Carnival Cruise Line Not Planning to Order Smaller Ships

Recommended Posts

Well, this puts this subject to rest. Carnival makes more money on the larger ships. IMO, new cruisers want larger ships.

With that stated, things do change. At one time, Carnival said that it would not chase Royal and make a ship as large as Oasis. And we know how that turned out.

I think it's appropriate that JH was open and honest. Mass market cruising is a substantially different product than it was 20 years ago. One can either accept that or move on.

I can see some of the smaller ports going away and customers being funneled to the cruise line owned ports to feed the new mega-ships and extract 100% of your vacation spend.

I can mostly agree with that. What new cruisers want is more bells and whistles and that takes larger ships. The new cruisers of today are apparently incapable of entertaining themselves and enjoying the peace and tranquility of the oceans,

I can see more and more free casino cabins to fill the beasts.

There are already many complaints about limited itineraries. I can see new niche players repurposing smaller ships to offer alternatives.

For sure.

I suspect Carnival and RCL largely just become mega ships mostly serving their private ports in the Caribbean, and most other traffic gets shunted to their small subsidiaries.

I think you have to take what JH said with a little grain of salt and also read between the lines. No they will not build ships the size of the spirit class again but I do believe we will see "smaller ships" ordered at some point and when I mean smaller I reckon in the region of 140-160GT. Its already a common rumor that RCCL next class of ship is on the smaller side.

Will some US home ports also have a bridge clearance issue with larger ships?

depending on how tall the ships is, yes and a bridge will reduce the number of ports the ship can sail out of

I think we have 8-10 years before we see start seeing reductions in service from Carnival Cruise Line due to height (air draft) limitations. Getting Luminosa out of Brisbane and one of the seasonal Spirit class vessels out of Mobile or Galveston by 2028-29 will help Baltimore, Tampa, and Jacksonville persist. Brisbane and Mobile/Galveston can use Conquest-class or larger vessels to run the routes currently served by their current ships.

Elation and Paradise also have firm dates for dry docks in 2026. They aren't going anywhere yet, and their younger sisters in the Spirit class should stick around after the Fantasy class departs.

I am good up to Vista class. But I want Carnival to keep the Spirit class another 10 years so we can grow long in the tooth together! I will pass and say no thanks to the new and future giants of the sea.

I know there's no bridges, but is there anything keeping the Dream or Vista class ship from being put in Mobile?

Other than the parking situation, which would definitely need some help.

No. Well except for limited demand.

From what I understand(I could be wrong), there isn't enough room for the larger ships to turn once in the port area.

This was my understanding, also.  I thought I read somewhere that Mobile was dredging an area so that larger ships could dock.  Also, didn't Carnival dock a larger ship there for a while during the shutdown?  I'm sure someone will chime in.

Yes, Mobile was working on widening the turning basin so that ships would not have to be towed in/out of the Mobile River; iz is scheduled for completion in 2025. The cruise port was also scheduled to have its gangway replaced.

Conquest and Triumph have docked at Mobile, but that was pre-shutdown. Many of the freight vessels that dock at Mobile have deeper drafts than Carnival's ships, which is driving the widening and dredging.

And of course the demand was there too. I thought sailing from Mobile was fine, except for the parking situation. It's crowded and weird to force everyone through one spot whether you have bags to drop off or you just want to park and have nothing to drop off.

I looked the Breeze compared to the Spirit is about 40ft difference in length so makes sense if turnaround space is why. The Conquest is 10ft shorter than Spirit.

Thanks for the info.

So who is (making smaller ships?  Certainly not Royal, in fact, the largest monstrosity of the seas is sailing at 132%.  Must be putting them in all that free space.

There are still plenty of ships for the smaller ships.  The mega’s are the destination, not the ports.  There a re plenty of ports for them to sail from and plent for the smaller ships.  It is not a one size fits all.

I think cruise ships could last 100 years or more. That should be sufficient.
