Nikola Tesla lived in the New Yorker Hotel.  The hotel has a small exhibit about Tesla, and other aspects of its history, in an area below the main lobby.  (There are stairs and/or an escalator from the lobby.). I found it interesting when I was passing by.

Probably best you took a pass on the McDonald’s on 8th Ave at 35th (?) St.  May have improved recently, but it had been a hangout for drug use.  (When the City cleaned up Times Square a lot of the squalor pivoted south on 8th Ave.)

Stay dry and enjoy your trip!

As of Noon Time - The Governor of NYS and Mayor of NYC has declared a State of Emergency till about tomorrow morning when the weather should improve.

Certain suggestions and actions were stated at a Press Conference. If possible all should stay off the roads and remain home. Another part of the storm may repeat visiting the area around late afternoon to early evening. NYC area may expect the total of 8 inches may fall in the NYC area.

Heavy congestion remains affecting the the Five Boros Traffic on all roads. Some flooding is recessing but can return.

Today’s weather could lead to a QM2 embarkation paralleling the June 30 Halifax emergency delay experienced by those embarking pax. I just saw the luggage overboard post too.
Good luck to all trying to escape from NY!

John,

Do you think?

Same wave length as you after I read the other posting. Same thoughts!

Aloha. My parents had their honeymoon night at the New Yorker in the early 1950s lol. It was an upscale hotel at the time. Then it fell on hard times and was bought by the Revered Sun Hyung Moon (forgive possible misspelling). It then when downhill again and now is on its way up. There is a a very good Steakhouse I believe on the lower level or mezzanine but I have personally not dined there.  I am in NY now and it is a mess everywhere as has been posted. Our daughter is on vacation in Japan and heard it there.  She texted us even though it is the middle of the night.  Glad she loves her parents lol! Anyway Please keep us posted on your journey. All the best!

A lot of this will be repeated in my regular daily post but after quite an adventure I am onboard.  I did make a quick run to McDonalds (Hash Browns and coffee) with a moderate rain.  When I went out to meet Arecibo about 10:15 it was pouring down.  Traffic was very slow and as we approached the port several streets were closed.  The driver pretty much gave up on getting me actually to the port and left me off at Bowne (I think) street by the gate leading to the ship.  Fortunately at that time there was just a drizzle.

The terminal was an absolute zoo as it looked like very few of the disembarking passengers and after passing the ferry terminal the covered area up to the terminal entrance was wall to wall people waiting to get away from the port and quite a few people had walked towards the B61 bus or other rides.

I entered the terminal about 11:15 and the guy told me checkin would start at 11:30.  It didn't.  It did start about 11:45 but by then there were a lot of people waiting and there was quite a wait for security.  The checkin line for Grills Passengers was getting a bit long also and moved very slowly.  When I got to the desk the actual checkin was quite quick and I was given a priority boarding number 4 ticket.  I thought it would be a bit more of a wait in a nicer space than Britannia passengers get but it proceeded directly to the ship.  I crossed the gangway about 12:45.

Lunch started at 1:30 but after watching the safety video and stashing a few things I made my way down to Kings Court to get my card scanned.  They weren't scanning cards yet but I stopped at the Princess Grill about 1:20.  They weren't open yet but he escorted me to my table to wait in comfort.

Captain Hashmi came on the PA in the middle of lunch with an update.  Due to the weather our departure is delayed until about 11PM.  Cards will be scanned at our muster station 5 to 9 PM, and his safety message will be at 9PM.

My steward Bert delivered my big bag from Luggage Forward about 3:30.  I guess it's time to stop posting and start unpacking.

Roy,

Enjoy your cruise and Bon Voyage!

But it sounds like your sailing is a repeat performance of the 4th of July Cruise we were on, almost to the T! So sorry it had to be repeated in the same year. But you are on and get to see the Sailing Out at Night Time. Hope you get to photo some good shots even though it's suppose to rain till tomorrow morning.

Will follow your daily updates from a distance..

Glad you are safely on board. I haven’t gone out today, but saw that parts of Brooklyn (4th Ave, Prospect Expressway, and yes, Red Hook) were impassable, with fast moving water in some sections. You are safest on the ship!

Yesrs ago, we were upgraded to Princess Grill (why? and never repeated) on the QE2.  Wonderful to experience it - enjoy!

Hi Roy,

Thank you for your posts. I always appreciated your live reports on the Crystal boards and am happy to find you here as we will be embarking on our first Cunard cruise on October 9th! We're flying to Barcelona a week from today to explore the city for 2-nights pre-cruise. We are truly looking forward to our Queen Elizabeth sailing as I, at 47 years old, am a bit of an older soul in spirit. I love everything vintage, big band music, string ensembles, etc...  I think we're really going to love the Cunard experience. 🙂

But enough about me! I'm so happy you're on board the QM2 safe and sound. Looking forward to reading about your journeys on both ships!

Bon voyage!
