  1. Cruise ships have been used as hotel ships in some cities where the Super Bowl has been played when the host city lacks the number of hotel rooms required. For example: the Zuiderdam when the game was played in Jacksonville.
  2. Thank you for your response. Malted milk balls, Chuckles, and granola bars sound quite acceptable. Since the new provisions are so dry, is the amount amount of 500 ml of water/day really adequate? (But, such a diet might encourage the kidneys to reduce their daily output?)
  3. I understand what you are saying in your post. I have been repeatedly assured that all crew and guests can and would be accommodated in the lifeboats/rafts, if need be. But, the video is disturbing if one would need to be in such a situation for a week. For most cruises, with the modern lifeboats that are aboard, cruising in most regions would not require such a long response rescue time. But, in the middle of the Pacific or Indian Ocean where shipping traffic is few and far between?
  4. There was a period in my life of 7 years when I was unable to cruise because of my responsibilities as caregivers for my parents. The one year that I did manage to sail on a 7 day Alaskan cruise, the night before I was to fly home after a couple of days in Vancouver after the cruise, I returned to my hotel room to find my phone's message light blinking. I needed to call my Mother's nursing facility ASAP. The message was the Head Nurse did not think she had much time left. What a night! What a stressful flight home! I drove straight to the nursing home from the airport late at night. I reassured her that I was still there. She thought, we believe, that I had forsaken her and was giving up. She rallyed and stayed with us another 8 months. There are very good reasons why there has to be gaps in one's cruising resume. My signature would include more cruises than are listed if I had not experienced that time lost at sea.
  5. There is a mask requirement on the Zuiderdam as she sails towards San Diego for the start of the Tales of the South Pacific Cruise. WCB thinks it will remain in effect until at least Hawaii.
  6. The mixed messaging that I am reading today after the CCL report on this Board as well as on others makes me more determined than ever that I "will stay the course" with my investments in CCL. None of us are in the Executive Suite in Miami as far as I know. We know not what the thinking is other than what they report. "Buy quality and hold": isn't this what Mr. Buffet as done? I am a Buffet believer. I bought quality. I held when we went through this last very negative cycle for cruise stocks. I bought more when the time was right to do so. I surely don't want to see my holdings drop to worthless. But, if they do, I have other pots that have done and are doing well.
  7. Looks delicious as well as the other photos of the food you posted. Personally, I prefer lobster tails without all of the other "stuff" that the Chef added to them. Just good drawn butter and lemon: that's what I prefer. I will echo another poster's view of both of you: as the Indonesian stewards say on HAL "Lovely couple!"
  8. In the video that Capt BJ posted, the young woman showing us around the lifeboat showed a small package of some kind of nutrition that she said would last one person one week. I could not see what the package said nor did I clearly understand what that package contained. What kind of "food" is this and how can such a small package contain enough nutrition to last one for 7 days? What size of serving(s)/day would accomplish its goal?
  9. I agree. Don't remember for certain, but, I think that Princess uses the same system. The passengers on the Prinsendam did not have that choice. The fire spread sufficiently fast that it was unsafe for one to return to their staterooms to get more appropriate clothes. It's probably better for one to consider that one will be unable to return to their stateroom during an emergency. The father and daughter on the Costa Concordia who lost their lives did arrive at their Muster Station only to leave and, presumably, tried to return to their cabin.
  10. 🤣🤣🤣 Not an unwise position, I think. If I sold both of my pots of CCL today, I would take a loss that would carry over for several years on my 1040s. I remain "above water" on RCL simply because I did buy it just above its lows during the last major drop in cruise industry prices. I am going to keep an open mind as to what to do. It does seem to me that corporate CCL has to do more than what has been done to return to profitability.
  11. I have considered that as well. In the literature that I have read about the Prinsendam disaster, those concerns have not been mentioned other than the male passengers had an advantage of getting to the edge of a boat and relieving themselves. It was reported that when many of the ladies were rescued, they immediately headed for the rescue vessel's loo. Modern ships are built to be their own lifeboat. The most recently built ships have separate engine rooms (as I understand it) and are purposely designed to reach the nearest port on their own power.
  12. The report from CCL is very disappointing and concerning as to what will happen next, As one who owns RCL and CCL, and still believe in them, I am not selling. Yet. Whatever I would sell, maybe an exception would be my RCL shares, would be a loss. There has been discussion that some of the brands that CCL, and to a lesser extent RCL, own may get sold, spun-off, or disposed of in some way. I am sorry to say, but, I think the likelihood of that happening has increased today.
  13. If the space were enclosed, yes. That would help. But, the Prinsendam's lifeboats, with the exception of two tenders (one of which couldn't be launched) were open to the elements in the Gulf of Alaska, in October, during stormy weather and high seas.
  14. I believe you are correct. Those "find me" devices were not available at the time of the Prinsendam disaster.
  15. This is a very important point that no one else has mentioned. When the Prinsendam caught fire and had to be abandoned, many of the passengers were dressed only in flimsy nightclothes and slippers. Having to be in the life boats as long as they were, it was a miracle that some did not succumb to hypothermia. In fact the rescue of all of the passengers and crew with no deaths was a miracle! Yes, I do watch that program when I can. I agree that such a simple, failed repair can cause the problems that sometimes happen. I have also become aware that the problems of junior crew (a First Officer in the cockpit) may be hesitant to "say something" to an experienced Captain if he/she thinks the Captain is wrong. That has also been a problem on the Bridge of a ship. I do believe that this issue has been corrected, both by the airlines and the cruise/freight companies, in the training that their Deck and flight crews have experienced.
  16. Very interesting! One needs to be fairly agile to do all of the moving around that the young woman did. Different lifeboats on other ships would have similar equipment, I am sure. But, where and how they are stored would probably differ, I expect.
  17. I took some Yellow Fever pills and not a vaccine. I was told by a neighbor in a cabin next to mine that I was hallucinating during the night while I was asleep. Had absolutely no memory of that! When I returned home, I asked my PCP if that was possible and he said, Yes. It is a possible side effect for some people.
  18. Certainly agree, but, for all three of the major cruise lines, those contracts pose as "anchors" for them to get "out to sea" again.
  19. I will get into my records for my cruise and see if I can help you. Even with the mini-facial and shave, the price was reasonable in my opinion.
  20. IMO, somehow--and I have no idea how this may be possible, it has to stop--the long range planning of the cruise lines on building more and more ships are coming back to bite them. Cruise ships built for markets that never developed and are not likely to develop in the near future (Asia/China): lots of "forward thinking" at the time the decisions were made to build. Now.....?
  21. All so necessary! I will be following along and am interested in your perspectives of your cruise. Safe and uneventful travel wishes for you in order to join the ship!
  22. Quality dining ought to be a non-complicated event in one's day. All of the packages and whatever restrictions there may be are turn offs for me. I will stick to dining in the YC Restaurant where it is "simple" and "excellent".
  23. What is your itinerary? What accommodations are yours? YC? Thanks for posting and I will be following along.
  24. Don't have massaging seats, but do have heated and cooled seats with a heated steering wheel which makes Winter driving in Ohio and Summer driving wherever more pleasant. Fuel economy has been very good. (A very hesitant buyer of a car with a turbo 4 cylinder engine; other than my first car--a Corvair--it's been a six--either straight or a V-6. The power, the pick-up, no turbo lag. Very pleased.) I don't drive a great deal anymore: don't have the need. Made a visit to a gas station this afternoon; according to my record book, the last visit was late June of this year.
