Hotel Recommendation for Southampton

Southampton city centre hotels are numbered in blue on the thumbnail map at the bottom of

https://www.londontoolkit.com/travel/southampton_accommodation.htm

Most city centre hotels are quite bland chain hotels, but there are none that I'd caution against.

1 / 2 / 3 are convenient to the rail and coach stations and tolerably convenient to Mayflower and City cruise terminals, and the new Horizons cruise terminal (between those two cruise terminals but not yet on that map).

Location is "OK" but not ideal for restaurants, pubs, shops etc

4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 16 are convenient to City Cruise Terminal, the shopping centre (yellow C & D) and the West Quay entertainment complex of modern national & international chain brands  (to the right of blue 16)

Holiday Inn (5) , Herbert Walker Avenue is right by the gate to City Cruise Terminal, rooms at the back overlook the ship. (The city's Hol Inn Express' are way out on the city limits).

Premier Inn is the UKs biggest & best budget chain, the West Quay one (4) is very convenient.

Travelodge is also a UK budget chain, IMHO nowhere near as good as Premier Inn.

Moxy is a new and quirky Marriott brand.

5 / 6 / 7 / 8 / 10 / 11 are convenient to the more-individual locally-owned pubs & restaurants around yellow G,  the old town & the waterfront.

Ennio's, Pig-in-the-Wall, and White Star Tavern (not shown), are bijou hotels in historic buildings. Mercure Dolphin is a historic coaching inn, which has its advantages & disadvantages

The West Quay complex and old town are only a 5 to 10 minute walk from each-other.

12 / 13 / 14 aren't particularly convenient to the city centre or cruise berths.

15 is very convenient to Ocean cruise terminal, only two minutes walk from the pubs and restaurants of Oxford Street and five minutes from old town

9 is the city centre's only 5-star hotel. Pleasant waterfront location, not convenient for anywhere - but if you've got 5-star money I guess a few short taxi rides won't break your bank. 😏

Southampton old town was heavily blitzed during World War 11, the city walls remain but within the walls the historic buildings stand cheek-by-jowl with some pretty awful post-war buildings.

I heartily agree with The White Star Tavern!  We stayed last night in the Titanic suite. It is so spacious and comfortable!  We had an English roast dinner at the restaurant yesterday afternoon (discounted 10% because we were staying at the Tavern. It was a fantastic meal — everything you can think of for a roast dinner, including Yorkshire pudding. Beautiful!

The staff are all so friendly and welcoming. The reasonable room rate included an amazing hot breakfast, served to you, as much as you’d like.
The room was the best we have had in Southampton. We have stayed other places. This is hospitality at its best.

We’d already booked no 9. Harbour hotel as we like the chain but will look at Moxy & see if Dh can use his points. Also look of Pig in the wall. Decisions decisions!

We booked Moxie using points. Place looked good and convenient to restaurants.

Do you know if the Premier Inn rooms have safes in them? Couldn't find anything on their website, and no email to send questions to.
