Who would you say is X target demographic?

Just chiming in...

I would say X's target is Gen X and older Millennials.  Depending on the time of year and itinerary, it may sway older, but not like Princess.

I'm in my mid-30s and love X; I loved X in my 20s.  It's hip but still has what someone is looking for in traditional cruising.  (If you're at all into flying, X is like Virgin Atlantic and Princess is like British Airways.)  Their ships are more contemporary; they have refurbished their old fleet to reflect the times, unlike Princess' Grand Class ships while still in good condition feel dated.  I much prefer the performers and shows on X; it's more my genre.  Post-pandemic, the front line crew on X  that interact with passengers is more put together--or they know how to fake it until they make it.  The post-pandemic crew on Princess seem overworked and unsure of what they are doing.  Pre-pandemic, their crews were on par with each other.  I think X is really deserving of the accolade that they recently received from Forbes.

I agree that X's prices post-restart period are becoming outrageous.  If you want to go on longer cruises and/or more cruises Princess still takes the cake, but there is a little bit of sacrificing to do.  For us, X is now a treat, and Princess is everyday fare.  Still recommend X for Galapagos cruises, regardless of price.

While Princess doesn't have butlers we found the suite lovely, especially the aft corner ones.

We found the food very comparable to Celebrity and in the case of the breakfast in the Specialty Restaurant light years above Celebrity's Luminae.  Peaceful, elegant and willing to get you anything you want if it's on the ship.

The concierge lounge is no Michael's or Retreat Lounge but still has a happy hour with drinks and other nice touches.

So what did you find just "OK"  was it anything more than the food or lack of what a butler provides on X?

We have sailed mostly Celebrity in the past, now  booked on the Sky for 2024 at a MUCH more reasonable price than X.

Sorry you didn't find it meeting your expectations.

The boarding for Celebrity was more chaotic (that’s more about the terminal than the cruise-line itself)

I have encountered chaos & calm on both lines depending when & where we sailed.

We were able to drop off our luggage in our cabin closet and head for lunch in the dining room on Princess.  Celebrity did not have this option.

We were able to drop our carry ons on Celebrity but not Princess so confused here.

The cabins on Celebrity kick butt but I do love the open closet design on Princess.  The beds are also somewhat more comfortable on Princess.

Agree with both of these; mattress toppers a must on Celebrity.

The Crown Grill was phenomenal and half the price of Murano on Celebrity.

Crown Grill is $39pp; Murano $50pp so not quite. (more now? but not $80)

Our Crown Grill experience was sad & Murano exceptional, so again, can vary.

I can honestly say, I really missed the medallion app and the medallion.

LOVE Medallion. HATE Princess app for looking at activities. Celebrity's is much more user friendly. Too easy to miss things. going up & down as well as sideways on Princess.

There was really no place to get food midday on Celebrity unless you went to the Lido deck.

Other than a snack at Al Bacio, true.

The coffee drinks at Cafe Al Bacio on Celebrity was probably the absolute BEST I’ve ever had!

I find International Cafe & Cafe Al Bacio similar; not enough difference to note.

We absolutely love the nonsmoking in the casino on Celebrity! \\

AGREE!!

The biggest difference was the entertainment, activities and events.  We met several others that did the same side by side cruises and the consensus was, Celebrity was just kind of boring.  There was always something fun to participate in on Princess.  And if you felt like just relaxing with some quiet time, there was that, too!

This I don't understand.

Trivia, game shows, pool games, musicians, shows, etc. all available on both Celebrity & Princess.

OK...long time Princess & Celebrity cruiser here. Other lines too, but in 20 years these we have sailed the most. For me, slight edge of Celebrity over Princess.

I had to make a couple corrections to your comments that aren't true, as well as my thoughts--proving that depending on when & where, experiences can vary.

Regarding food; we find Princess & Celebrity to be fairly comparable in MDR & buffet. (tho step up on Celebrity Eclass) We have not been happy w/ Princess specialty dining but LOVE Celebrity specialty dining.

One note--have you tried Celebrity Eclass ships? (Apex, Ascent, Beyond & Edge).

When we tried Celebrity after 5 Princess cruises, we felt service & food were a small step above other lines, including Princess.

But EClass? This is a step above other ships on Celebrity, IMO.

(I will say, that by & large we find service excellent on all ships we have sailed; the occasional crew member not so much, but it is rare & situational)

I agree with this 100% on Eclass. (I am Gen X)

I find Princess & older Celebrity ships to be VERY similar in "feel"

But I find shows on Princess & other older Celebrity ships to be fairly "meh".

After Eclass shows & Broadway level shows on NCL & RCCL, they feel very "high school"-esque.

Day Two (cont): We tended to eat most meals in the Reserve section of Skagway restaurant, apart from breakfast, which was in Sabatini's for suite guests. I found the breakfast menu to be lacking in descriptions and, even though people say you cn get anything if it's on the ship, you'd never know it from the written choices. Apart from an over-active waiter, who went over the top to be funny and/or efficient, service was excellent and food was always hot when it was served (and when it was meant to be)! The menu was not excessive, but there was enough to choose from. There was a 'secret' item on the menu each night, which I think was for the Reserve. This night, it was lobster thermidor and they brought me two tails.

Overall, we found enough to entertain us with some nice rest breaks in between. When I realized that I had loaded up with T-shirts and hadn't brought a coat, a quick visit to the on-board store resolved that issue. For $38.50, I found a jacket that did the trick and the price was similar to the stores onshore.

Day Three: Ketchikan.

Our first port greeted us with rain, but it didn't dampen anyone's spirits! Our excursion was a boat trip to the Misty Fjords. I was able to take the scooter to the boat and they moved it somewhere safe for the trip. It's a fair journey by boat to the fjords, by my gosh, was it worth it! The boat staff were great and allowed us onto the bow when there was something to see (it was closed while traveling). The trip there was uneventful and gave us a chance to chat with our fellow guests, who were from the Noordam, so we never saw them again. They served us clam chowder and/or vegan chili, the latter of which I avoided! There was hot tea, coffee and other basic drinks available and soda and adult beverages were available at extra cost. On the return, we were given a small piece of sockeye salmon on a Ritz cracker.

The evening was our pre-arranged 360 dinner. We were asked not to give details away, but the overall experience was awesome (for Celebrity guests, think Le Petit Chef on steroids)! The food was, in my opinion, just OK.

The menu is lean but, truly, they will get you anything you ask for if it's on the ship. Sorry you didn't get to take advantage of it.

Sorry to disagree with a couple of posters that state the "E" class on Celebrity is much better than S & M classes.  We found E class lacking in most things except in the theater, which is excellent as are the shows.

Is that my fault or the fault of the ship/staff? Even the so-called 'secret menu' in the Reserve restaurant was more stumbled upon. I'm just calling it as I see it.

I am trying to avoid the 'fanboy' aspect and compare the two lines equally according to experience.

Day Four: Juneau:

Last time in Juneau, we were on the bus going to the salmon bake when my DW said 'We'll probably never be here again, so let's forfeit the salmon in favor of a float plane flight. Best.Decision.Ever.

This trip, we made our minds up to go the salmon bake, so we did. What can be wrong with Alderwood baked salmon and beef ribs - all you can eat! They had a guitarist near the seating area who was pretty good and a creek running from a gorgeous waterfall. The creek was chock-full of sockeye salmon.

Unexpectedly, I was able to take the scooter, which made the trip much more enjoyable.

Your depiction of the post-pandemic crew situation was worded so well. Pre-pandemic, each cruise line had their own dedicated crew, and that resulted in uniformed service. Post-pandemic, every cruise line took what they could get, and that has resulted in a mish mash experience. For instance, I now see Celebrity style desserts in the IC on Princess. A bartender didn’t know what I meant by a Lava Flow despite having ordered them for years on Princess and said on his previous ship on Royal Caribbean, they called it a Miami Vice. Several cruise directions came from Celebrity and are now on Princess. The attitudes of many are different because they’re used to different expectations. It’s just an overall different experience.

I also have to agree that Celebrity’s post-pandemic crew acts more put-together.

I miss the old days, but having done 2 Princess cruises and 1 Celebrity cruise this year, Princess still remains my favorite.

Interesting take … and I know some cruises can just vary greatly even on the same ship, not even just the same line.
We recently cruised on etc Diamond Princess and didn’t like that ship at all.  We were highly impressed with their entertainment and the food was great.  The service, with a couple exceptions,  was awful and their wine choices .. just the worst.  Looks like both lines have cut back on their wine selections.  The difference here was Celebrity always serves their wine in really nice glasses.  Even a cheap wine tastes better if in a good wine glass.
We’ve never sailed on an Edge class ship and are probably unlikely to do so as, we mainly cruise from the west coast only.
We’ve always been able to drop off our carry on luggage in our cabin on Princess and never on Celebrity, including this last cruise. As far as the chaos at the pier, it was the same area that we just embarked at for the Princess cruise, just a different terminal.  There was no priority line or waiting area as there was with Princess.  Just one big blob of passengers pushing and shoving.  We just waited patiently for it to disperse.  No use in getting tangled in the chaos.
I would say that on Celebrity, I was a bit surprised by the lack of one even one shrimp dish in the buffet.  I ordered it in the MDR one day for lunch and it wasn’t great.  I’m sure it was just a one off .. but we didn’t return to the MDR after that.  We are not big eaters at dinner time so it wasn’t as though we didn’t go back there to give it another try because of that, though.
I would say our biggest disappointment was the lack of activities during the day while onboard.  On Princess, I know they’ve done their best to have several options of something to do throughout the day.  You can do as much or as little as you’d like.
The Celebrity wasn’t a bad cruise, just not what I remember from before the pandemic.  Well, nothing really is but, I do feel like Princess really stepped up their game after the restart.

Is there a bit of a disconnect between @Gracie115 and @Guindalf?

In reading the above posts, it sounds like @Gracie115 cruised in a Full Suite and was able to have breakfast in one of the specialty restaurants (Sabatini's, perhaps?), and it is in this venue that she could "get you anything you want if it's on the ship."

It sounds like @Guindalf was in a Reserve Class Mini Suite, which gave him access to the Reserve Dining Room--not the specialty restaurant breakfast.  If I am mistaken, the breakfast menu that is handed to guests in the "standard" dining room, the reserve class dining room and the specialty restaurant is the same, and, yes, it looks pretty minimal.  In the specialty restaurant, however, guests can feel free to make off-menu requests, and the staff will do their best to honor them.  This is not the case in the other venues.

@Guindalf was eating breakfast in Sabatini's for suite guests - see the extract of his post that I copied above. The breakfast menu in the suite dining room is completely different from the one in the standard and Reserve MDR.

Thanks for the clarification, @NavyVeteran.  I guess I never read the Sabatini's breakfast menu that closely, and I guess my recollection is faulty.

@Guindalf, the reason we like Princess so much is because of their itineraries, and their funny cruise directors and entertainment team. For example, right before the shutdown we went on a 25-day Island Princess cruise from Ft Lauderdale through the Panama Canal and on to Easter Island before flying back home from Santiago, Chile. Here's a 36-day cruise that goes from New York to Sydney by way of Easter Island. It's pretty booked up right now, as it's part of a world cruise, but it gives you a taste of some of the longer cruises Princess offers.

Cruise Details - 36-Day World Cruise Segment - New York to Sydney - Princess Cruises

We're currently booked on a 30-day B2B RT Santiago, Chile this coming January that includes spending 4 days cruising around the Antarctica Peninsula.

Cruise Details - 16-Day Antarctica & Cape Horn - Princess Cruises

Cruise Details - 14-Day Cape Horn & Strait of Magellan - Princess Cruises

Here's another Princess cruise that is a favorite of many Princess cruisers who have the time.

Cruise Details - 32-Day South Pacific Islands & Hawaii - Princess Cruises

This one is a cool cruise if you have never been to Brazil that winds up in Ft Lauderdale.

Cruise Details - 18-Day Brazilian Adventure - Princess Cruises

I know I keep mentioning Princess' unique longer itineraries. I just thought I'd post a few for you just in case you were unaware.

I don't think there's a disconnect between myself and @Gracie115 though.

Neither do I!!!🙂 Very Interested in your experience, we have been on 5 Princess cruises all on the same class of ship. I agree with you about the Crown Grill, in fact after our first experience there on embarkation night we changed our reservation to later in the cruise, it was too chaotic the first night and the food just OK.  Even changing to later didn't improve much and our last cruise we just switched our reservation to Sabatini's which we like much more for both breakfast and dinner.

We haven't had the chance to do a 360 dinner, but imagine it is wonderful.  On the Regal we did a Winemakers dinner which was excellent, probably our best meal on Princess.  Did you have a chance to do that?

I hope you were able to enjoy Alaska, no matter the ship.  We did ours on an old HAL ship several years ago which was really sub par but Alaska was so amazing it didn't matter.

I agree that some itineraries are unique, and for those, I would choose that first and the ship/line second every time. However, for the cruise in question, the destination was one of the most amazing places on earth (IMHO), and th route was similar in both cases. We happened to have a future cruise deposit credit for Princess following our cancelled cruise from May 2020 (can't think why it was cancelled ;)).

Our cruise to Alaska in 2019 was on the Celebrity Eclipse, so happy to try something a little different.

We are not big drinkers, even less so wine, so no, we didn't do the Winemakers dinner.

In our opinion, it's impossible not to enjoy Alaska. This was our third trip and although it's our third favorite, the region never ceases to amaze!

Day Four: Supplemental - Endecott Arm and Dawes Glacier

We entered the Arm at 5:00am and on to a (distant) view of a small-ish glacier. A late-sleeper could easily have missed it all! After our first trip to Glacier Bay in 2009 and the Hubbard Glacier in 2019, not to mention the Misty Fjords earlier in this trip, I have to say this was underwhelming.

I'll just leave that there.

Day Five: Skagway.

We had an early afternoon booking for the train, which is a must-do for anyone visiting for the first time. However, this was our second ride on the White Pass and Yukon Rail Road, the first being back in 2009. The accessible version was sold out, so we booked the regular trip, knowing I could leave the scooter there and walk the few steps into the carriage. However, there was plenty of space and I was easily accommodated. It was a little funny when a group of people decided they were going to take seats in the handicap coach and were quickly hurried out!

The communications have (obviously) been upgraded since 2009 and the commentary was excellent - much clearer than the first trip. Last time, we disembarked the train in Carcross and bussed back to the ship. This tour did a loop at the top and came back, so it didn't matter which side you chose to sit on, you were able to see everything. Some of the stories of endurance for very little reward were stunning, not to mention those who perished.

There was a shuttle running the 7/10ths of a mile from the ship along the pier due to two landslides. these were provided free of charge and were able to accommodate the scooter.

I will have more to say about handicapped cruising and the differences between the two lines at the end of the review. Save to say, one experience outweighs the other by a LONG way, including some minor differences.

(Gotcha now 🙂 You have to read to the end!).

I get it, for others who also aren't wine drinkers though as good as the wine was the food was amazing at the dinner, better than most Chef's Tables we've done on several lines.

We'd love to go back to Alaska too.
