Cruising Hubbard Glacier Day

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I am going on the 7 day Glacier Discovery south bound cruise.

I have called Holland America's

" Dedicated excursion specialist" to find out if on the day that our Cruise Ship is cruising around Hubbard Glacier, will we  just have the one excursion offered that day, which is: "Excursions by Catamaran & enchanting disenchantment Bay"

One specialist told me there were no excursions offered at all that day, while I was looking straight at it on my itinerary seeing it being offered, so figured I needed to call another" Dedicated Excursion Specialist"  This person DID NOT know if this excursion was the only one offered that day or know if it fill up in advance. I have seen some Excursions on my cruise ( on different days) that were SOLD OUT or only 2 spaces left that seem to be booked months in advance.

I wanted to know how far in advance I should book this particular "Excursions by Catamaran Hubbard Glacier & enchanted Disenchantment Bay and if this is typically the one excursion offered that day.

Does anyone out there know the answer to this or perhaps has been on this particular cruise?

It is the only excursion. It does sell out. How far in advance?  Can’t really predict. But if you want it, don’t wait. It was fantastic when we did it first week of this month. Noordam was stopped 6 miles from the face. We got to 1/2 mile. Amazing beauty!

We were just there just one excursion.

If this is an excursion you want, just make the reservation.  You can cancel if you decide you made the wrong decision.  Of course, there is a cancelation date.  Why would you miss an excursion you want because an excursion specialist did not know?  Go to the excursions for your cruise and sign up.  JMO. Definitely book the Hubbard Glacier Catamaran as soon as you can. It has been the only excursion available there for years as you are in open waters. I did it in June and it was fabulous. Of course, we were very lucky to have a beautiful sunny day. The views from the ship are good too but with the catamaran you get a lot closer to the glacier which is one of very few in the world that is advancing and not receding.

We booked this excursion as soon as we booked the cruise but were waitlisted. About 2 days before the excursion we were told that we made it. It was great. We got close enough to hear and see a big calf event. Later talking to people on the ship they were around the island corner and could hear the ice cracking and the peoples yelling but couldn't see it. One of the best tours we did.

It was a link somewhere off the

" Why book our shore excursion" page on the website.

The term was not JUST specialist.

It was "Dedicated shore excursion specialist"

Thanks, found it.

From the website:

Is there a dedicated resource I can speak with about shore excursions?
;

The shore excursion reservation office is available to assist you Monday-Friday, 7 AM to 4 PST. Guests may call 1 (888) 425-9376 to speak directly with an agent.

Yep, that's the number I called.

Thanks anyway!

I have been to glacier bay multiple times and still overall prefer Hubbard Glacier as being the most spectacular.  You opinion may vary.

Thank you! I much prefer Hubbard. It's so big and so blue that even on a dreary day (cloudy/drizzle every day for 11 days on my recent cruise) it's still almost glows. I did this tour 5 years ago on a gloriously sunny day. Every moment was a "wow!"

@titodewy, can you book the tour online? That's the easiest way. I'm just off an Alaska cruise on Queen Elizabeth, and that tour was offered. When we got the excursion list on board, it said "limited," but someone I spoke to said she went to ask about it right away and was told it was sold out. So don't wait. There's only one boat, you don't want to miss it!

How difficult would the catamaran be to get on/off for someone w/mobility issues? No walking aides (cane, scooter...) but a bit "wobbly" at times. Thanks!

HI @Haljo1935

I did this excursion last September. I tend to be a bit wobbly due to a stuck hip flexor muscle and didn't have any problem. It was a nice ramp to the catamaran and, in true HAL style, there were several staff there to help if needed. It was a grey day when I did it but we got about a mile closer than the ship did and I'd do it again in a heartbeat!
