Class ships, it isn’t taking up that much area.

Ive cruised twice on Edge prior to the Pandemic when the ship was fully booked and I didn’t find it more crowded at all.

The restaurant is Le Grand Bistro.  It is open for lunch, charge is $20 pp.  We thought it was worth if, delicious food.

Apex does have Craft Social just not Edge (has casino bar instead).  IMO Craft Social is a major improvement on the Casino Bar.

Also glad to see that the Passport Bar (as mentioned earlier here) and Mast bar are making a return on Beyond.

Also the list doesn't capture that Eden also has Eden Restaurant, which is distinct from Eden Cafe.

Among the other missing restaurants that E class has, the comparison of Quasar to The Club and Eden to Ensemble is way off.

The Club and Eden spaces are exponentially larger, especially with Eden having two eateries, a full bar, entertainment space and a full kitchen. The Club functions more similarly to Celebrity Central.

Exactly why I didn't include retreat or fitness center as they're "same space" venues that are on the S-class.  The retreat deck is just the solstice deck.  S-class manages a fitness center and the sky lounge.   Pretty sure that suites ate up the sky lounge entirely on Edge class.

I gave thought to the 4-dining rooms and I think it saves space in the end.  Same # of passengers means the same # of seats for 2 dinner seatings.  And the 4-restaurant strategy eliminates the open space where the upper level is open to the lower.   You could probably fit another restaurant in the open space of the upper deck on S-class.

Grand Plaza is included (Grand Foyer) and it's no larger than on S-class from what I could tell.  Plus, the Grand Foyer on S-class is open all the way up the elevators.  The Club is on the list.

It's the same one that does Le Petitie Chef in the evenings.  i.e. Qsine on S-class & M-class

Doh! I was going though the list before I posted and I KNEW I was forgetting something.

They didn't ADD Craft Social, did they? They just eliminated/renamed the casino bar?  And that's a strange casino design.  Wrong turn off the elevator and there you are.

The spreadsheet was the culmination of several evenings of laying in bed, trying to sleep while counting venues on each ship. Had to make a chart to stop thinking about it. 😄

This document has more specific detail comparing Edge/Apex to Beyond.

BEYOND_Reveal_Comparison_Grid.pdf 179.55 kB · 3 downloads

FYI, my virus protection went nuts over that file.

I think I found the same on the rccl site:

Had no idea the Beyond was getting that much bigger.

I don’t know that it saves space—I think each has some galley space for serving, etc. Regardless, it’s still four venues compared to one on other ships.  If you’re counting that Edge doesn’t have Murano, than you can just as easily say the other classes of ships don’t have three additional dining rooms.

HaHa.  Virus protection means something different to most of us these days.😀
