I would have to see the ship and the surrounding area to know precisely. Certainly, the pool, plus deck activities and the bar immediately adjacent. It may be easy to understand by analogy. Chairs at casino tables are for casino activities. You cannot throw a towel on a blackjack chair and say "no one sit here, I'll be back in 30 minutes to play, I'm going to eat." Chairs in theaters are for theater activities. You can't put your purse there at 5 and say "I'm going to eat, no one take this chair." Chairs in the MDR are for MDR activities. You can't put your book there at 5 and tell the staff "don't seat anyone here I'll be back." Etc etc etc. Really seems quite simple and self-evident to me. donaldsc Posted August 4, 2023 #78 Share Posted August 4, 2023 How about this approach. You put something like parking meters on each lounge. When you get to the pool you can get a free lounge token from the pool attendant for a defined time to be no longer than 1 hour. You put the token onto the meter to indicate that the lounge is occupied for 1 hour. You are allowed to occupy the lounge for longer than 1 hour but you have to get up to get another token. I am obviously being facetious - or am I? The only possible problem that I can see is that Princess being Princess they will soon start charging for the pool tokens. Not the best analogies. In the casino a player can leave a stack of chips where they are playing and dealer will hold spot. Looks like Princess is now reserving chairs in theaters for certain guests whether they show up or not. We do Reserve Class dining and there is always a chair waiting for us. Often the same chairs every night. Also, let's not even talk about your own special lounger in the Sanctuary. It does happen.

DON I wonder whether there can be some kind of guaranteed chair slotted system for every paid passenger. I don't know enough about the number of passengers (or cabins, better) divided by the number of chairs and the number of daylight hours. But if the math works out, before you even get on a cruise you could know that you have poolside chair 21-A from 2-3 on Wednesday. If you don't want it you can give it up. You should only be able to keep your lounge chair when you are using the lounge chair for activities connected with the lounge chair (e.g. in the pool or getting a drink at the nearby bar). Sorry, but this makes no sense to me. People who sit by the pool all day still have to use the bathroom and eat. I can most certainly go anywhere on the ship and get food and be back to my chair in 30 minutes. 2

How far are you willing to take this? Can I not find a spot in a corner and sit and read a book all day as long as I use it. Can I not sit in front of the same game in the casino as long as I use it? If you want to sit in the piazza all day and watch whatever entertainment wonders by, why can't you? The reason the pool deck gets the only attention is that there are simply not enough chairs for everyone who might want one. But if someone claims a chair and uses it, then what is wrong with that exactly? Now, do I see on every cruise people who put stuff on chairs and rarely use them, sure. The only answer to your plan is for princess to institute a rotating schedule to use chairs. But what if I have a morning time, and it's cloudy? Perhaps Princess should simply have their deck attendants monitor chairs at least some, and proactively remove items when their are people looking for a chair if they have deemed that 30 minutes or more has passed. 1

I am just talking about basic human decency. (non cruise) I am not going to linger at a restaurant table when others are waiting for a table. That's rude. I eat, I pay, I'm gone. We have a home association pool. I am not going to take a lounger all day if others are waiting for one. That's rude. I'll enjoy for a reasonable time (2-3 hours) then go home. Drive throughs make you pull forward if you have to wait for your food, so as not to make others wait on you. Basically, any scarce resource, where there are others also waiting on that resource, it's rude to use it for more than a reasonable time. All day on a crowded cruise ship is more than a reasonable time. If no one else is waiting, I don't care if you sit there 24/7.

voljeep Posted August 4, 2023 #91 Share Posted August 4, 2023 the problem is the people who get up at 6am, and stake out five or six 'prime pool side' loungers, get back around 8 or so - a couple or so. then around 10 or so, another couple show up, the finallly around 2 or so, the remaining couple show up for the first time that day 7

I watch these rude people ‘staging’ their chairs. They put out towels, ruffle them up to look used, add a pair of sunglasses, open up book. I saw a couple once set up six beds, stand back and the husband said to the wife ‘perfect, I think we licked it’. If it would not have been so sad, I think I would have laughed out loud, it was like they had just set up an art exhibition. They took a photograph before they disappeared so that another of their group who came by about an hour later would know what to look for, the couple returned about another 45 minutes later. By that time people were struggling to find beds, we were happy to give up ours. NB: I did not openly challenge them, but they must have felt the unhappy eyes that were laid upon them, or perhaps not, as they were in their own little selfish world, that actually took a lot of effort and planning.

If I get to a good spot on the beach before someone else and I use it all day, should I not be able to keep it all day and they have to find another spot? And like you, I don't dawdle at a restaurant, or on the ship for that matter. When I go in for the day, I remove my towel and take it to the dirty towel bin. Most people just leave them.

Others should be able to use them. I suppose if I wanted to claim a chair just to make it convenient for when I actually wanted to use it, I could simply show up every 30 minutes to reassert my claim. That wouldn't be nice, but technically within the rules. Anyway, I hope everyone takes this as a friendly discussion. Bemidji Ty Posted August 4, 2023 #97 Share Posted August 4, 2023 (edited) A few cruises back, I witnessed a large family reserve 2 (two) loungers per person - one in the sun and one in the shade. When they were in the sun, if someone asked nearby cruisers about the shady lounges, they would reply, "Those are ours!" Eventually, someone got a staff member who had a discussion with to the entitled folks and stopped this for a while. The only part I was able to hear was that they were on vacation and had paid for these loungers. Personally, I prefer a quieter, less busy and less dramatic environment with an ocean view. Cheers.
