Confused - Wristband and/or Card (to put on lanyard)

Depends on the ship.  Only ships with MSC for Me installed (Seaside-class and Meraviglia-class) can use the wristbands that do anything. The wristbands used on the Fantasia-class (Divina etc) for Yacht Club are purely for visual identification.  All MSC cruise cards on all ships have a hole prepunched for lanyard use.

I read that there is a $5 charge for wristband unless in a YC or Aurea.  Do we need this or can we just use our MSC card on  lanyard?

As Georgia Peaches pointed out, you don't need to get or use the wristband.  With MSC for Me app (on your phone if you download it, you can access things like the schedule of events, menus, etc), you have access to information.  You need your card anytime you leave the ship anyway.  The wristband can get you in your room, or be used when ordering drinks (paying or confirming you drink package), but the card works just as well.

Don't use it.  They can track you!!!

If Covid does pop up again, don't risk your cruise. Doubtful but wouldn't take the chance yet.

During the post-pandemic startup times, wristbands on the Meraviglia were used by everyone without charge. I found it to be no more convenient than using a card. I don’t know why anyone would pay to use one.

Think about ordering from the edge of the adult pool sitting on one of the pool benches and not having to fully get out to get your card. Also, if you are prone to misplacing items or your card then the band which you can keep on you at all times is easier for around the ship.

Exactly. I’m on Princess which uses medallions which I assume are similar technology and I love it. I truly couldn’t care less if they’re tracking me around the ship. If I did something really stupid and ended up going overboard, I’d be really happy that they knew about it immediately. Except, I don’t know if they actually would because it’s not like they’re really staring at these things all the time. I love walking up to my door with my hands full and hearing my lock click open 3 feet away. I like that my room steward knows if I’m in the cabin or not so he’s knocking wanting to make up the room when I’m in the shower. I love ordering my coffee or tea to my state room or my chair in the library. Will I pay $5 for the service on my upcoming Meraviglia and Grandiosa cruises? Probably not.

I guess nobody likes to be tracked but we use all kind of electronic devices every day which enables services to track us..

•  Smartphone

•  Tablet computer

•  Desktop computer

•  Smart Watch

•  Smart TV

•  Interactive devices (Siri, Alexa)

•  Vehicle equipped with GPS

•  Smart Thermostat senses if I am home

•  Electronic door lock in my office

•  Traffic cameras

•  Cameras at/in commercial buildings

 .. just my 2 cents..

You say that now, but several months ago it was a different story.

Would you liked to be taken from your room, put in a quarantined room just because you sat next to someone in the casino? In a show or lounge?

That was what was happening. I personally knew people who had that happen. I was on the ship with them.

I will post a picture of one of the card scan options if not wearing a bracelet

I was just on Princess and found wearing the medallion in a wristband very convenient—the medallions were waterproof so i could swim with it. Are the MSC bracelets waterproof? Does anyone have a pic of the bracelet?

This is from Seaside in 2019.  They had them in the MSC shop on deck 8, but they come with your muster assembly station on them (mine was F) and that shop didn’t have that station, so I had to go to guest services.  It’s all rubber except the metal fastener.  I found the fastener nearly impossible to close, even with two hands so I had to fasten it loosely to slide over my wrist.  Maybe a little Vaseline or lotion would make it work.

The wristbands seem to be the way to go but are they water proof?

They are totally silicone or rubber except for the metal fastener, just like apple or other smart watch bands.  EM

Lol, thinking you have privacy on a cruise ship is naive. There are hundreds of cameras on a cruise ship, you don't think you're not being tracked by them?

You might get a little more privacy without a bracelet but if they want to track where you've been then they'll be able to find out.

I couldn't seem to find a conclusive answer on this, but does the Aurea cabin category allow you to get wristbands for free?  I apologize if I missed this mentioned before.

It's only free for YC

5 euro for other passengers
