Tsi2quick Posted July 6, 2023 #1 Share Posted July 6, 2023 Never flown into or out of Boston or cruised into or out of Boston. For those familiar and who've done this before, what's the earliest you'd book a flight home? Looking a map it seems the airport is very nearby but also given traffic and other factors I'm sure it can be deceiving. I'm responsible for 5 of us getting home so just trying to get a feel for what flight times I should shoot for! Thanks in advance!
Nitemare Posted July 6, 2023 #2 Share Posted July 6, 2023 Depends on what time your ship gets in and the day of the week. There is a tunnel to pass through to get to the airport and it carries lots of traffic on weekdays
cruiserking Posted July 6, 2023 #3 Share Posted July 6, 2023 I would suggest booking a return flight for noon or later. Sure, you might make an earlier departure but, it's not uncommon to experience delays debarking, collecting your luggage. Save yourself the stress and schedule for a time you can easily make. Tsi2quick Posted July 8, 2023 Author #4 Share Posted July 8, 2023 We return on a Sunday so hopefully the commuter traffic wouldn't be that bad.

CruiserBruce Posted July 10, 2023 #6 Share Posted July 10, 2023 The other issue is poor cab coverage out at the port. I would definitely use ship's transfers in Boston.

This could be good advice, depending on price. I've yet to see a cruise transfer to the airport that wasn't crazy priced for a couple. And worse for a larger party. But taxi coverage and logistics are so bad at Boston.

We sail out of there this September, but our cruise ends in Montreal.
Tsi2quick Posted July 11, 2023 Author #11 Share Posted July 11, 2023 Thanks for the discussion here. Maybe a 1pm flight home would be best. Give time in case there's a cluster at the port or airport.
dls1203 Posted July 11, 2023 #12 Share Posted July 11, 2023 I got an email from Holland America that stated that there was bad construction in Boston and it could delay getting to/from the airport. I am not flying in the day of the cruise or into Boston as I am traveling with friends that live in New England and with are taking a private shuttle to the Cruise port but they are saying 2.5 hours to the cruise port and is less then 90 miles. That works out to 36 mph average speed - which in and near Boston is about the best you can expect.
Cruzinnana47 Posted July 14, 2023 #14 Share Posted July 14, 2023 Just an FYI...the Sumner Tunnel in Boston, one of the main tunnels leading in to Logan Airport has been closed from July 5 to Aug. 31 for long overdue repairs. This has been causing massive delays in traffic as well as major headaches for commuters, especially those who need to get to and from the airport. I agree with others who've suggested a later pm flight out. Booking an early departure from Logan this summer would not a good idea, IMO. We live what less than 50 mi. from Boston and departing in late Aug. on a cruise from Boston but this time going to allow at least 2-3 hours for the ride to the terminal. Your information is correct…getting from Boston to Logan is a nightmare and there is no guarantee that they’ll be done by August 31. The quickest way in and out of Logan is using the C1 from Revere. For those trying to get into or out of Boston i think there might still be a water shuttle. There’s also a water shuttle from the Encore Casino in Everett…which is also a great hotel…And an easy ride to Logan.
Traveling Library Posted July 16, 2023 #16 Share Posted July 16, 2023 The Sumner Tunnel runs one way from East Boston/Logan Airport and points north of Boston into the city. All traffic from Logan is directed to the Ted Williams Tunnel which runs two ways. The Ted is getting backed up into the city. The Ted is is route you will take to the port. From the port to Logan you will also take The Ted. Traffic to the airport via The Ted is typical city traffic and doesn’t seem to be backing up (that’s because the other tunnel from the city to East Boston is open). So if you are flying in on the day the cruise leaves be prepared for delays.
Julma Posted July 19, 2023 #17 Share Posted July 19, 2023 On a Sunday, early morning, you'll have a quick ride to the airport. It's much easier to get to the airport from the Seaport than it is getting to the Seaport from the airport. Leaving yourself 30 minutes in commute should be plenty. I live in the Seaport and it has never taken me more than 30 minutes to get to the airport, even in rush hour traffic.
