Bed bugs on ships?

I haven't encountered them personally, but I sure as heck do a thorough check in any sleeping quarters I am about to use before unpacking my luggage, as a standard operating procedure!

I think everyone should check...only takes a few minutes of time and could spare you much aggravation and expense if you find evidence of bed bugs before it's too late.

In my experience the bedding is changed at the end/start of each cruise and several times in between depending on the length of the cruise.:D

Absolutely -- though these little buggers also live/hide along mattress seams, in upholstery (e.g. the stateroom sofa), etc. So only checking that the bedding is clean and white might give a false sense of security...

Bed bugs can be anywhere, not just in the beds or other soft furniture like couches and chairs....they are pesky things that can even be carries on the sole of shoes, go through electrical outlets in the walls, and live in the cracks of dressers...YUCK....

You best bed is to send one person in the room when you first get on board and leave all luggage outside of room at first and go and check your bed and other furniture. If you notice any form of the bed bug (they grow in stages like a flea or lice) then contact a RC employee right away!

I read on here on a different thread that a couple found them in their room and they were given a different room to stay in (good thing one was available) and then the cruise line treated the room (they have to be killed with very very high heat)

But don't stress over getting them on a ship, just check and move on...you can get them anywhere!

There are definitely bedbugs! Just came back from a cruise on Oasis of the Sea (Royal Caribbean). My son and daughter who were sharing a room were definitely bitten multiple times by bedbugs. The bites were small "pimple-like" at first, so we dismissed it, but eventually more and more bites appeared and they got large and itchy. My son ended up with at least 30 bites, where my daughter around 15. We gave feedback to Royal Caribbean, but have yet to hear back from them.

I recently read what I think is good advice. When you check into a hotel or go to your cruise cabin the first time, set all your things and your luggage in the bathroom while you check for bedbugs. Bedbugs aren't likely to be in the bathroom.
