Weed Problem on Carnival Ships

Just got off 5 day cruise on Carnival Sunrise and couldn’t believe the amount of weed on the ship. You smelled it in hallways, casino, lido decks etc. last three cruises I have taken this year , the smell of weed throughout the ship is getting worse, reminds me of when I am in Vegas. Diamond member , 40 cruises on Carnival, but it’s getting old, suppose to be against rules but staff is turning  their heads . If it continues I will look elsewhere to cruise or take vacations, just retired and had planned to cruise monthly on carnival. Got to love it, if I bring a bottle of soda with me they confiscate it , yet so many passengers bring weed on and no problem. But on the good side no roving teen groups getting into brawls like on my previous two carnival cruises.

Not a hint of such on the Valor or Glory recently.  Security was ever present.  Years ago, cruise line security was very unobtrusive.  These folks were all over and had visibly been to the gym.  I just hope getting tossed off the ship in random foreign ports does not become a TikTok thing like eating Tide pods.

I am an avid consumer of cannibis, admittedly. However, I refrain from smoking onboard any ship out of respect for others and the rules. Many do not have the same self-restraint. It is quite easy to smuggle small amounts aboard for personal consumption, and the smell is very obnoxious for the non-consumer. One also has to consider the type of cruiser that carnival attracts. Often that demographic coincides with a culture that is more apt to be marijuana friendly.

How each ship handles these types of rule breakers is truly a difficult task.

I know the smell because there’s a pancake restaurant close to my work…not a regional one…and their employees like to take breaks in our stairwell…and I dont take the elevator so I get to smell it. I’ve never smelled that on a carnival ship.

Maybe you're not smelling weed. :classic_ohmy:

Back in my college days in the 70s I probably went through a literal ton of that stuff. Haven't touched it since job interviews started in the last semester; same time I got my hair cut. The smell doesn't bother me at all. I find it nostalgic.

Now the only thing I smoke is tobacco. I occasionally have to laugh at myself when I get a bit peeved that I get treated like a criminal for smoking a cigarette while everyone, crew and passengers alike, ignore the clouds of weed smoke.

Honestly though. I feel like the problem is that it’s legal in several states and easy to buy now. I live in Illinois and I could 100% walk into a dispensary tomorrow and buy whatever I wanted.
I agree though, it is still illegal federally and Carnival should be enforcing the same federal laws. But it seems like they’re way more worried about catching smuggled alcohol or a banned electronic in your luggage than weed.

We noticed it in many places on the Freedom last week. That ship smelled bad enough with whatever sewage issue they have. The weed smell added to it was enough to make me gag in some areas. We’re pretty hesitant about booking Carnival in the future, and we definitely would never sail on that ship again.
If people would just smoke everything- weed, tobacco, cigars, whatever-  in the smoking sections, that would be so much better.  But people were smoking weed and cigarettes in their rooms all over that ship and staff didn’t seem to address it.

So far I have only smelled it on open decks (probably from blowing up from balconies). I have not smelled it in corridors or casino on a cruise.

Marijuana is certainly becoming more socially acceptable seemingly by the day. By the grace of God I don't smoke anything anymore - and don't plan to - gave up Nicotine about a year ago after over 10 years of being hooked. I'm not going back.

I know it's against the rules and that should be enough for anybody. And I think part of why people are smelling it in the hallways is people are sneaking a smoke in their bathrooms. So maybe Carnival should treat marijuana like cigars. Smoke only in open deck smoking area. It's happening anyway so they might as well let people be open about it. My opinion!

Carnival would open itself up to many US legal issues if they tried that.

Their current position isn't working. So they need to do something. Raise prices so the potheads don't cruise would be an easy way to solve the problem.

We would catch a whiff every once in a while while sitting out on the balcony.

The biggest problem I had with these people was not the smell but the fact that smoking is specifically prohibited is most areas of the ship.  That mean ALL smoking... tobacco and marijuana.  All this time and effort has been spent to educate smokers on where they can smoke and for the most part they comply.  Pot smokers, OTOH, seem to think 'no smoking' rules do not seem to apply.

Edit to add.. Vaping users seem to fall in the same category (IMO) as pot smokers in terms of following no smoking rules.

I’m a medical marijuana patient in Florida, so I can believe it. You’d probably be surprised at the amount of retirees in the dispensaries. It’s not just young, broke people who are choosing to make dumb decisions and bring the smelliest method of consumption for their medicine on board.

EDIT: Not excusing it. It smells bad. People need to use more discretion and stop being inconsiderate tools.

Lol pot is not cheap! Everyone I know who partakes is very financially stable.

I'm, not surprised at the number of retirees.

Many of us grew up in the sixties and seventies.  Pot was the thing among certain groups of our classmates.

I didn't smell as much pot in 2019 when cruises were generally around $100 per person per day for an inside or more.

You’re right! It’s really not. And actually, if you’re purchasing legally, the taxes you pay on it is extremely high. People partaking in legal marijuana aren’t poor bums.
