Weed Problem on Carnival Ships

Their current position isn't working. So they need to do something. Raise prices so the potheads don't cruise would be an easy way to solve the problem.

Seriously? The computer/phone you are typing on and the programming code that allows all this to happen is thanks to pot heads lol. It's huge in tech, they quit testing for it years ago because they kept losing too many of the best and brightest. In the early days, it was more than pot/booze, you don't stay up doing marathon coding sessions on coffee alone 😁. Things have mellowed since the early days and the office kegs and bars are largely gone but the herbalism is still very much a thing and these folks make bank and aren't low income. That's laughable.

Thanks for the link.

I still prefer edibles though

More people are making the switch, or a least to vape pens at min, no sense in smoking flowers and harming your lungs and walk around smelling funky lol. Hopefully, more cruisers do too, it will happen, I don't know many folks who smoke regular cigarettes anymore even, most have switched to vaping for the same reasons, stench and lungs (and costs). I suspect we'll hear less and less about this problem as time marches on; plus, Carnival is cracking down on the cabin/balcony herb smoking IMO, and from what I've observed.

If Carnival really wants to cash in on this, they should start selling big ole bags of Doritos for about $15 each, late nights at all the bars (and heck, even the late night Pizza Plus station).

Little Debi snack cakes, always hits the spot after a bowl.

The people that smoke pot in a Carnival interior room’s bathroom are not big wigs at Alphabet or Amazon by and large. I’d be willing to take that to the bank.

You’re right! It’s really not. And actually, if you’re purchasing legally, the taxes you pay on it is extremely high. People partaking in legal marijuana aren’t poor bums.

No such thing as legal marijuana on a cruise

Not a hint of such on the Valor or Glory recently.  Security was ever present.  Years ago, cruise line security was very unobtrusive.  These folks were all over and had visibly been to the gym.  I just hope getting tossed off the ship in random foreign ports does not become a TikTok thing like eating Tide pods.

was on the Glory Sept 4 to Sept 12, smell was everywhere, especially when we left Jamica Mon.

Have only smelled it once. Didn’t care. Still don’t. Would love to legally do so, but alas, they prefer drunks over “altered” peeps. My mother in law used to say, I suppose you were out there getting altered?!  Why do you do that?  We’d say, want to try it? She’d say no and we’d say, then you’ll never know why!  Agree that edibles are the only way to fly.  Still not on a cruise, the consequences could be massive. Ask Brittney (Fool) Griner. Sheeeezzzzz

Ironic this came up here today.  I just read about a study that showed a correlation between pot use and heart attacks in women below the age of 35.

It’s everywhere these days, And disgusting.  We already avoid going anywhere near the casino to not have to smell the tobacco.  We’ll be very sad if we can’t avoid breathing in pot smoke.

We did report a neighbor smoking on a balcony next door.  Security came immediately and gave them a talking to.  No more balcony smoking.  Guest services thanked us for calling and asked us to call again if it continued because it was a fire hazard. Assuming pot smoking is just as much of a fire hazard, I’m be very surprised if it wasn’t taken seriously for this reason alone.

That's one of the risks. Even if Carnival ignores your weed, the authorities in any port you visit have the right to come on the ship with drug dogs.

Quoted wrong post. Meant to quote lilchuckie's story about pax getting caught in Bermuda.

How so?  You don't think people who can legally purchase weed in their home state may be more likely to bring it onboard?

Just because the state the person lives in has decided to not respect federal law does not mean it's legal.

Personally I have never used the whaky tobacy.  It is now legal in a number of states so to expect it not to show up on the ship is wishful thinking.  It is easy to sneak aboard and now getting widespread enough that security is not able to stop it.  I certainly know the smell and while not pleasant it is is up there with tolerance to cigarette smoke.  I don't like either one.  I would rather be with some weed tokers than with a bunch of inebriated mostly males.

The federal government while having laws prohibiting marijuana is now looking the other way as states allow it openly.  Some states and local authorities are doing the same.  Our county/city in this bright red state is now issuing tickets to those caught with it and sent on their way to appear in court later to pay a fine.  Expect cruise lines like Carnival to join the group.

they need to do something

If smoking is suspected in the cabin then Carnival should leave a letter in the cabin reminding the guest that smoking in unauthorized areas is subject to a fine.

If smoking is suspected a 2nd time in that cabin I would send the guest a letter post cruise with a bill. If the bill isn't paid in 60 days then the person(s) go on the no sail list and are not welcome on any Carnival ship.

Carnival would open itself up to many US legal issues if they tried that.

Carnival ships are not US flagged. They have autonomy in choosing what to enforce.

Just got off a Carnival Cruise ship. Only smelled the marijuana one time as I was sitting next to a medical marijuana patient. When we got off a the various ports the smell was definitely in the air. However, I did witness a few people that had a bit way too much to drink and were acting very disorderly.

I saw/smelled a lot more weed on the ships back when you could still smoke on the balcony. On some cruises, "neighbors" would offer joints over the divider and smoke weed and cigs for the whole cruise (LOL)..  This was all on RCL cruises.  I had never sailed Carnival back then.

The problem is that due to international conventions like the STCW and MLC, which all signatory nations pass into law based on the conventions, ships are prohibited from having drug use onboard.  THC is not allowed on any ships, even those flagged in Holland (HAL), where marijuana and CBD products are legal.  Ships are considered a separate case from the general population.  Carnival does not have "autonomy" in choosing what to enforce, but it is the "flag state's" laws that would be enforced, not "port states" like the US.  The Captain is the legal representative of the flag state onboard, and therefore he can decide to enforce the law or not, but then must assume responsibility if the flag state disagrees with his decision.

I was actually witness to Carnival enforcement of the no smoking policy on our cruise from Galveston. I meant to make a post about it. Our next door neighbor was smoking weed on the balcony making it unusable for anyone who didn't want to smell it. Personally , I don't care about people smoking whatever they want to smoke. I'm the only one of my friends who does not because I grew up with my grandma smoking cigarettes in the house and hated the smell. Still do but it's someone's own personal choice.

Anyway, so it was such a heavy amount of smoke and smell that none of the surrounding cabins could use their balconies. We ended up calling guest service as well as a few others. It stopped for a few hours and also we could hear is family arguing with him to stop doing it before and after security came. Then he did it again and security cane again. Wash rinse repeat 3 more times.

So at the end of the cruise, we are in our room last minute packing and could hear commotion next door. The man received a letter from Carnival and his end of cruise bill that they give everyone and started screaming that he wasn't paying Carnival anything. He had been billed $500 for the smoking and could not leave the ship until it was paid. He family refused to help. He kept saying he didn't have anymore money. Security was at the door when we left our room.

He got off cheap.  Hopefully he got to meet Officer Puppers.
