matymil Posted May 19, 2022 #1 Share Posted May 19, 2022 (edited) I'm buying a camping hammock and was wondering if anyone had used one on a standard carnival balcony before, mainly the Magic. I just saw someone post a quick video of it and it looks super easy to set up however he was on a balcony on a Royal ship. We are on a balcony on the 8th deck. MT_Sea_Cruisers Posted May 19, 2022 #2 Share Posted May 19, 2022 We were on the Carnival Pride a few weeks ago and from our balcony we could look down into the extended balcony below us and noticed they had a hammock hanging.

crazy4themouse Posted May 19, 2022 #4 Share Posted May 19, 2022 I've never had a balcony on Carnival big enough for a hammock. When we used to sail on Royal, we would get one of the standard aft staterooms that has the huuuuuuge balconies (Voyager class) and easily put our camping hammock out there. (It was the kind with its own frame.) You can't put up one that have to tie to something.

I think it is not that they are not allowed on the ships, but rather that they don't want them left set up if not in use, as they can be a hinderance to the crew if they need to clean the balconies, or otherwise access between balconies. So if you set it up, snooze, then dismantle it before heading off to the Lido or dinner, that's OK. AFAIK, at any rate. 3
rogd0262 Posted May 19, 2022 #8 Share Posted May 19, 2022 I had hung it on the standard balcony on Mardi Gras...it's super fun and super easy to do. All you need is to have two permanent "point" where you tie the rope securely. It's not a ban item but it is supposed to be a fire hazard, the same as hanging clothes / towel. It's rarely enforced....as long as you put it away after it is used, there is no bother. 6

We are very respectful of the crew, we'd never leave it up.

We always take at least one camping (rope type hanging ) hammock and we will often take two when we know we are getting a larger balcony aft of the ship. All different cruise employees and many various cruise lines have seen them hanging including officers on the ships. We have been told they ARE NOT A PROHIBITED ITEM, meaning, yes you can take them on and yes you can use them. We have never been told to remove them or that we could not tie them on the balcony. On one occasion a couple of cabin attendants helped us to get it over a bolt that was bit out of our reach to tie it. mz-s Posted January 31 #14 Share Posted January 31 They are allowed on the ships and you can use them as long as you are not damaging anything. You however cannot leave them on your balcony unattended.
Iamthesea Posted January 31 #15 Share Posted January 31 I have read many threads where people ask if they could bring certain odd items on a cruise, but this is a first! I chuckled thinking about going to the trouble of bringing a hammock, but I have to admit that it looks inviting. However, I almost fell out of my chair when I saw where the person posting the hammock photo is from my home town!!! 🤣 1

Aceofdyamond Posted September 7 #19 Share Posted September 7 Possibly it’s not “advertised”, but we’ve even asked and have been told it’s fine to bring a hammock for your balcony. We usually hang two. Theres too many “hall monitors” killing peoples fun. Even the cabin Stewart’s clean around them in the balcony and they have never said a word about them.

It is refreshing to hear about my ex brother-in-law's good hygiene habits around others. And he is stretched so thin these days managing to work as a steward on so many different ships. I'm sure my ex wife is very proud.
bfury Posted September 7 #22 Share Posted September 7 Cruise Hive published an article July 18th 2024 titled " Carnival Cruise Line Shuts Down One Popular Balcony Request". It deals with hammocks and includes comments from John Heald. Bottom line, hammocks are allowed on the ship but the are not allowed to be put up on the balconies because they are a safety hazard. jsglow Posted September 8 #23 Share Posted September 8 Yeah, they would be nice but I can see why Carnival has had to crack down. One of those things where enforcement about leaving them out ONLY when using it became an issue. It's another reason why we can't have nice things. I promise you I'm gonna be POed when the privilege of dropping my backpack in my cabin goes away because too d@mn many of the Blue/Red/Golds think the 1:30 policy doesn't apply to them. DeniseTr Posted September 8 #24 Share Posted September 8 Thanks for this thread! Those balcony chairs are uncomfortable, and my view in them hits right at rail level, so can't even see around it while sitting.
Davechipp74 Posted September 8 #25 Share Posted September 8 You can always book a Virgin cruise, their balconies come with hammocks, and a far better cruise line in my opinion.
